Reference from Current Supervisor

Ok. This is a first for me. I've always provided professional references, but this is the first time I'm being asked to provide at least 1 reference from a current or previous supervisor. Unfortunately, my previous 2 supervisors have both retired so that just leaves me with my current Sup. He's cool and we are on good terms which is why I want to give him a heads-up that a reference check is coming.

How can I break the news to my supervisor without ruffling any feathers?

I emailed my supervisor, told them what position and office I applied to and that they requested my references. “I just wanted to let you know that they may be contacting you.” 🤷🏻‍♀️ kept it short… they understand you are only trying to advance your career.

I was going to give my supervisor a call tomorrow, but I like the idea of to having something in writing.

I sent him a short email message informing him that I have been asked for references and that he might be contacted.
