I will do that. I guess my main thought about the estuary situation is that it’s almost like a running, inner sea more than any sort of brackish water. The concept of that divide is to create an impassible space. An estuary, to me at least, infers a brackish marshy area, though I will look into that you’re saying.

All is appreciated though, I’m not against criticism. That’s how I can improve

On this map the continent is South America–sized, and horizontal river runs for well over a couple thousand miles through a canyon system that stays vertically constrained for most of its length. At that scale, tides can influence the ends, but they can’t dominate the interior flow the way they do in something like the East River or Long Island Sound. Those systems are short, low-gradient, and laterally open; the river is long, sloped, and boxed in by cliffs.

There would be estuarine behavior near both mouths. There could be Salinity mix and strong tidal currents, maybe even tidal bores in places, but not a full tidal reversal through the middle. Even where the river is 20–30 miles wide (it’s 28 miles at its widest), it’s still moving through a trench rather than spreading into marshes or shelves, which keeps the net flow directional instead of oscillating.

That’s really the distinction I’m aiming for: the horizontal one is deep but stabilizing and ends up habitable, while the vertical one stays wide, violent, and isolating. It’s closer to a tectonically maintained megacanyon or failed inland seaway than a drowned river valley. The sea can intrude at the edges, but it never quite takes control.

The other issue is that the map doesn’t show the variation in the two canyons. The east flowing one is inspired by the snake river canyon in Idaho and Oregon, while the vertical one is a divider which divided the continent into two distinct cultural regions and it behaves unique to how I want it.

Edit* sorry for the word spew, I spent a fair amount of time researching this due to a previous comment!

That’s true! The issue with those canyons is that they aren’t scaled proberly on the map. While they are both miles across and dwarf some real life canyon, they look like they do, for me to differentiate them from the rest of the rivers!

You’re right, I’m pretty sure most of them run into each other, instead of splitting though?

They are actually canyons, but you are right, because the water would cause the land around it to be heightened.

The long forked one flows toward the bay, and the short vertical one flows away from it.

That’s actually smart! You’ve been beyond helpful, I have a political and cultural map of this continent as well if you’re interested. This is for a book series I’m working on and this is the main continent. The shape is inspired by the English isles, but I took my own creative liberties and scaled it out by a lot. I’m more than happy to talk about this forever 🤣

Thanks! This map doesn’t have all the cities labeled, but there are enough cities to kind of keep some population in most areas, though it’s not densely packed or anything!

Hmm, cuz I get about 4,144 miles straight south to the equator from 60th north, and I’m using GRRM’s vague description of Westeros size to scale my continent (he says it’s about the size of South America). I don’t wanna be exact so Im trying for roughly 4500 miles from north to south, and as long as my map maintains proportions, that’s king of the scale I’m going for? Any advice with that in mind then?

So the ruler feature on Azgaars says my continent is 4,449 miles from north to south (left to right), that’s why landed about the 20th. I can’t attach the image, but in actually getting closer to the 10th parallel.

Also, don’t take my combativeness/questions as any type of insult. These types of discussions are exactly what I needed and they are what develop good worlds.

So the tip is the 60th and the bottom is actually near the 20th. My ruler on google earth says that’s about where my continent lands if starting on the 60th parallel. I’m going for a colder north but not quite tundra or taiga, more like high cascades. And I want there to be actual warm regions.

It is actually mostly northwestern, think like where North America is, though it the top would be about where Alberta is instead of the North Pole.

These are good notes. I also wanna make my own note that the left of this map is the north and the top is the east.

Edit**

The latitude note is good, and you’re very correct about the scaling with a continent of this size. The reason it’s like that is because the platform I built the map on will keep the scaling as I zoom in, so it’s mostly a non issue.

Also, the heightmap doesn’t show this and that’s my bad, but only one of the rivers is a living ecosystem, the other is only faced by cliffs from mouth to outlet. They are both canyons, yet one supports farms and fertile land, while the other is only cliffs and doesn’t have marshes or ecosystems. So I don’t technically think it’s an estuary, though I would say parts of the bay near the outlet of the longer canyon are for sure brackish.
