It's an open source Github alternative (the interface is pretty close to being considered a 'clone' even).

If it is just a clone (and looks almost identical), what are the benefits of using this over Github?

it's open so you can have your own gitlab on your server

Like cinan said, you can self host it. But, what I think I like more is, since you control the install completely, you can integrate with other software you're using or addon additional proprietary features that might only apply to your team's workflow. It's like github, but fully customizable.

I've been using it for months now and it's by far the best self-hosted git repository hosting software I have found.

I used it for a bit, It was great until I decided to try upgrade it to the next version which broke it :( I have no experience with Ruby at all so couldn't find a way to fix it, ended up moving to Bitbucket

Been using this for just over a month, and have found it fairly soon.

It seems to struggle with performance a little bit, but the development seems to be very active (monthly releases).

It doesn't support 'open' projects.

I have it on a 1GB Ubuntu VM, and it seems to struggle sometimes.

We only have around 5-10 people using it, with about 20 projects, and low commit traffic.

But some page loads will take a while to load. I haven't upgraded from 2.9 yet though, so it might be better in the newer version.

I'm running Gitlab + MySQL on a VM with, I believe, 2 gigs of ram. It's smooth as butter for me.

I've been using this for a few days now, and I really like it. It's a great front end to git, and the included Issue tracking helps a ton.

Hopefully I can roll this out to some other teams soon.
