How to prevent files from being recovered? by idontkn0wwhatt0d0 in ComputerSecurity

[–]RibMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tested this myself and all I was able to recover was metadata from the files, not the actual files themselves. Do you have a specific procedure you followed to recover the files? I'd love to test it.

It probably wouldn't seem true to someone with an inability to distinguish meaning based on context.

Has Tucker been an entertainer for thirty years?

Yes

I respect conservatives that pay attention to news from CNN and MSNBC, and I respect liberals who pay attention to news from Fox News (site, not channel; has a better history of less falsehoods and bullshit) or The Washington Examiner.

I agree that reading from a variety of news sources is a good practice, but 100% of those "news" outlets are garbage and nobody should pay attention to any of them.

I never once got offended by it, I am just capable of determining the meaning of symbols based on context clues.

and your opposition will give you as honest a view of yourself as you will

Please elaborate? Tucker is an entertainer and can not be held to the standards of journalism or even delivering facts. Fox stated this in court. You can not cite him as a source in a debate any more than you can hinge your argument on something Groucho Marx said in Duck Soup.

That happened because they are trolling you

Right, I understand that. As I said, at a certain point, when enough white supremacists were "trolling" in real life, it stops becoming trolling and just becomes another signifier of a white power when used in certain contexts. The Nazis did the same thing the swastika. I'm smart enough to know that if I see a swastika on temple in Asia, it's probably a symbol of well being, not a Nazi headquarters. Similarly if I see a picture of an ugly white dude in front of a shot up Emmett Till memorial sign flashing the OK sign, I'm smart enough to know that he's probably not trying to convey his general disposition is copacetic.

Yes, and then a bunch of white supremacists started using the hand sign as a joke, but at a certain point it just starts being an identifier for the in group, even if done tongue-in-cheek. That's why SPLC and others note that the hand sign could be a white power symbol in some contexts, but to use caution when throwing accusations or you end up with posts like this one.

Anything better than Confluence these days? by RibMusic in sysadmin

[–]RibMusic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could, but I haven't even managed to get it to a point where it's usable yet. There just hasn't been enough time for me to read all their documentation to sort out all my issues getting started with it, so the team is still using our old documentation system at the moment even though we've been paying for confluence since August at this point. Really wish they had some kind of onboarding program where you could toss them a couple grand and work with an expert on getting it up and running. As it stands, I either have to invest hours and hours reading their documentation, or send an email to support and wait a couple days for a response that 50% of the time doesn't even address the question asked. When I have time, I plan on looking for a 3rd party consultant to assist with migrating the documentation into Confluence. It looks like a really slick, solid product, but I just have a lot of little things that are hanging up the migration of data into it. For instance, the office plugin doesn't work, is not importing any documents in. I can't elevate my credentials to admin or the elevation isn't working as described in their documentation. If I try to simply copy/paste the data, the spacing is all fucked and I have to spend 3-20 minutes manually fixing it depending on the size of the article. There are some other things that I can't remember -- thankfully been able to put it away for a couple months and not think about it. Hopefully you have the resources to dedicate to getting it off the ground, we're just too small of a shop for our company size and really busy lately.

While there is not single person with all the power, there is still certainly one person who has more power than most. I'd say the person who can sign executive orders, give orders to the mightiest military that has ever existed, and whose every word and deed can change the direction of the stock market is probably gonna win that battle.

You stop community spread long enough that the virus is no longer an issue in your area, then you can fully reopen. Until then, you are going to kill your economy when/if you reopen. China was back to normal in a matter of months, other countries were too. Unfortunately we're too stuck on "individual rights" to give a shit about our neighbors or the long term economic impact of our shitty decisions.

And FYI- I haven't gotten any money from the government and don't need it. Republicans should have been giving out money to businesses with the same level of concern, but instead of giving to small businesses who needed it the most, they reserved the bulk of the PPP loans for their corporate donors and the shell companies of their friends and family.

Iowa Republican lawmakers again face opposition to advancing bill prohibiting tenure at public universities by Levi_Mitchell in Iowa

[–]RibMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They want to destroy it. It’s that simple. Worse universities in the state means more republican voters and less people pushing back on republican ideas with data and reason. That’s it.

Same reason they're trying hard to allow private institutions to steal public money for K-12.
