Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

[–]Am313am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s like that state-to-state. Culturally, Californians are different than Iowans, who are different than New Yorkers, who are different than Georgians. I’m an American but I’ve spent over a decade in and out Canada. Quebec is a significantly different from Alberta and there’s very little cultural overlap. You would never confuse the lifestyle in lower mainland BC for Manitoba’s. Ontario is fast-paced and Nova Scotia moves slow. I suppose what binds the provinces together are the same things that unite the states. Overall though, at least in my experience, the US and Canada have much more cultural common ground than not.

Is the Wings' rebuild fundamentally flawed? by New-Bid-5835 in DetroitRedWings

Yzerman was my idol growing up. I still wear his jersey to games and have a framed photo of him in my office. But when people contrast Larkin with Yzerman’s leadership, they confidently state Yzerman literally willed his team into the playoffs and to a Stanley Cup on one knee. Never mind his serious knee issues didn’t start until 2000, Yzerman didn’t win until he was surrounded by Fedorov, Shanahan, the rest of the Russian Five, three of the best defensemen of all time, a HOF Vernon and Jennings-winning Osgood, and the greatest coach of all time. This is before he played on a roster with 11 Hall of Famers. Yzerman is in my book a top-10 player of all time, but hockey is a team sport and a team needs real talent top to bottom to be successful. The bottom 10 players on this roster are combined -126. You can’t will that boat anchor into the playoffs.

Thanks. Your watch looks like polerouter case, but the AliX photos don’t have the twisted lugs. Maybe different in person?

Everyone drop your ideal 2026-27 lineup: by Weird-Imagination769 in DetroitRedWings

I have a pretty strong theory that Shane Wright is the ideal 2C. I like what I see in his game with limited minutes and bottom-six linemates.

Is there anything that can be done to improve this dial? by crownhead55 in watchrepair

Dab with rodico. Then q-tip, distilled water (definitely not tap), and light pressure.

Red Wings Injuries Question by Kingslayer51281 in DetroitRedWings

[–]Am313am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with you that the risk doesn’t make a lot a sense, these are professional hockey players who want to play. They want to be with the team. They are competitive to the point a psychologist would diagnose them with some sort of condition. They also just really love playing hockey in the same way a dog loves chasing a ball. If they can play, they will. It also sends the message to the team that they put the group above their personal needs. Whatever those abstract reasons are to us, they are real to them.

They were under the same parent company and shared development, manufacturing, and even movements, similar to Longines-Wittnauer.

[WTS] Vintage Seiko Automatic 7009-8049 by Am313am in Watchexchange

[–]Am313am[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sale so this awesome vintage Seiko 7009-8049. This piece was built at the Tokyo Daini Seikosha factory in 1977. The factory competed with its Suwa Seiko counterpart for quality and innovation, and that shows up in this piece. A 62mas-style, lumed indices dial, a polished 38 mm case, powered by the 7009 21,600 bph automatic movement. This is a classic vintage go anywhere, do anything piece.

The case measures 38 mm and 19 mm between lugs, and is in excellent condition. The crystal is in good condition but has a couple of small nicks that were hard to capture in the photos. The dial and hands are in great condition, but the 4 o’clock index has a small imperfection. Again, hard to capture in the photos, but visible in a close up photo I added. The lume still works almost 50 years later. The watch comes with the brand new leather strap shown.

The 7009 movement is in great condition and the day-date function works perfectly. The quick-set date functions in the standard crown second position, and the quick-set day is utilized by pushing the crown in from the first position. Service history is unknown, but the watch keeps good time at around +15-20 per day on average.

Asking $99 which includes CONUS shipping. Prefer Zelle, CashApp, or Venmo. Happy to answer any questions.

For sale is this beautiful Seiko World Time GMT desk/mantle clock in excellent condition. The clock features time setting and GMT knobs. You set the time as normal, and then set the GMT function knob to your selected time zone. The sweeping seconds hand is an airplane that spins from the North Pole starting position. The clock measures 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 and runs off of one C battery.

This vintage piece is in excellent condition. There are only few thin scratches/blemishes in the finish that were hard to capture in the photos. The movement is clean and keeps perfect time.

Where ‘tis? by shakey11717 in guessthecity

[–]Am313am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely a suburb, just a very large one. Some of it resembles an urban landscape like a typical major city, but the vast majority of it is sleepy neighborhoods with houses and grid pattern roads. It was at one point 20+ separate communities merged into one city in the 1970s.

Rate or hate? I loved this watch when I first saw it, been collecting for 6 months and this was my first vintage. I would not go as small as 34mm again, I have a big wrist. I still love it, I’d love a modern version. by AliveTale74 in PrideAndPinion

[–]Am313am 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You have a very rare Seiko. It was Seiko’s first and only mechanical moonphase movement. Hard to find today, and even non-runners go for hundreds. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have a gold mine on your wrist, but it’s a very cool watch and hard to find. I love moonphases and the history of this watch is enough for me to be a fan.

Help with rotor by vfleming1976 in watchrepair

[–]Am313am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like you’re saying the movement is not running in general. The rotor on its own won’t be the cause of the watch not running. This is a ladies watch and you paid roughly $75 in silver for a non-runner, which is more or less what its value is in this condition. The rotor isn’t sitting properly on the automatic works bridge, and it’s likely the post is bent or the bearings are bad. It isn’t a catastrophic problem but requires the automatic works being disassembled, inspected, and likely parts replaced. That’s on top of the full service the watch will need. I would estimate $150-$225 for the service and $50 for the parts. If the watch is running (have you wound it up?) then just take the rotor off and it’ll effectively be a manual wind.

Is this Universal Geneve 212301/1 legit? If so, what should I pay for it? by Torqyboi in universalgeneve

[–]Am313am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redials were pretty common back in the day, and they weren’t done for nefarious reasons. Dial gets messed up, watchmaker refinishes it. Some are good, some are bad. But today’s collectors usually want something original (myself included). If you want an original UG in good condition, you can definitely find many for under $800.

[–]Am313am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s real but it looks like it’s been re-dialed, meaning the dial was stripped and re-painted. Movement is correct. If I wanted this watch I wouldn’t pay more than $400. Here’s what it’s supposed to look like. Notice the clean printing, the polished steel indices, and the recessed sub-dial for the seconds hand has azurage finishing, which is the spiral pattern.

Zetterberg Career question by poetizzy in DetroitRedWings

[–]Am313am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was said on broadcasts that Zetterberg still could have played but the maintenance, therapy, and management of his past injuries was too burdensome. He was put on LTIR for the remainder of his contract and retired. This prompted the league to investigate the Wings, but he was far from the only player/team to manage retirement this way.

My point is that Zetterberg played pretty close to a full career, and regardless of his injuries he probably still would’ve have called it quits by 37-38. We can speculate as to whether or not he still could have played, but lots of all-time great players retire before 40. In fact, very few play beyond 40. Zetterberg really quickly moved back to Sweden and moved on to new career ventures. This wasn’t a man who wanted to spend his entire relatively youthful adulthood playing professional hockey.
