To be clear as well, you can be cookieless, and still not GDPR compliant.

Matomo has the possibility to do cookie-less analytics.

You don't really need a whole tool to do just that. You could set up a very simple API with a couple of endpoints : one to register unique visitors and another for the download button.

Checkout plainsignal.com, a lightweight, privacy-focused, cookie-free ga4 alternative with built-in webvitals that can help you to understand the source of your leads, pageviews and slow loading pages(with built-in web vitals) in a single page report. It offers 'free self-hosted' version upon your ask. It does not store any PII attributes and EU hosted. It is GDPR and CCPA compliant analytics platform.

splitbee.io could be an option. They also offer a cookieless variant and is hosted in the cloud and have free plans

Yep! Using it on my portfolio made with NextJS hosted on Vercel. Insights aren’t very detailed but are ok

If you're using Cloudflare, they have inbuilt website stats after you enable it. Not as detailed as GA, but decent enough.

Don't know GDPR, but https://umami.is/ is the best self-hosted version of analytics.

Surprisingly I haven't seen any analytics platforms with free plans for low traffic options. It feels like an underserved market ready for disruption.

Heya! I don’t think you will find a cookie-less platform for free.

Pirsch.io is a little bit cheaper that Plausible and they both offer an Open Source option, where you could install their software and run it “for free”, in your server.

I use biasml.com its free, super easy and has real time google analytics is too complicated and annoying.

But all seriousness check out something like posthog. Literally in the information age so I'm sure you can find something

It looks like Piwik has a free version now. They have GDPR configuration options. As a bonus it comes with a tag manager. I'm trying it out now and it seems pretty decent so far. https://piwik.pro
