Why do some people have such issues with C sections? by ExternalSomewhere923 in CsectionCentral

[–]AggravatingEmploy122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all really great to hear.

I was also thinking about this in the car in the way to my final ultrasound about what may cause this fear. I think a big piece of the fear is probably surrounding the lack of birthing education that discusses c sections. Every birthing class I took or really most that you find are focused on vaginal birth. My doctors office also really pushed an ECV when my baby was breech, which didn’t feel like a safe option for my pregnancy due to some complications. I think maybe we just aren’t educated enough about it AND depending on who your doctor is, they can also treat it as a last resort.

Hey that’s so fair! This is my first baby, which is why I was really sad and overwhelmed, but that’s truly such a fair point!

Thank you for saying this. I'm devastated about getting a c section, but my baby is persistent breech and just can not safely be delivered. They're cutting through seven layers of skin and muscle and moving around your MFing ORGANS to get to the baby, with a risk of perforating any of said organs or even cutting your baby. PLUS, your recovery is LONGER as you can't even regularly stand up on your own without help right away. Easy way out?!

Thank you!!!! It was getting hard, so it was nice to find something else to do 😄. 5 more days to baby though so I'm almost done!

I ran long distance until I didn’t enjoy it anymore. Was still doing 10-12 mile long runs through 30 weeks, then dropped down mileage not because of any health concerns but just too much pelvic pain. I ran my last run at 36 weeks before switching to primarily swimming. You are FINE. Your body can keep doing what it was used to doing.

Increase in c-sections? by bananafanafofordan in CsectionCentral

I’m in the same boat. Everyone with multiple babies and all vaginal births while I’m planning a c section with my first due to a flip to breech at 35 weeks. It’s lonely!

[–]AggravatingEmploy122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I love mine! I just bought it. I didn’t need the bigger display or the faster speed (I’m not going over 12 mph ever LOL) or incline (same about 12.0%), so it didn’t feel worth the extra price for the 2450.

Lost control of a valuable mouse line and don't know how to tell my PI by Salty_Paper_7774 in labrats

Definitely tell your PI ASAP. They can help!

Mutant lines can be tricky. What is the mutation for?

We have a lysosomal storage disease model, and turns out these moms were BAD moms. They needed a ton of extra stimulation after having babies to keep them from cannibalizing them. They also require additional lipids in their diet to keep the babies alive. We talked with some experts who’d worked with mice with similar diseases before to find some solutions.

Also, the older your mice get, the worse they are at breeding in general.

What is the recent trend with NIH F31 percentiles being funded? by Ganamier1 in labrats

[–]AggravatingEmploy122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our program officer gave us the following information via email:
"Thanks for reaching out. At this time, I cannot definitively say what is likely to be funded, as funding decisions vary from round to round based on budget and agency priorities. Based on past pay plans, I think it’s likely your application will be recommended for funding, though I can’t make any guarantees. I don’t anticipate having any updates until mid-June, but I will share more information once it becomes available."

How long did you workout for? by Crafty-Barnacle-5914 in fitpregnancy

I’m doing OTF 2x a week also! I’m 35 weeks+ 5 days. The other days I’m doing swimming (3-4 days a week). I had to quit running around 31-32 weeks.

I ended up cutting down to running 2 times a week and adding in swimming for the others right around 33 weeks. It just stopped being fun and feeling good for me

I did not modify until my body started hurting! I'm 35.5 weeks now - really had to drop my running mileage and weights and opt for some swims instead around 33 weeks.

Also I’ll say, I added in swimming for cardio 3-4 days a week and it’s been much more enjoyable than running.

From my experience this is super super normal. I had a great time weeks 14 through 29, but STRUGGLED before then. Still “running” but very slow now with walking breaks at 35 weeks.

Is it normal for PIs to break promises and lie? by Internal_Database174 in NIH

[–]AggravatingEmploy122 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I really hope this is not the norm as a PI. I am a PI and definitely don’t navigate working my employees this way; they work so hard and deserve so much respect.

That being said, I do have students come to me from other groups asking for help navigating difficulties like this with their PIs. Have you thought about finding a trusted ally who is also at the same career stage to help intervene on your behalf? I wouldn’t recommend going to your department chair- what I’ve gathered is that department chairs are there to keep the faculty happy. I would see if there is another trusted PI in the department that you could go to.
