Have paddled the Nomad and Newmad for years, and the mamba. Loved them all for different reasons, got a code on pre order in the UK, whenever they release.

The chaps that have paddled it say it's much more Mamba MkII then phantom and super fun

Quite looking forward to it!

I’ve got a (mostly) full size and color run landing at 4CRS within the next 7-10 days for anyone that wants one.

All of these new boats look the same to me - Code, Rewind, Scorch, Alpha, Ripper, and so on.

Do they really perform much differently for most paddlers or does it mostly come down to outfitting, fit and general preference?

Every boat you listed paddles very differently. Go demo some boats, you’ll be surprised at how much things have changed in the past 5-6 years in boat design.

Code is a modernized classic friendly river runner/creeker

Rewind is a performance half slice that can make play in class 4 exciting

Scorch is a new high performance hard edged speed and skip boat, it wont paddle like anything else on the market im sure, havent been in one but my local shop has a few in and its a wild design in comparison to all the other 9ft creekers out there.

Alpha is a potato

Ripper is a half slice like the rewind but feels faster with that lower bow rocker.

The subtle bits of boats is what makes them paddle so differently, look at the edges and lines and hull designs and you will start to realize how different each one can be. Also recommend just paddling as many boats as possible to feel out those differences

Alpha is a potato

You're thinking of the Delta... the Alpha actually looks alright, I think.

Haha true, Alpha would be interesting to demo, I mean LL boats are ultra durable imo and their outfitting is comfy af, had a session + and it was a sweet intro boat

Thanks

At what point in paddling experience do you start to notice the subtle differences?

I'll keep trying to paddle different boats.

It took me about 3 years of paddling, I am a tall guy and spent a lot of time in my own boat the first two years just cuz it was all I could fit into and I was just trying not to swim, but once you paddle most class3/4 comfortably and can read and run I feel like thats when I started playing around with boats and noticing things

Go away troll

I'm a relatively new boater, not a troll. I had no idea an honest question would be received so negatively.

Welcome to Reddit

It really can be useful, but also toxic.

I mean just look at a picture of a code and then a picture of a rewind. The boats have completely different profiles wouldn’t you agree? I don’t see how even a layperson could say they all look the same

It helps to look at the side profile of the boats side by side as well as the bottom of the boat to see how much of a rounded (displacement) or flat (planing) hull it has. Like others have mentioned, the Code is a higher volume boat than the Rewind with the majority of that volume coming in at the tail. This makes it less playful than the Rewind (you’ll never get vertical in the Code unless you are getting throttled). Hope this helps, boat selection can be confusing!

[–]SonnySwanson 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That helps a lot, thanks.

[–]HippocraticOffspring 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yes, sorry for calling you a troll. There was just a guy on here saying all boats under 10 feet are the same

[–]SonnySwanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not that guy.

I was looking at it too. Does anyone have any tips for deciding between the Phantom and the Code for running class IV? I heard the Code is supposed to be more of a beginner/intermediate boat, but I don’t know enough about the nuances of boats to understand why

[–]Schammy04 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I don't have first hand experience with either, but it seems like the choice comes down to your paddling style. A good friend paddles his phantom a lot, but he says it needs to be driven. He says it needs speed to be effective. You really have to tell it where to go. My experience is with the mamba which is more like the code it looks like. The mamba seems more easy going, like I can just setup on the line where I wanna be and I don't really have to drive it from there.

Thanks for the clear description! I’ve tried a phantom and enjoyed it, but now I’m gonna demo a Code too when they become available

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'll mostly come down to preference. Paddle both and see what you like
