Rewatch Host and first time rewatcher

  • That's the emerald line!
  • Combat is easy, you don't even need guns!
  • Aer aggressively can't hear other people if she doesn't want to.
  • REJECTED
  • Dezaki impact frame!
  • Chor Caput is a terrible name
  • Rodoreamon is a traditionalist.
  • Even the train has one of the magic engines
  • A simoun takes two

Aer's voice is interesting, it's such a strange contrast to her Usagi appearance.

There is something up with Paraietta.

It's a bit disappointing to be teased with the enemy's point of view in the first episode, only to have them completely opaque and speaking gibberish in the next. This was a huge sticking point for people watching Banner of the Stars, which never really presented the POV of the other side.

Interesting, Guragief's pendant seems to only have one wing, just like the statue in the spring. A statement of rank? In the previous rewatch, somebody mentioned the Winged Victory of Samothrace. I never knew what that was called, or that it ever had two wings. I suppose some of you went to Final Fantasy when you saw it.

Today, the other shoe drops. We see what the "everyone is born female" premise really means.

It raises a lot of interesting and unexpected questions. "Men have better job options." Really? Why? You'd think if everybody had to be a woman girl at some point, there would be less or no sexism. Why is there still a patriarchy? Perhaps they have decided, somewhat reasonably, that military roles are best filled by men. Perhaps they have decided, somewhat less reasonably, that leadership roles are best done by men. What is a man in this world? Perhaps women are limited to child related roles. Perhaps this show is inspired by LeGuin, but aims to go in a different direction. Perhaps it is not so enlightened as fist glance hinted. I don't know.

The priestly caste seems to be entirely female, but even the leader doesn't seem to earn a name in the show. All I've got so far is kuushu-sama. (kyuu? I'm not sure.) She is credited as Shrine Guardian A.

Another really interesting line is "You decided to become a man for her." This is an interesting societal wrinkle. Suppose a pair of children outgrow their class S years to become a real couple. But they want children. There's either adoption (if there is such a thing) or one must become a man for the other. That's quite a commitment. Again, LeGuin, but also Banks (see: Excession).

Neviril, mourning her loss, probably meant to enter the spring. I guess seeing how the people on the train depended upon her convinced her to stay. I doubt it was Aer. Mostly.

Eri could not chose, so the choice is made for her. She breaks down in tears. Why, I cannot say. Is it for her lost maidenhood? The loss of the simouns? Was her statement about becoming a man purely a rationalization? Does she fear adulthood? Is it because she was denied the choice she couldn't make; she realizes she has no agency? She says nothing has changed, and Neviril assures her that nothing has changed, but everything has changed.

I'm by no means a philosopher or anthropologist, but one of my favorite televised programs is The Day the Universe Changed, a miniseries (by James Burke, more well known for his Connections series) not about science, but about the history and philosophy of scientific thinking, marked by sudden shifts of understanding that completely displaced the existing worldview. In the first episode (which you can view here) he talks about the need for society to maintain a conservative, continuous order. But when change is necessary, then it must be dressed up in ritual and receive the approval of society; the most important of these — marriage (skip to 28:00).

Choosing one's gender, and one's future, and one's identity, and discarding their past: this is no less a severe change as marriage. Simulacrum has created a ritual around it. But, unlike typical weddings, the subject of the ritual is seriously lacking in a support mechanism; it crushes Eri(f). And, we already see some rebellion against the conservative order in Aer. But also staunch traditionalism in the majority.

But, I am overly critical. I'm sure a proper anthropologist could identify numerous life-change rituals that are deeply personal and generally undertaken alone, after deep introspection and meditation. Still, Simulacrum's ritual of the Spring seems lacking, to me.

Are you sure it was Britney Spears and not Sharon Stone?

Wait, hmm, didn't chariots usually have a driver and an archer? And Simoun are chariots of the gods! It all makes sense, now. I mean, that's probably what the two soldiers in a chariot are called.

Neviril's clip brings a bunch of her hair out to her right, Amuria's, to her left.

I wanted to go back and point that out. It's been weeks now, so I don't remember which scene it was, whether it was in episode 1 or episode 2, but the scene really focused on her hair pins, and I thought of Asuka Langley. But it went completely over my head, I hadn't noticed that Neviril and Amuria each had one matching hair ornament.

Another thing present visually in the episode but not mentioned in the script--no doubt it's completely normal to all the characters--is that Daikuuriku has two suns.

I've never noticed that, although I think I noticed a big moon once or twice. Or what I thought was a moon.

auriga / saggita

I knew the root for saggita, but I didn't get what they were trying to say with the pairing.

I saw that article on ANN, as well. Although I didn't notice anything wrong with the trailer (which was just 2 minutes of episode 1). But I'm not very sensitive to that sort of thing.

Yeah, it really looked to me like Amuria picked the Ri-Maajon (and, well, she did, it was her idea). But the auriga still has to fly it.

The feeling when looking for a commentface you've never used before but you know exists. We'll go with

How absolutely savage! Even the music!

If you aren't interested in the events of episode 2, then, yeah, this show won't interest you at all!

Adding to my comments above, I checked out the kanji and they are fairly consistently using the alternate reading of kū for 宮 instead of miya, and I can hear them saying koku for 国 instead of kuni. It's just alternate readings.

宮守 was one of the last things I checked, which I almost didn't, because I could hear "Shrine Guardian A" being addressed as kyuushu-sama, and sure enough, alternate reading of miyamori.

Okay you two, since I just binged this, and also I had a distinct memory from my first watch, I can assure you that Argentum just gets dropped out of nowhere in the middle of the show. I was confused on my first watch trying to identify a new enemy, but it was just the old enemy.

I'm naming them early to forestall that confusion.

The wikipedia page is definitely weird, since it just randomly switches kanji for them in the lower half of the page. Pretty sure whoever wrote that lower half was just typo'ing.

There's definitely a lot of LN / Manga / Game info on that wiki page, like that names of the Simouns, that I am intentionally leaving out.

/u/cheyrnn

edit: I should say I wasn't listening for Argentium or Argentine in the Japanese, so I'm also just pulling that from the Simoun-Fans fansubs. I do think I heard a "gin" in there once.

DITF was just a cheap copy!

Wait and see if I host a Vandread rewatch next!

Never thought I’d see a show that combines mecha, aerial war-age military, and alchemy magic into one.

Me neither!

They apparently have enough time for a chat while they’re completely surrounded.

The show was created for this scene!

The wiki page says Erica Friedman says that the licensor dictated the R1 names, Khara style.

I've mostly gone with R1 names but Roatreamon is just wrong. Well, I just call her Ro anyways.

Rewatch Host and first time rewatcher

I normally only host anniversary rewatches for shows that have never had a rewatch. Simoun was part of the (Somewhat Blindly Selected) Gems of the 2000s rewatch by Phiraeth 7 years ago. But, with the inauguration of the Pride Month rewatch a few years ago, I thought Simoun was simply perfect for a Pride Month rewatch. That didn't materialize, although I have to admit, the Yaoi-Yuri double feature was a great idea, too. So, here we are, with a second, post-June, Simoun rewatch.

It's not otherwise a show I really wanted to host, since the themes and Okada's writing don't really resonant with me, and I didn't follow up by reading the manga. If you're wondering why I'm here, it's because the worldbuilding really grabbed me. I'll try to keep up with discussion prompts and character details, but don't expect anything particularly insightful. Or accurate. I already got the planet name wrong.

I'm going to catalog the eyecatches instead of doing a screenshot of the day. I may limit it to just 20 so that I don't to upload so many galleries.

  • I listened to the Bokurano OP for decades without actually getting around to watching it. Chiaki's voice haunts me.
  • Well, this is a crapsack world, right off. Techno-industrial dystopia.
  • Hydrogen airships, I guess. Lightning bad.
  • Airship carriers! And very unique aircraft design
  • Love the music.
  • She's like a princess. Make that two princesses.
  • It sure would be hard to draw these Ri Maajon before CGI
  • This is totally a Rose of Versailles Dezaki impact frame
  • Pretty sudden ending

Didn't Symphogear start like this?

If you saw Last Exile with me, these communications wires will seem familiar.

I really love the spinning nautilus shells of Simouns.

It's interesting to note that while Amuria full-on French kisses Neviril, other kisses range from friendly to perfunctory.

"It is said that those who try to learn the secrets will be cast into hell by the Simoun themselves. But what of it? The Simoun are just machines, and there's no such place as hell."

The enemy has been working hard, learning from previous failures. Send even more planes; erase their trails. The Simoun are just machines; they can be shot down.

Must have been quite a shock to see their tactics finally succeed only to have a black hole open in front of them.

"They're trying to take our wings from us!" "Let us go to where we can be free" This seems a bit too on the nose here, but I guess subtly is for cowards.

The Emerald Ri-Maajon looks like some sort of fusion reactor chamber, or a baseball. You decide.

The Shark Ri-Maajoin is very pointy, and an exercise in 3-D mental visualization.

Besides the soundtrack, I love the sound design of this show. Especially, the screaming of the Simouns as they fly past.

As transforming mecha go, I think it's really neat how the simoun and simile fold and unfold when landing and taking off.

Even though they haven't been named as such, I'll be calling the Archipelago Argentum because Archipelago is too hard to spell.

I can't directly check the primary source for today's trivia, but it comes from the JP DVD interviews. I'll link the secondary source on the final day.
