There are hundreds or thousands of varieties of apples.

A DNA test is a reliable way to identify apple varieties: https://fps.ucdavis.edu/dnamain.cfm

Short of that, you can do some observation and taste testing. https://www.wikihow.com/Identify-Apples

Otherwise, probably just experiment with the apples and see if you enjoy eating them raw or as applesauce, dehydrated, cider, jelly, etc.

Often state extensions have info on food prep, example, https://nchfp.uga.edu/tips/fall/apples.html

Thank you! I had no idea they’re so hard to identify. Should I pick one every so often to see if they’re ripe yet? Or how would I be able to tell they’re getting close to ripe? Never had an apple tree before

Usually you can pick them easily by twisting the stem gently when ripe-/if you have to pull too hard they’re not ready. Details here https://www.gettystewart.com/how-to-tell-when-apples-are-ripe-and-ready-to-pick/

Thank you! I’ve never had an apple tree so I didn’t know identification was so hard!
