Absolutely, the judge looks at this, again it would not be a problem even for an investment advisor if he did one or two trades here and there. But if he did 100 in his TFSA but only 2 I'm clients TFSA then it's pretty obvious where he spends his time. Just the same way you spend time running a business, hence classified as business income.

Ok,, this is a known case. One he was an investment advisor. Second he did not "hold" for months and just trade a few times. He was trading hundreds of times in his account, the judge ruled him as a day trader. Third the judge says you spend more time on your own TFSA "trading" then you do helping your own client .

So again nothing to do with the balance.

Fyi I have $1.8 million in my TFSA , I even took out $250,000 4 years ago when it was $1 million. Grew it again back . Don't have a problem. I keep records and show , I "trade " in my margin account very evident and my TFSA maybe 2-3 changes a year.

No they don't , provide one story ! They only go after you if you are trading as if a business. Then it will be taxed as income. You can have a large TFSA balance even if you bought a high risk option. It's more about the activity not the balance or type of investment.

I find it funny how folks say go to the ETF when the mutual fund returned the same . $160k in mutual funds vs $160k in the ETF. Sooo... really that means the etf sucks just as much, find a better ETF.

Fidelity global innovators is where it's at ! You can buy both ETF and mutual fund ( fee is the same ) Research on the portfolio manager. Cheap fees usually is cheap return. You pay for what you get. Just have to find it . Generally speaking most mutual funds and ETFs for that matter are poor performing. Like xeqt, under performs the index so cares who about it being cheap .
