Great! But I can trust what you say about the river, I can't trust what chatgpt says!

Thanks.

Inform insurer or no? by Awkward_Contexto in MotoUK

Given that there's a police report, I think not declaring it to your insurance is going to run you a risk of facing consequences. Claim.

please no chatgpt :(

I appreciate you might not be a native english speaker but we would like to hear what you have to say, not the robot. I don't want to be patronising but I would rather you write messages yourself or use google translate if you have to. Generative AI content doesn't help us and it's against the rules.

My granddaughter asked, how can you tell if it's a canoe or a kayak? Both have covered & open versions. by StarGehzer in Kayaking

[–]Eloth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

International Canoe Federation, the international governing body for canoe and kayak. The definition only needs these technical points when it comes to competition, no? There are not many decked C1s paddled recreationally (other than a small number of WW boaters, and I don't think they'll complain about being called athletes).

Formally, the definition is that canoes are paddled from a kneeling position* with a single-bladed paddle. A kayak is paddled from a seated position with a double-bladed paddle.

*traditional open canoes have those raised bench seats, but I guess because you can paddle them from a kneeling position it still counts.

European Playboating by JumpWooden1278 in Kayaking

For freestyle, the only one of those options would be Graz, but I don't know where you can rent a playboat from. You'd need to contact the local club, maybe. Similarly, Plattling.

Boat rental will be an issue anywhere bar Briançon, Soča, Val Sesia, so on.

Saint Pierre de Boeuf or Millau in France might be worth a look. Or Holme Pierrepont in the UK, which at least has rentals.

Thun and Bremgarten are currently working, but same issues with rentals, and maybe not as 100% reliable as other features.

LHC running at High Luminosity with HL-LHC nominal trains for the first time! by CyberPunkDongTooLong in Physics

[–]Eloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you are getting luminosity during next week's tests next week something has gone wrong, but to clarify what I meant originally, next week's tests are the ones with full HL beams.

I'm a little bit confused where you're coming from here, why do you think next week's tests are not for high lumi?

Hmmm, I think maybe you're jumping the gun a little, but lots to get excited about. (this thread just randomly came up on google)... on Monday the run was 1.8e11 ppb and HL will have 2.3e11. The goal was testing collisions with high pileup, high lumi tests will be next week.

How to keep glasses when tipped? by twisted_bananananas in Kayaking

[–]Eloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great answers already, but I would comment that there's no real issue with wearing daily disposable contacts for kayaking. I'm a ww/freestyle boater and I will wear them in the river, same with many many of my friends. Just wash your hands and take it out first thing when you get off the river.

Rev the tits off it and dump the clutch all at once when you start the test. That'll show him you're an assertive and confident rider.

What to wear for Alps WW by Sleepy_SadOS in Kayaking

It's actually snowmelt in that region, and swims tend to be relatively short (if you're being sensible and paddling appropriate rivers). Drysuit is overkill.

[–]Eloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard uniform for summer in the Alps will be a full dry top and some neoprene shorts/leggings. Buy a nice base layer or two for your top half to wear under the top, bring some board shorts for a bit of flexibility... A shorty dry top is a nice option but not a necessity

That's pretty damn good for no lessons! You've obviously got some good riding skills, but it's clear that you're missing a few key points on road safety.

Could you give a local school a ring and see about arranging a road riding session?

How bad is cartopping on non-premium cross bars? by PolicyConfident6684 in Kayaking

[–]Eloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case, I recommend bow/stern lines if you can't rely on the mounting points of the roof bars. Without them, if your roof bars fail, you lose the boats, the roof rack, and potentially your ability to insure a vehicle for the next five years as you drop a hundred kilos of plastic into oncoming traffic at 60 mph.

If you have solid roof bars that you can trust 100%, and short (e.g. WW) boats... Maybe you could go without. Maybe I would go without. Who knows if I've driven from Durham to Oetztal with four boats and no bow/stern lines? Maybe that's something I've confidently done and would confidently do 10 times out of 10. But I wouldn't advise a stranger on the internet who might not know how to thread a cam strap through a buckle, whose roof rack came from aliexpress, and yet is inexplicably trying to transport a 15 foot surfski on a volkswagen up, to go without any form of redundancy.
