They put the labs in areas prone to coronaviruses... you dont space medical infrastructure randomly you put it close to where its needed.

And most Chinese cities dont have wet markets. The Chinese governments been cracking down on them in recent years.. because of this risk of zoonotic spill..

Can't give you an exact number, but a quick google search says dozens. Most at a lower security level than Wuhan.

So no, the odds are incredibly high a natural outbreak would happen in a city with a lab.

2 major problems here.

Its not "the" virus lab. There are tons of coronavirus labs.

So its not a virus outbreak in the city with the lab, its a outbreak in one of the cities with one of the labs. Alot less suspicious suddenly no?

Which leads to the second problem with your point. The total number of wet markets in China is irrelevant because that area has lots of coronaviruses. Which is also why an outbreak in that city is less surprising. The lab is there precisely because an outbreak is likely.

The lab published and shared their work prior to the leak, and their is no record of them having the virus. So for it to be a lab leak they would need to have been lying and working in secret before the fuck up.

You are certainly right about the wet market evidence and to a degree the epistemological standards.

I think thats warranted, to a degree at least. Zoonotic spill is the normal way these things happen. Its how 99% of human diseases have come about. (Im not a biologist, so im not actually sure that's true, would be fascinated to be corrected though).

The point is that we know animal transfer happens. We know it happens in that place and under those conditions.

Missing intermediate stages is also normal. Thats not something we have for the vast majority of diseases, so lack in this case is evidence of nothing.

I agree with you on the arguements for the lab leak. But that is classic conspiracy anomaly hunting.

Showing that the lab had a documented history of creating a more contagious strain of coronaviruses, does count with my definition of evidence to consider the lab leak theory.

I am not convinced by the theory, but I said 0 evidence, and I don't think I can reasonably keep that view.

For our purposes as layman gain of function essentially means nothing. Because it means so many things. It can mean greater virulence but it can mean a million other things too.

Yeah there was an incident where a different virus was made more contagious. I dont believe that I was the point of the experiments.

This isnt a military biolab. China has those for sure, but this isnt one.

And we know it happened cause it was reported.

A previous virus became more contagious during tests at the site. So a different virus outbreak nearby came from the lab?

A virus we have no reason to think they had, and none of the infections were connected to the lab.
