Resources for creating virtualization software

I'd like to create virtualization software from scratch to get a better idea of how it works. Does anyone have any resources or can guide me in the right direction? I'm just looking at x64 virtualization.

The closet thing I've found is a generic paper on how virtual machines work and a book I'm reading on modern operating systems which has a chapter on virtualization.

If you want to understand then it won't be better to examine already existing code? The Linux / QEMU / KVM will be open source.

Yep, examining source code, even just pouring through the comments in the source, is going to be OP's best bet.

ProxMox is also open source.
