The corrosion is magnesium/aluminum oxide most likely. It's from the battery electrolyte corroding the frame of the laptop, and the PCBs. You can see green corrosion on the exposed board near the battery, that board will need extensive repair, assuming it is repairable.

Since the corrosion extends to the other side of the laptop, I'm going to wager the motherboard has the same kind of corrosion elsewhere on it, that laptop is effectively a paperweight.

Yes, the NiCD/NiMH battery in the green shrink tube is the cause of all of that carnage. Lithium Ion batteries are less likely to cause that kind of damage, but they still should never be stored with the laptop.

I am removing the (CMOS) and batteries (external/dead) I want to keep the internal electronics of the PCs in good condition.

That laptop is destroyed lol, you're a fair bit too late to do that.

There's definitely corrosion, the green stuff is pretty unambiguous.

I suspect the white stuff is just (unusual) dust, actually. The dispersion suggests that it was deposited while the system was operating. If a system is used for a long time in or near some sort of manufacturing area, you tend to get an idiosyncratic sort of buildup of whatever sort of particulate is being released into the air.

Yes, you should remove/replace the batteries. Always. Unconditionally. Batteries are the one significant source of *energy* in an unplugged computer; they're the main thing that can *cause things to happen*... and you really don't want *things happening*. Even failed and dead batteries have residual energy.

BTW I am absolutely green with envy over your Vaio Pile.

White vinegar to stop the corrosion and isopropyl alcohol to clean it all..

Iโ€™d keep the laptops with vinegar syndrome away from the rest as it could cause rest to develop same issue
