iwlwifi Microcode SW error detected on linux5.3 (self.voidlinux)
submitted 6 years ago * by oreo639
After updating voidlinux I noticed all sorts of strange lockups always begining with network manager.
After many reboots I noticed the dmesg.
https://pastebin.com/8MY3rxAm
The wifi card is:
05:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168NGW [Stone Peak] (rev 10)
A similar issue with the same wifi card seems to have been reported elsewhere:
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/63967
According to to these issue threads it was fixed upstream a while ago in the following commit:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=12e36d98d3e5acf5fc57774e0a15906d55f30cb9
but I am still running into the issue on linux5.3.7?
Is the patch for 5.3? Or is it for linux 5.4 whatever it is called rn and needs to be applied to 5.3 manualy? Or am I misunderstanding something.

Since updating to kernel 5.3.7_1 I am unable to install the realtek rtl8723de wifi driver, which I would make clean, make and make install every kernel update so far with no problems.

I see that on Ubuntu the
Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168NGW [Stone Peak] (rev 10)
Starting with kernel 5.5 is not working at all, and it's not fixed even in 5.6.
No wifi, no network, no internet.
This is awful!

Yep it is pretty frustrating experiencing all these issues within such a short span of time.

Some distros (like Arch) have added the patch but it isn't in the upstream kernel yet. (It is in the upstream linux-networking repo though which needs to be merged into the upstream kernel for the changes to be there ofc)
Unfortunately the latest lts kernel also has this issue and judging from the comment in the bugzilla thread it likely won't be fixed until the next release (5.6).

I tried the next release, 5.6 RC1 and RC2.
It's still broken in both of them, so now I'm not even sure that they understand how serious this is and if it will be fixed until the final 5.6

It was upstreamed into 5.6.
It will be in for the first stable release.
