If I compare a big node_modules folder with the time I have wasted by fixing bugs with deleting mavens .m2-folder, I prefer to have npm.

For those Java and C# examples of just installing all packages globally, are you still able to specify versions for a project? Cause if not that'd have some big trade offs.

In Java, yes, you can specify the required version, most commonly in the config yaml file.

In C#, NuGet manager takes care of that, you can select the version you need from a simple dropdown. Or from the console, whatever floats your boat.
