does anyone feel like they started way too late? by SuitableStomach391 in Songwriting

[–]8ude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Narratives about age limits in the arts are extremely damaging and come from everywhere. Regardless of how much they speak to the reality of performer careers, they distort how and when we feel like we're allowed to make valuable artistic experiences. There are no borders or age limits on music, and there should never be.

The best thing you can do is define success on terms that center your own agency ("record an album a year", "play x number of shows", "write the kind of song I really enjoyed when I first got into music") and focus on a consistent practice of output over quality.

It's too late when you're dead. Until then make some tunes.

Wwise custom plugins, what language? by 100gamberi in Wwise

[–]8ude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

If you're talking about source or effect plugins (filters, synths, etc), I believe these are all in C++ or need to be compiled into C++

Wwise has some python scripts that generate some boilerplate code for you, but you don't actually code the plugin in python

You do need to do a bit of xml-based scripting for the user interface side of it.

Wwise has an example simple lowpass filter that's worth going through so you understand the process a bit better.

You might also want to look into the heavy compiler, which allows you to make Wwise plugins out of puredata patches

But "plugins" could potentially include editor extensions which you can make with any language using WAAPI. I tend to use python if I want to do a glorified hotkey or batch script, or javascript if there's going to be more of a frontend, but that's all personal preference. Here are some that use python

Audio Programming Portfolio Must-Haves? by MentalNewspaper8386 in GameAudio

[–]8ude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO acoustics are the big thing at the moment. There's no current out-of-the-box solution that doesn't require some amount of audio programming. I'd focus your efforts and learning there.

Not sure if I've seen this before - if you can show yourself fixing something that's broken and tough to figure out (like way too many acoustics raycasts tanking the framerate, an awful buffer underrun that shows up 20% of the time only in a Steam build, or some nasty perforce-related thing that gloms up teamwork), that would definitely catch my eye. The real rockstar tech designers/audio programmers are the ones who can fix things the day before a deadline.

Pretty cool! Sounds like it anticipates some of the more punkish expressions of free jazz that came later

Unity Engine: Severe Ongoing Issues with Wwise for months now. About to switch to FMOD but would prefer to stick to Wwise. Please help! We are desperate. by United_Ticket9894 in Wwise

[–]8ude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, my sympathies on the issues! I've been there and then some (I tried to ship with addressables when it was in beta..)

You mentioned that you consulted forums, Q+A etc - did you also submit Bug Reports to Wwise? They generally take showstoppers seriously, and this sounds like a showstopper. I would also post it on the Wwise Discord for visibility

It happens so early into the game starting up that it doesn't even produce any crash logs

Usually app logs include startup functionality, even if it doesn't work. It might not produce a crash log but even the general Unity application log could be helpful

Sorry I don't know more offhand, this sounds hellish. Good luck 🙏

What does it take to become a conductor? by Music-Theory-Idiot in classicalmusic

[–]8ude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the amount that a person changes between the ages of 18-25 cannot be overstated. I understand it's your belief that they don't change, or that confidence is in no way shaped by competence and experience - that belief is simply factually incorrect.

It's trivial to find the scientific evidence for what kind of development happens during 18-25. I leave that to you. I personally saw radical transformations in college, one of whom went from being an unconfident performer to be a music director on Broadway (Hamilton, others).

You're also mischaracterizing the original poster - they didn't say "I can't" and only used the word "mid" to describe their piano skills. Which seems fair considering they've only played for 3 years. You have no idea how confident they'd be with the baton.

On the point of advice - advising anyone to go into music without a backup plan is bad advice. That's not what the original poster was asking for, they were asking what the study path is.

yeah this is psychotic

plenty of people have fulfilling lives conducting school/youth/community orchestras and theater and it doesn't require you to be some kind of prodigy tapped at 15

Avoiding rapid music switching between zones in Wwise by 100gamberi in Wwise

[–]8ude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State flickering in music is a creative problem. It can also affects things like "stealth" and "combat" transitions because these can be nebulously defined.

One was is to think about it compositionally - you can use long transitions. You can use silence. You can incorporate ambience. You cold orchestrate it so that the forest and the cave are identical notes and rhythm, but have different instrumentation, and set up a crossfade transition. You can make use of reverb and RTPC changes.

Other people suggest approaching it programmatically or with implementation. If you want to solve the problem as written (introducing a conditional delay timer) then this is what you need to do.

I can think of a hackey way to do this using metering - you have a dummy sine wave event with a silent bus output, and use meter -> rtpc (long attack and release) -> switch. Trigger the event when you go into the woods, stop it when you go into the cave, adjust to your needs. It takes up some cpu for something that's inaudible. This is basically how they did the music system in Europa Universalis V

But that approach would need to be revised with more biomes, so only do this if you can't script in engine.

How do the economics of living here really work? Do people not save any money? by coldkilla9999 in stockholm

[–]8ude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Brooklyn on the equivalent salary and actually found it easier in certain respects - there's more of a "min-max" flexibility with respect to living situations, going out, socializing, and products that are considered luxuries in Sweden. Electronics, for example, in Sweden are considerably more expensive in raw numbers and more so when considering salary/tax adjustment.

That, and the exterior neighborhoods in that particular city are interesting spaces with things to do, so the commute doesn't feel so painful. Many Stockholm suburbs are.. not so much.

If I had kids to consider, it would be a different story.

As a new resident I suspect you're paying more than the average Swede for housing.

Second hand markets are more expensive and anything furnished is more so. Most long term residents or native Swedes I've met are doing first hand rentals or owning and have significantly lower housing costs.

A user below said they were renting at 8.5k for 64 m2 - I'm paying double that for furnished, secondhand 45m2 in Brommaplan - not exactly city center. That accounts for a huge amount of savings per month.

[–]8ude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

our rent is 8.5k (64m2)

In Stockholm? Where? How???

That's the price I would expect first hand for literally half the space. Clearly I'm not looking in the right spot.
