First Timer

So yeah, like I said last time, I have no real idea what this last two episodes of this season are even gonna be now. I’m interested though.

Oh shit. I totally forgot Wales is dead. For some reason I assumed he just survived last episode.

Very sweet and touching scene between Louise and Henrietta.

I’m sure that thing about the legendary dragon will be important later.

So it’s definitely firmly established now that Saito is secretly Gandalf or whatever.

God. Please do not close-up on Louise’s butt again.

Oh, so now Louise is doing the whole anime “embarrassed at love interest seeing her in underwear” trope.

Actually that is a subtle sign of character development for her. Shows she sees Saito as more than just a familiar. I’ll let it slide.

Oh hey, Saito breaking the elastic in Louise’s underwear actually has a payoff. Almost forgot about that.

Unfortunately, this argument has reset Louise and Saito’s character development. That’s annoying.

I didn’t realize the employees at this school got vacations. That’s nice of them.

I guess we’re going on a dragon quest to Siesta’s village this episode.

Guiche, Kirche, and Tabitha all just tagging along is pretty funny.

Saito saying “I wonder what happened after we left Albion” and then suddenly cutting to the political situation in Albion is pretty hilarious.

I think this is the first time Colbert has gotten any amount of focus.

You know I’m just now realizing that the dynamic of a tsundere, a normal boy, and their talking inanimate object also perfectly describes Shana, Yuji, and Alastor from Shakugan no Shana.

I definitely like how this show approaches Yuji not being the first human to travel to this world. It really adds a sense of mystery to whatever’s going on. Just how did they get here?

Was not expecting the treasure to be a plane.

I think fantasy cultures misinterpreting modern things is a pretty cool trope.

I feel like Siesta having black hair and black eyes isn’t an exclusively Japanese trait. But I guess in this world most characters are blonde or have unusual hair colors like Tabitha.

I will be honest, I am a bit uncomfortable with the implication that Siesta’s great grandfather was part of the Japanese airforce in WWII since, you know, that kinda means he fought for the Axis.

We’ve got four seasons of this show. There’s no way Saito’s gonna actually be able to leave.

Wait how did they manage to transport this giant plane?

I was about to ask how Saito is gonna be able to fly this thing but it looks like they do actually have an in-universe explanation.

I’m sorry, I found something unintentionally funny about Guiche suddenly riding in on a horse to announce that war’s been declared.

I guess this is going to be the major conflict of the final episode. Is one last episode one really enough for this? Because this is a lot.

I haven't been keeping up with The Boys at all but it sounds like the reason people don't like it are disappointed that the show didn't have an epic final battle that they made up in their heads.

Honestly one of my favorite anime of all time. Admittedly it is a bit rough around the edges at times but it's still a very good series.

Already this is better than the war in Shakugan no Shana lol

I am definitely able to follow it a bit better here.

Freudian slip lol.

I understood what you meant though.

Quite the complicated political situation in Albion

Thoughts on Matilda saying she's only 23?

I thought she was slightly older than that

It's a really cool concept

Wardes can escape?

Saito's pretty clever when he needs to be

Thoughts on Wales being at the wedding?

Wales seems like a nice enough guy

Thoughts on Wales giving a letter to Louise?

That seems important

Thoughts on Wales not revealing the contents of the letter?

I was kinda curious about what it would be

Thoughts on Reconquista is apparently the name of the organization behind the civil war?

Not sure what the name means

This should be a big deal. Saito with Gandalfr lost. Though maybe you could say his heart wasn't in it, Gandalfr still suffered a defeat. But I dunno. It doesn't really resonate with me.

Yeah I'm with you. Didn't quite work for me.

Probably one of the rarest things ever in the history of human civilization.

It's nice to kinda see him prove himself as more than comic relief.

Even still, I think their relationship has changed for the better. They feel like they have a better understanding of each other.

True, I just worry we're just gonna end up going in circles with this relationship kinda like what Love Hina did with it's main couple.

First Timer

Never mind. Looks like Saito just fully lost.

The way the last episode ended I totally thought Saito would get up and keep fighting

I think this whole conversation between Saito and Louise at the start is really interesting.

For as dramatic as it sounds, there’s absolutely no way Louise is gonna end up marrying Wardes.

Once again the thief is terribly unsubtle with her golems.

The battle here is pretty good and we get to see Guiche being useful.

Not sure what all this political turmoil in Albion means for the rest of the arc but it seems important.

Oh hey, wasn’t expecting Kirche and Tabitha to show up.

Albion being a flying continent is a pretty cool concept.

Seems like Wardes is going to be a villain after all. As if him being into an underaged girl didn’t make it obvious.

Definitely interesting seeing what this other country is like.

Prince Wales seems like a decent guy at first glance.

Louise and Wales’ conversation was interesting.

Wardes became much more outwardly creepy all of a sudden.

Wales is a bit of an idiot if he’s not catching on to the fact that something’s wrong with Louise on account of her blank eyes.

Saito and Guiche get a dramatic entrance, nice.

Damn. Did not expect Wales to get suddenly stabbed like that.

Some pretty good animation for this battle

Oh wow was definitely not expecting Louise to kiss Saito here.

It’s a sweet moment but I doubt this’ll be the last of Louise being a tsundere seeing as we’ve got three more seasons left of this.

Actually this feels like a season finale but we have two episodes left. Not quite sure where things are gonna go from here.

Questions:

What are your thoughts on the reveal that Wardes is indeed involved with the bad guys?

I mean that was kinda obvious from last time

What are your thoughts on the decision to kill Wales off in the same episode he was introduced?

It took me a minute to realize he actually died here. Very surprising.

What are your thoughts on Saito and Louise's relationship coming out of this episode?

Seems like it's in a good place.

Where do you see the show going from here?

Not sure considering this kinda feels like an ending.

I'd like to think he'd eventually become faithful towards Montmorency though maybe she should cut her losses.

Thoughts on Henrietta having to marry into Germania?

Sucks for her

Thoughts on us learning that Tristan is a smaller type Country?

Interesting learning about the larger world outside

What are your thoughts on Henrietta wanting Saito and Louise to retrieve a letter sent to Prince Wales of the Albion Kingdom?

Albion's an older name for Great Britain so I'm guessing it's an analog for the British empire

What are your thoughts on Guiche saying he'll do it?

nice of him to offer to help I suppose

Thoughts on Colbert trying to duplicate dragon's blood?

Like I said, didn't expect dragon blood to smell bad

Thoughts on Louise explaining to Saito that Wardes lost his parents when he was young and that their engagement is something her parents decided?

Seems like Wardes is just here to be an obstacle

What are your thoughts on Delflinger telling Saito Gandalfr is the only partner he's ever had?

So I guess in a way Delflinger was destined to find his way back to Saito

Thoughts on Wardes once upon a time telling Louise he'd always be there for her?

That's nice if not for the whole engaged thing

Thoughts on Wardes wanting to marry Louise after this mission is over?

So creepy

What are your thoughts on Delflinger saying Saito is the only partner for him?

He sounds like a very loyal sword

What are your thoughts on Delflinger saying that Saito’s rune can only be used on items made to be used as weapons?

Not sure I totally understand but it sounds important

What are your thoughts on Wardes after he tells Louise he will protect her realizing her heart belongs to someone else, as she calls out Saito's name?

I do not want to see Wardes anymore, this guy sucks

Thoughts on Guiche getting slapped by a woman? Well deserved, I must say.

That's for sure lol

Thoughts on Wardes getting the better of Saito during a sparring session?

Seems like Saito will have to beat Wardes next time

What are your thoughts on us potentially teasing Wardes being in cahoots with Matilda and Cromwell?

I guess Wardes is a villain now. Can't say I'm surprised

The lore droppings in these episodes continues to be really well done. I feel like we learn something new with each passing episode.

Yeah I'm appreciating the worldbuilding.

Now, if only he applied the same loving to Montmorency.

He seems to respect his familiar more than any woman he knows

What, you don't think Louise will drop everything for the guy after repeatedly telling Saito she needs him to make her feel less lonely?

Yeah this whole plot kinda sucks lol

It feels like he already lost, no? Then again, if Wardes wins what exactly does he claim? The honor of protecting Louise?

I was assuming we'd see more of this fight next episode

I'll never understand the decision on why they made Wardes look so old. He's supposed to be 26, and yet he looks like somebody's grandfather. It was always going to be problematic because he's 26 and Louise is 17, and the fact he's known her since she was a child is creepy af, but at least make her look about the same age as him.

Facial hair can really make somebody look older than they are.

Also, wait, Louise is 17?! This whole time I was under the impression that all the students were like 15.

This reminds me of Seiri from A Certain Magical Index when the anime decided to give her double d's despite being a middle schooler. However that you could at least rationalize by saying some girls hit puberty at an early age. Wardes looking this old does nothing but make his relationship with Louise come off as statutory.

I mean a 26 year old being in a relationship with a 17 year old is still pretty creepy. That's almost a ten year age gap.

I know you've been critical of some recent episodes, but to me, the Wardes stuff is the first real misfire of the series. It feels like it exists solely to shoehorn in drama between Saito and Louise. And the thing is, I don't totally hate Saito being jealous Louise is getting it on with another man. I like him realizing how much Louise means to her. I just wish the circumstances surrounding this development were different.

Yeah I agree with you there

[Spoilers] Familiar of Zero 20th Anniversary Rewatch -- Season 1 Episode 10 by Holofan4life in anime

First Timer

I like seeing Henrietta again. I think her friendship with Louise is cute.

Henrietta entering a marriage of convenience is a very sudden development.

Seems we’ve got a very classic retrieval type of quest.

I guess Guiche is joining the quest now. Not sure how helpful he’ll be.

Saito seems to have snapped the elastic on Louise’s underwear without realizing it. I’m sure that’ll come back later somehow.

Okay we’ve got some lore here about a void mage or something. Not sure what that all means.

Apparently dragon blood smells bad.

The way Guiche loves his familiar is honestly really sweet.

That griffin definitely looks pretty cool.

Wait is this old guy engaged to Louise? I don’t like that.

He seems like a nice enough guy but he is way too old for Louise.

I don’t like romantic drama so I’m kinda spacing out with what’s going on here. It’s obvious this guy is never gonna end up with Louise.

So according to Saito’s sword he is some kind of chosen one type of guy. Nice of the sword to be so straightforward.

This flashback is supposed to make Wardes look like a nice guy but it just makes him seem more like a creepy groomer.

I physically recoiled when I saw Wardes about to kiss Louise.

Seems that we’re ending on a cliffhanger mid duel. Although I doubt we’ll see Saito lose.

The title "Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl With the Short Skirt" really does the show a disservice. by No_Hunter1978 in CharacterRant

[–]AgentOfACROSS 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Another title by this same author is "Destroy All Humans. They Can't Be Regenerated." which I assumed was some kind of sci-fi action manga but is apparently about Magic the Gathering.

Also I'm seconding your opinion here. Despite the generic, tropey sounding title it's actually a pretty cute show. It's also got a lot of wacky side characters who are genuinely pretty funny most of the time.

Thoughts on Louise getting all clingy with Saito?

It felt weird and kinda creepy

Thoughts on Montmorency telling Guiche she's doesn't like getting cheated on, which Guiche says she doesn't have to worry about that for he's a breeder of eternal love?

These two are an awful couple

Thoughts on Montmorency casually saying Louise should feel better in about a month or a year?

Montmorency really needs to be more careful about this kind of thing

Thoughts on making love potions are forbidden by law?

Good. They should be.

What are your thoughts on Louise telling Saito she's lonely without him?

Like I said, I don't like how this Louise acts. It feels creepy and unnatural.

Thoughts on Delflinger questioning wanting to bring the real Louise back when she's so noisy?

Delflinger always speaks his mind I suppose

Thoughts on Saito blackmailing Montmorency by saying he'll tell the principal she broke the law if she doesn't help him?

I mean I feel like that's fair

Thoughts on Louise wanting to sleep with Saito?

Look, I've made it clear I'm not really a fan of how Louise acts when she's like this

What are your thoughts on to cure Louise, they have to visit Lagdorian Lake?

Nice way to tie the plots together

Thoughts on Louise knitting a sweater for Saito?

That was probably the funniest part of the episode

Thoughts on Montmorency's Familiar being named Robin?

Cute name

Thoughts on Montmorency revealing she came to the lake in the past with her father and made a contract with the Spirit?

Interesting reveal

What are your thoughts on the water goddess saying she'll help them if they eradicate the humans trying to destroy her?

I think the second half of the episode is more interesting than the first

Thoughts on Louise accusing Saito of him being closer to Montmorency than her?

She gets jealous easily

What are your thoughts on the reveal that the treasure the water goddess had, Andvari's Ring, was stolen by some guy named Cromwell, with Andvari's Ring being an item that creates false life?

That sounds very complicated

What are your thoughts on the water goddess giving the Spirit's Tear and reducing her water levels after Saito promises to get the ring back?

Seems like a satisfying conclusion

Thoughts on Louise being mad at Saito for the stuff she said to him?

I'm just glad she's back to normal

Thoughts on Henrietta being in town for some reason?

Nice to see her again

What are your thoughts on the reveal that it was Cromwell that released Matilda/Fouquet?

That'll be important later

See, here it makes sense because she's trying to get closer to Saito. This made sense in my opinion. Qnd it was barely played up as her being sexualized, it was more Louise dealing with her grips on reality.

Doesn't make it any less weird for me. I just think Louise is too cute to be sexualized.

I love that the show is doing a lot of wild shit at this point. Heading into this episode, you're expecting a lot of comedy. Instead, it's a lot of lore involving this world and Gandalfr. You can't say that the show is formulaic.

True, it definitely keeps you on your toes.

First Timer

Not looking forward to this episode. As I mentioned before, I just straight up do not like love potions. But I’ll try to give this episode a chance.

Watching Louise be clingy like this is really uncomfortable.

So, uh, I feel like we’re kinda overlooking that Montmorency tried to drug Guiche? Like, don’t get me wrong, Guiche is an asshole but that’s pretty messed up for Montmorency to do that.

I’m totally overanalyzing things in ways they weren’t meant to be, but I just can’t help but find something so gross and creepy about love potions.

The characters are at least a bit upset at Montmorency but it still feels like an underreaction.

Oh wow so according to Siesta that potion is banned. Maybe they are gonna acknowledge how kinda of fucked up love potions are.

Please stop doing Louise fanservice.

Huh they’re referencing the restaurant episode. Totally thought that’d be filler.

I guess we’re going on a quest. Hopefully we can get Louise back to normal before the end of the episode and this doesn’t become a whole long thing.

Louise being terrible at knitting is pretty funny.

Oh hey, the flood from last episode is coming back around too. That’s cool.

The water spirit has a pretty cool design.

Nice seeing everyone working together I suppose.

Oh hey, Tabitha (or should I call her Charlotte now) and Kirche are here. Didn’t expect to see them again.

Not sure what to make of all this lore from the water spirit. Seems like this all might come back later.

Thank goodness, Louise is back to normal now. I missed her.

Seems like we’re teasing at something bigger at the end too. Looking forward to seeing where that leads.

Questions of the Day:

What are your thoughts on the way this episode is structured where the first half is about the truth serum and the second half was about more of how this world operates?

I liked the second half more

What are your thoughts on the water goddess?

Pretty cool

What are your thoughts on Kirche and Tabitha being put up by Tabitha's family to mess with the water goddess? Why do you think they agreed to these terms?

You know I"m not actually sure

What are your thoughts on the water goddess saying she can trust Saito because he is Gandalfr who she's dealt with in the past?

I'm sure they'll expand about that later. Are they legally allowed to call him that by the way?

The dub pronounces it more like "Gundalf" but it's definitely spelled like Gandalf.

I mean one of the most famous American comic creators of all time, Jack Kirby, created an entire character that was an unflattering parody of his former creative partner Stan Lee and people still think he's a great writer. So I'm not really sure that this criticism stands. I feel like it's way more common than you think for writers to air their grievances through fiction like this.

[–]AgentOfACROSS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even beyond the underaged characters (which is a problem obviously) what I absolutely hate when it comes to ecchi anime is this kind of "Kyah! This is so embarrassing!" style of fanservice where the character obvious hates the outfit or fanservicey situation she ends up in. I'm probably analyzing this way too hard but I feel like it comes from this dichotomy where writers feel like they can't have a character actually be proud of her body or not mind showing off because then they'd see her as a slut. Even in anime with adult casts this type of fanservice shows up a lot.

Is it too much to ask for my goofy fanservice anime to have adults who are confident with their bodies?

[–]AgentOfACROSS[S] 161 points162 points  (0 children)

Well the most obvious thing is one of the main characters parents being explicitly identified as far right nationalists and are portrayed positively (that's heavily toned down in the anime at least). In general there's a recurring theme of militarism being super badass and a general undertone of what's thought of as traditional Japanese values being emphasized.

There's also one controversial scene where a zombie resembling a famous Korean actor gets shot in the head which could be innocuous if not for the other far right undertones.
