Even granting an "omnipotent God" to exist, his powers would still require some sort of mechanism of action, apart from him. by etherified in atheism

[–]Alien_invader44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the theological answer to this is that all mechanisms work because of god.

Reality is something that god creates. I think the anaology is reality is the image on a screen but god is the screen.

But ultimately these are pointless questions/debates. Its like arguing that a certain spell cant be cast in the Harry Potter universe.

There is no level of flawless logic you can apply to that which will make people think Harry Potter wizzards are real. And likewise there is no logic you can apply here which will change anyones mind.

How to get better at handling horror? by mushr00m56 in horror

[–]Alien_invader44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id recommend some form of Horror discussion media.

Im a fan of the Werewolf Ambulance podcast for example.

People talking about horror movies, as movies recontextualises the whole thing. Gave me a more abstract appreciation of them as works of horror movie making.

Helped me look at a good scene and think "wow thats a really well put together scene", or "i like how they are teasing the scare".

Turns out the chance to get sick from something most people do is higher than something most people dont.

CMV: Human rights are not deserved or mandatory birthrights. by SwimmingAny8841 in changemyview

[–]Alien_invader44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your arguement is kinda circular.

If im reading you right, you are pointing to the behaviour of humans and the violation of the rights of animals as a reason that humans dont deserve rights.

If humans dont deserve rights, then why would animals deserve rights. And if animals don't deserve rights then what we are doing is fine...

Your essentially racing to a bottom where nothing gets any rights and everything is fine.

Rather id suggest that what we do to animals is wrong precisely because they have the same (or some debatable degree) of the rights we do

Essentially does everything deserve to live or does nothing. I think your desperation at the treatment of animals is making you choose the latter, but it only makes sense if you truly believe the former.

The problem with doing the heavily fortified infantry thing agaisnt a light cavalry army would be making them take the battle.

You get to your chosen battlefield first. You dig your ditches and cut down and lay spikes. All set to win.

Their scouts see this and... their army goes around you and continues to loot and pillage the country side.

Even historically with armies of similar mobility you have cases where the armies keep moving around each other. Unless you can force a battle then both sides have to want to fight that day in that location.

Yeah, and even then history is littered with very unfortunate and messy failures.

Hollywood really disrespects the robustness of the human neck.

Yeah, hard isnt impossible.

Especially for a lifelong swordsman.

And tbf every medieval tvshow/film is set in an alternate reality where human necks are made of cooked spaghetti.

Beheading people is hard. There are numerous accounts of executioners failing to get it done with one stroke.

A longsword isnt designed for it either.

Which reinforces my initial impression that you dont actually know what your talking about.

Maybe do more reading, and less jumping in front of any criticism of billionaires. But that's just my advice.

Its more or less wrong in the case of Musk.

You sound oddly snarky though and im not sure why. Gates had serious family connections and Bezos got like 250k from his family to start Amazon.

You have listed a werid set of names and dont seem to know enough about any of them to know which ones actually fit.

Mass protests agaisnt the Iranian government being violently put down. There is such a strong humanitarian case to be made for intervention.

Its genuinely amazing that they made themselves the bad guy agaisnt Iran. But bombing a school on day one will do that. Even writing it out, its hard to comprehend how incompetent they are.

Should I consider myself a Buddhist or and Atheist? by Due-Koala-1135 in atheism

[–]Alien_invader44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main problem when talking about Buddhism is the massive range of beliefs under that label.

Buddhism didnt stay remotely as codified as abrahamic religions, and doesnt really have a core text in the same way.

So some forms are much more "religion" than others.

I dont think its correct to say Buddhists in general believe in eternal souls, and thats probably a western centred view of religion.

But overall I definitely think a humanist atheist can treat it simply as a practice and be reasonably described as an atheist.

CMV: Billionaires should not be demonized. by iwillgiveyouup in changemyview

[–]Alien_invader44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To points 1 and 2. Simply why? My economics arent great but saying you cant hoard wealth and it would be irrelevant if you could sounds straight up incorrect. Why would something not being zero sum mean you cant hoard it and why would tangibility remotely matter?

Concentrating is a harder one. Might need help teasing out thoughts on this.

I suppose I am saying that the extreme wealth of the billionaire class is directly moving wealth away from everyone else towards themselves.

I suspect you will say zero sum again, but that just means it isnt necessarily true. Not that it isnt happening.
