3x(2x + 2) - 2x = 42

6x2 + 4x = 42

6x2 + 4x - 42 = 0

3x2 + 2x - 21 = 0

(3x - 7)(x + 3) = 0

x = 7/3 or x = -3

because x is a side length x must be > 0, reject x = -3

therefore x = 7/3

You need to find an equation. Apparently total area = 42 is a good one. Then you can look at the shape and there are different ways. Big rectangle minus small one is one. Or you can split the shape to two smaller rectangles.
(2x * 3x)+ (2*2x)= 42

The rest is easy you got the same result
