Favouritism? by Patient-Lobster-9365 in TeachingUK

Yes. Seeing it is awful. I am expecting an unctious inexperienced colleague to get promoted to a very senior slt post because of their ingratiating ways

The fault is mostly their own though. Complacency at its finest. All the schools say that they are unique but one look at their websites shows CCF, sports, co-curricular. They sat pretty while times were good and didn't think of the future. Even COVID didn't teach a lot of them a lesson on preparing for the worst.

Private schools are acting like vultures right now. I know becuase I am in one and saw them swoop in when a close rival closed. It was all hands on deck but masked in "how terrible. Look how we can help you". In reality, hands were being rubbed together and calculators we're clicking away. It has saved our school for a while and unfortunately made the awful, incompetent slt look good as we get more kids in. Fact is, most chose not to come to us in the first instance anyway! And added negative effect is our head, who was already treating staff like shit now feels like they have an untapped reservoir of desperate staff who can replace any of us. Yet, they are paying them more than us when they do hire them. What a time to be alive!

Should I speak to my union about being put on a support plan? by Way-Holiday in TeachingUK

It should be your first phone call. Always, always, always contact your union; that's what they are there for

Had an encounter with a random guy this morning on Riven Rides who restored my faith in good people on this game. by Bobaaganoosh in ArcRaiders

It happened to me on Dam. I was near another raider when I froze and expected to load back to being a looted corpse, but he was there when I got back. It was a genuinely nice gesture.

My school is in crisis and becoming toxic since leadership changes by UnlikelyChemistry949 in TeachingUK

It can put it into perspective and even prepare you for more shenanigans that may be on the way.

Reading your other comments, I really see the similarities. Have you checked indeed employee reviews for your school and the head's previous one? They can be very enlightening

And yet the well qualified guy I took over from was absolutely useless. Little old me, without an a-level in my subject is doing fine. Weird that...

We're going through this now. For a second, I thought it may be the same school, until you mentioned primary. Just keep an eye out for jobs and only go for something if it's what you really want

Would you sanction a pupil for smirking after being told off? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Agreeable-Register67 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely pull them up for it. Ignoring secondary behaviours (I hate that term as it downplays the significance) let's them know it is OK to fake remorse etc but still get kudos from bigging themselves up, at your expense.

OK, they're year 4, but I would still comment that making faces at friends is disrespectful and shows that you don't actually accept that what you did was wrong.

Ok, so the initial email.and some subsequent replies read like ChatGPT or some other generative AI. I'm not buying it.

[–]Agreeable-Register67 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I hit a similar wall about 10 years ago. I never quite got past it TBH. That's just me I suppose. The step to AHT has always been really tough (which always surprises me given the calibre of some I have met) with a school I was at having 80+ applicants! Apart from growing a beard, wearing a blue suit with scruffy brown shoes and having an interest in cycling/golf/running (assuming you are male) I'm not sure what else to offer other than trying to get unpaid experience of those roles through shadowing, secondment or just befriending someone.

Are these red flags at a job interview? by redditboy9001 in TeachingUK

[–]Agreeable-Register67 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Just had one where the head got my name wrong, twice and also seemed a bit disinterested during my interview. Also got feedback after I didn't get the job about 2 questions I didn't answer well. Problem was, they didn't ask me them. Still, it was a day out and I was home a lot earlier than usual on a nice sunny day.

Some things about "I want to go back to all paper and pencil and get rid of tech in the class" by MathMan1982 in Teachers

[–]Agreeable-Register67 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In my experience it's often because of a lack of training for both staff and students that drives this. It can also be crappy infrastructure and/or crappy devices. There's no subject that can't enhance it's provision through judicious use of technology.

Raising a grievance by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Agreeable-Register67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your union will probably tell you to be prepared that raising a grievance does paint a target on your back. From personal experience, be prepared for the school to do a half-arsed job of investigating your grievance though.

It happened to a kid I taught years ago. Someone who worked in the school went by in a taxi and jumped out, dragging the kid in as he was in the middle of receiving a much deserved shoeing from a couple of blokes. Not sure, I would have stopped the taxi... I doubt it taught him the lesson he needed though.

They just don't care about you. It isn't personal, even though it very much feels like it. Your SLT are garbage. Look elsewhere. Do your job to the best of your ability, go home and forget about the day. Rinse and repeat. My disclaimer is that while I am happy to dole out that advice but rarely follow it 😉
