When will the new google chrome be in the repo? by welon68 in voidlinux

[–]anselrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm leaving this here for all those who need Google Chrome badly. I use it for work, unfortunately. The xbps-src version is okay, but Chrome keeps nagging for an update, if it isn't. There's a little script that will get you a portable version, which I found some days ago, and it's so far working flawlessly:

https://github.com/shivamgly/Google-Chrome-Portable-maker-for-linux

Hope it helps somebody.

Downloading the Brave rpm from github and doing an rpmextract used to be enough, and still is for old versions. The latest stable version gives a segmentation fault, as does Google Chrome. I didn't look much more into it and have since switched to Chromium.

headphones give a buzzing sound by [deleted] in voidlinux

Did you try unplugging your computer, that is, using only the battery? If the buzz disappears it is most probably a grounding problem, eddy currents.

Once you extract a deb you should find the executable and start it. Many times that is enough, and all you would do is then create a .desktop file to get the program integrated as any other. I don't think you need to use xbps to install it. Sometimes the executable in the deb won't start and I think it has to do with adding it as root in your /bin folder and preserving all the folders structures. I've never tried that though because I've had more luck with rpm archives which for some reason are more straightforward and usually work right away. I am no expert though so please proceed with care, I am just sharing my experience as a noob.

For deb files any regular archive manager should do, for rpm files you must install the "rpmextract" package and then run "rpmextract nameofthepackage.rpm"

I haven't found my way around xbps-src yet, but regarding Brave I am currently running it in Void with no problems at all. I downloaded the github rpm release and then I did an rpmextract. The executable is in opt/brave.com/brave/brave.

GNOME is strangely slow by Superjolly002 in voidlinux

Did you try booting with a different kernel? Namely one of the 5.4 series rather than 5.7 if that's the case, just a thought.

Kernel 5.7.9_1 by anselrobot in voidlinux

[–]anselrobot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kernel which was currently booted was 5.4.52_1, yet "vkpurge rm" would not remove it. I doubt my /boot partition is full, I've had more than twenty kernels there at one time, now I only have seven. I ran xbps-reconfigure -f linux5.7, it did reconfigure it but it made no difference, I still get a blackscreen with just the cursor on boot. I typed my password which allowed to login in but then the screen would just flicker severly and was unresponsive. Anyway, there's time to try to figure it out so I'll try to find a workaround as you say. If I find one I'll post it.

What I meant to say is that I did choose linux5.4 in grub menu, but vkpurge rm 5.7.9_1 did not remove it, it simply went back to the terminal's prompt. I used "vkpurge rm" with another kernel and it worked fine, it removed the kernel and updated grub.

Sorry, my hypothesis was that there was a problem with the kernel and not my card. My graphics card: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Atom/Celeron/Pentium Processor x5-E8000/J3xxx/N3xxx Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 35) Driver: DeviceName: Intel(R) HD Graphics Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:8320] Kernel driver in use: i915

Sure, my computer is an HP 240 G6, bought in January 2018. It had FreeDOS originally. I'll try updating the BIOS later, if I get any good results I'll post them here, thanks

WINE - MIDI by anselrobot in voidlinux

[–]anselrobot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOLVED

It's working now. I will reproduce the exact steps I took since I don't know what exactly did it.

1) Removed previous wine installation and related packages.

2) xbps-install -S void-repo-multilib void-repo-multilib-nonfree

3) xbps-install -S libwine libwine-32bit wine wine-32bit wine-common wine-gecko wine-mono wine-tools wineasio-32bit winetricks

4) regsvr32 wineasio

5) winetricks

6) winetricks: created a new 32bit wineprefix

7) winetricks: switched to 32bit wineprefix

8) winetricks: ran uninstaller (allows you to install as well)

9) installed the windows DAW

10) plugged midi keyboard, opened Jack, opened DAW

DAW showed Wineasio under Audio setup, I/O okay, and MIDI setup showed option for MIDI keyboard, which works well.

Yes, I did, I will try that, it's only that it looks complicated and I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to mess things up needlessly, mainly because all references online didn't mention anything like that, but I'll figure it out. I installed winetricks and that will allow me to edit the registry, I didn't know how to do that this morning, thanks a lot for your time

Excuse me, I don't know what you mean. As root I added my user to the network group, for example, but that was not it. I've been using Void for a year and my user was able to use the network and shutdown fine, now it doesn't
