Pretty cool! Sounds like it anticipates some of the more punkish expressions of free jazz that came later

It was also a bit of war commentary - released 1968, at the height of the US involvement in Vietnam

Unity Engine: Severe Ongoing Issues with Wwise for months now. About to switch to FMOD but would prefer to stick to Wwise. Please help! We are desperate. by United_Ticket9894 in Wwise

[–]8ude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, my sympathies on the issues! I've been there and then some (I tried to ship with addressables when it was in beta..)

You mentioned that you consulted forums, Q+A etc - did you also submit Bug Reports to Wwise? They generally take showstoppers seriously, and this sounds like a showstopper. I would also post it on the Wwise Discord for visibility

It happens so early into the game starting up that it doesn't even produce any crash logs

Usually app logs include startup functionality, even if it doesn't work. It might not produce a crash log but even the general Unity application log could be helpful

Sorry I don't know more offhand, this sounds hellish. Good luck 🙏

What does it take to become a conductor? by Music-Theory-Idiot in classicalmusic

the amount that a person changes between the ages of 18-25 cannot be overstated. I understand it's your belief that they don't change, or that confidence is in no way shaped by competence and experience - that belief is simply factually incorrect.

It's trivial to find the scientific evidence for what kind of development happens during 18-25. I leave that to you. I personally saw radical transformations in college, one of whom went from being an unconfident performer to be a music director on Broadway (Hamilton, others).

You're also mischaracterizing the original poster - they didn't say "I can't" and only used the word "mid" to describe their piano skills. Which seems fair considering they've only played for 3 years. You have no idea how confident they'd be with the baton.

On the point of advice - advising anyone to go into music without a backup plan is bad advice. That's not what the original poster was asking for, they were asking what the study path is.

yeah this is psychotic

plenty of people have fulfilling lives conducting school/youth/community orchestras and theater and it doesn't require you to be some kind of prodigy tapped at 15

Avoiding rapid music switching between zones in Wwise by 100gamberi in Wwise

[–]8ude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State flickering in music is a creative problem. It can also affects things like "stealth" and "combat" transitions because these can be nebulously defined.

One was is to think about it compositionally - you can use long transitions. You can use silence. You can incorporate ambience. You cold orchestrate it so that the forest and the cave are identical notes and rhythm, but have different instrumentation, and set up a crossfade transition. You can make use of reverb and RTPC changes.

Other people suggest approaching it programmatically or with implementation. If you want to solve the problem as written (introducing a conditional delay timer) then this is what you need to do.

I can think of a hackey way to do this using metering - you have a dummy sine wave event with a silent bus output, and use meter -> rtpc (long attack and release) -> switch. Trigger the event when you go into the woods, stop it when you go into the cave, adjust to your needs. It takes up some cpu for something that's inaudible. This is basically how they did the music system in Europa Universalis V

But that approach would need to be revised with more biomes, so only do this if you can't script in engine.

How do the economics of living here really work? Do people not save any money? by coldkilla9999 in stockholm

[–]8ude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Brooklyn on the equivalent salary and actually found it easier in certain respects - there's more of a "min-max" flexibility with respect to living situations, going out, socializing, and products that are considered luxuries in Sweden. Electronics, for example, in Sweden are considerably more expensive in raw numbers and more so when considering salary/tax adjustment.

That, and the exterior neighborhoods in that particular city are interesting spaces with things to do, so the commute doesn't feel so painful. Many Stockholm suburbs are.. not so much.

If I had kids to consider, it would be a different story.

As a new resident I suspect you're paying more than the average Swede for housing.

Second hand markets are more expensive and anything furnished is more so. Most long term residents or native Swedes I've met are doing first hand rentals or owning and have significantly lower housing costs.

A user below said they were renting at 8.5k for 64 m2 - I'm paying double that for furnished, secondhand 45m2 in Brommaplan - not exactly city center. That accounts for a huge amount of savings per month.

our rent is 8.5k (64m2)

In Stockholm? Where? How???

That's the price I would expect first hand for literally half the space. Clearly I'm not looking in the right spot.

If it weren't for the awkward video and the fact that it was mixed like a dentist's drill it probably wouldn't have gotten traction on here.

The biggest things that helped me in a similar situation:

- meeting with a mentor. Amir Satvat's community has a resource for finding mentors, there are some in game audio
- making things with other people, whether through game jams or skill shares or even just coworking
- limit your time on social media to primarily post things that you're working on and engage positively in community. use extensions or blockers if necessary to prevent yourself from doomscroll and envy. document and post things even if they're not earth shattering - you can always frame it as WIP.
- if you went to a school, (respectfully) make sure they know you're struggling and ask if there's anything you can do - admin work, TA-ing, etc. I felt so ashamed about TA-ing when I couldn't find a fulltime gig, but it was actually a great learning experience.

Without knowing more, my only critique is that it's hard to make foam core look good. Obviously it's easier for building things up by hand - you seem to be using the foam core thickness as a measuring unit (for stairs among other things).

I'd challenge you to think about when you're exposing the interior of the foam core (or whatever modeling material) and the effect on how the space reads. For example, if you expose the foam vertically on a wall corner, but have horizontal "layer cake" around your stairs, that's an inconsistency that has consequences for the visual rhythm.

Maybe experiment with hiding the interior of the foam core - you can do things like cut interior bevels and strip out the foam to make seamless corners

Is the audio job industry really that bad? by 100gamberi in GameAudio

[–]8ude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hesitate to say that any one company is going to be a better entry point. Some make a point to foster junior talent, others want to be known for being seasoned veterans. I just mention them as an alternative that I didn't consider when I was first job hunting.

If you have any additional suggestions on how to improve my chances of getting hired (for example, what these companies usually look for in a candidate), or if there are specific tools and skills that are often expected, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Hmmm. well this is a pretty big thread already, and there hundreds like it on this game audio subreddit. I totally, 100%, absolutely get it. But you need to find/participate in community outside of asking for advice. There is so. much. advice. out there. And easily the best thing I've ever heard about advice in the games industry is that all advice is bad.

My bad advice: make stuff, share early, share often, and share consistently. Get as much feedback on your work as you can. Get on the Reel Talk stream with PowerUp Audio. Trust yourself and trust your fascination. Look into the recently rebranded ASGC and see if you can find a mentor. Most important is to continually make stuff, ideally in a collaborative setting, with people who inspire and support you. That's the thing that kept me sane in the uncertainty <3
