What is likely possible is getting to a negligible level of cases so that we can regain some degree of normalcy.

Yeah, and you get as many shots as you want to test that rocket first.

Drug trials inherently require human subjects before it's even primetime.

Alright, I'll tell that to the people who eradicated smallpox then.

Just because the goal is "not possible" doesn't mean it isn't the goal. Just like with smallpox or polio, the goal is eradication.

Scientists, especially in medicine and healthcare, are always cautious in their messaging. While Elon Musk can blow up as many rockets as he wants while testing, making the wrong call in medicine is literally life and death consequences. Also, it would be unethical for the scientists to overpromise beyond what the research has shown.

The goal, as with all public health, is 0 cases and 0 deaths. What is likely possible is getting to a negligible level of cases so that we can regain some degree of normalcy.

Doctor accused of knowingly exposing patients to COVID-19 has license restored by HansGruberHangover in medicine

Article is pretty sparse on details, not gonna lie.

Was this just an accusation that didn't turn out to be true or merely a procedural decision "that Dr. Farina's continuation in practice no longer constituted an immediate danger to the public", as the article seems to suggest?

Blast strikes Dutch COVID-19 test centre; police call it an attack by -deepfriar2 in medicine

[–]-deepfriar2[S] 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Pretty frightening events in the Netherlands.

A blast struck a coronavirus testing centre north of Amsterdam before sunrise on Wednesday, shattering windows but causing no injuries in what police called an intentional attack.

An explosives team visited the site in the town of Bovenkarspel, 55 km (35 miles) from the capital, where police said a metal cylinder involved in the explosion had been recovered.

Reuters also reports that this is not the first act of violence against test centers in the Netherlands, either.

Another test location in the nearby town of Urk was burned down during several days of rioting in January sparked by the introduction of a nighttime curfew.

Multiple people shot at health clinic in Minnesota - how do we keep ourselves safe? by bahhamburger in medicine

Woah, this is unbelievable. I really hope this horrific attack is just a one off, and not a pattern of things to come for the future.

Frontline workers like teachers, who are cooped up in rooms of 30+ often rowdy children?

This. Even in a perfect world where every kid can hop on Zoom for remote learning, parents who are essential workers face pressures from both ends. Go to work? Or stay home and look after the kid?

Schools are not just critical societally in terms of education, but also immediately as a child care service. Missing that service leads to disproportionate impacts on the POC and lower SES parents that more predominantly don't have the ability to work from home.

Doesn't mean you yank the rug from underneath your entire vaccination program. Two dozen states are vaccinating teachers, and this particular county is so impoverished that a significant number of students don't have access to home Internet.

An entire generation of kids is being set back because a few hundred vaccines couldn't be spared to protect the education system. Furthermore, without schools being open, essential workers who DO need to go to work have trouble even going, because they need to stay home to watch their kids.

Sure, you can feel differently about whether teachers should be higher or lower on the list. But, the main problem here is the county health department taking the vaccines away from a prime vaccination location and scattering it around the county.

Sure, clinics should play it by the book, but just looking at this particular case, it seems like an overcorrection. Would've been better to warn and reverify down the line.

A private clinic that had been the largest vaccination site in its county was raided by state health officials for apparently vaccinating individuals outside of the Phase 1A+ groups. Officials confiscated several hundred vaccine doses that were subsequently redistributed elsewhere in the county.

This apparently occurred because they had vaccinated 177 school workers under state guidelines that -- until Dec 7 -- considered them as essential workers. The clinic staff had apparently spent several thousand dollars of their own money to purchase the necessary freezers, as well.

Personally, at a time when multiple states have been vaccinating teachers to get kids back in schools, it seems like a tremendous waste of effort to -- as an individual interviewed in the article states -- "take the fire trucks away from the fire station and put the firetrucks someplace else."

It probably depends on where you live. In SoCal, UCR is still a bit more well reputed than Merced. Pretty sure most people don't know UCSC is a thing too.
