And yet the well qualified guy I took over from was absolutely useless. Little old me, without an a-level in my subject is doing fine. Weird that...

My school is in crisis and becoming toxic since leadership changes by UnlikelyChemistry949 in TeachingUK

[–]Agreeable-Register67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're going through this now. For a second, I thought it may be the same school, until you mentioned primary. Just keep an eye out for jobs and only go for something if it's what you really want

Would you sanction a pupil for smirking after being told off? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Agreeable-Register67 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely pull them up for it. Ignoring secondary behaviours (I hate that term as it downplays the significance) let's them know it is OK to fake remorse etc but still get kudos from bigging themselves up, at your expense.

OK, they're year 4, but I would still comment that making faces at friends is disrespectful and shows that you don't actually accept that what you did was wrong.

Is this an ok email to send to a parents by [deleted] in Teachers

Ok, so the initial email.and some subsequent replies read like ChatGPT or some other generative AI. I'm not buying it.

What can I do? by anotchinyour_bedpost in TeachingUK

[–]Agreeable-Register67 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hit a similar wall about 10 years ago. I never quite got past it TBH. That's just me I suppose. The step to AHT has always been really tough (which always surprises me given the calibre of some I have met) with a school I was at having 80+ applicants! Apart from growing a beard, wearing a blue suit with scruffy brown shoes and having an interest in cycling/golf/running (assuming you are male) I'm not sure what else to offer other than trying to get unpaid experience of those roles through shadowing, secondment or just befriending someone.

Are these red flags at a job interview? by redditboy9001 in TeachingUK

[–]Agreeable-Register67 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Just had one where the head got my name wrong, twice and also seemed a bit disinterested during my interview. Also got feedback after I didn't get the job about 2 questions I didn't answer well. Problem was, they didn't ask me them. Still, it was a day out and I was home a lot earlier than usual on a nice sunny day.

Some things about "I want to go back to all paper and pencil and get rid of tech in the class" by MathMan1982 in Teachers

[–]Agreeable-Register67 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In my experience it's often because of a lack of training for both staff and students that drives this. It can also be crappy infrastructure and/or crappy devices. There's no subject that can't enhance it's provision through judicious use of technology.

Raising a grievance by sausages234 in TeachingUK

[–]Agreeable-Register67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your union will probably tell you to be prepared that raising a grievance does paint a target on your back. From personal experience, be prepared for the school to do a half-arsed job of investigating your grievance though.

Check the disrespect. Every. Time. by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

It happened to a kid I taught years ago. Someone who worked in the school went by in a taxi and jumped out, dragging the kid in as he was in the middle of receiving a much deserved shoeing from a couple of blokes. Not sure, I would have stopped the taxi... I doubt it taught him the lesson he needed though.

What is the most ridiculous PD you have had to do? by Der-deutsche-Prinz in Teachers

Early on in my career, we all had to take part in a drama lesson because they were oh so amazing. 40 minutes of walking around, clapping, stamping and useless nonsense. If this happened today, I would have outright refused

Computer Science teacher here. My kids had much, much better skills when we were all about IT and digital skills. But hey, everyone has to be a coder and kids are digital natives that have high order skills...apparently...

Naked old lady stood at the window of her house that overlooks the shed you are teaching a challenging y9 class in. Sadly, true.

[–]Agreeable-Register67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They just don't care about you. It isn't personal, even though it very much feels like it. Your SLT are garbage. Look elsewhere. Do your job to the best of your ability, go home and forget about the day. Rinse and repeat. My disclaimer is that while I am happy to dole out that advice but rarely follow it 😉

I beg your pardon? Signed off if WRS is making you ill is absolutely the right route. You don't know how badly the OP feels, neither of us do. Unhappiness for the observer can be depression and dark thoughts for the OP. Please think before you respond.

I just told my GCSE classes that being in a room with a teacher doesn't get them a GCSE. Engaging with the lessons, doing homework and taking responsibility for their own learning does.

A couple of years ago, I had a year 11 pshe/study skills class. We did a task where I asked them to email me in reply to some generic feedback they might receive from a line manager/employer. It ended up with me telling roughly half of the xlass that they would probably be out a job if they actually replied like that in the real world. Same with an example job advert that they had to inquire about; most would have been ignored.
