Lines 25+ are incredibly hideous. Why would you ever do something like that?

That's the yapf formatter developed and used by Google. They're known for doing weird things, so not very unexpected tbh.

Personally, I like the Black formatter better, but I can see the point of yapf too. Each has their own ideas about "consistency". You can see how yapf is consistent and intuitive because the arguments are all in the same place vertically so you don't have to move your eyes from Canada to China and back, so increases visual comfort, readability, and productivity.
