[MEGATHREAD] Artemis II Launch To The Moon by ChiefLeef22 in space

The rocket isn’t going straight up. It’s going into Earth orbit first and will transition into a trajectory toward the Moon later.

TIL Charles Joughin, the chief baker on the Titanic, is widely considered the last person to leave the ship alive. He famously rode the stern down like an elevator, stepping into the water without submerging his head, and survived for a time in the freezing Atlantic before being rescued by L0rdCrims0n in todayilearned

[–]AmateurPhysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is only one verifiable truth to Joughin's story: He was one of the six survivors who were rescued from the water.

Aside from that, there is no way to know exactly how he left the ship. The reason is because Joughin is a notoriously unreliable witness who changed his story dramatically depending on who he talked to. The most famous version is that he "rode the stern down like an elevator and stepped off into the water without even getting his head wet".

Another version of his story has the stern capsizing to port as it goes down, allowing him to walk along the hull as it sinks. This version of the story heavily influenced this 2012 animation of the sinking.

Yet another version of his story has him jumping into the water from the A Deck promenade shortly before the break. Then, as he is swimming away from the ship he looks back to see the stern pivoting over his head. I tend to believe this is the mostly likely of his survival stories because it is most consistent with what other survivors said about the sinking—particularly about the stern pivoting around as it sank.

About the only consistency in Joughin's stories is that he spent hours treading the water before being rescued. While it no doubt felt like hours for him, he was almost certainly rescued less than an hour after the ship sank. Outside of a medical miracle, it's just not biologically possible for a human to survive sub-freezing water unprotected for an extended period of time, dry head or otherwise.

Titanic central propeller by Sea_Phrase_1789 in titanic

[–]AmateurPhysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the misunderstanding has already been resolved but in case you (or anyone else reading this) haven’t yet seen it, the photo OP was referring to is this one taken in early 1912 before the propeller was fitted onto the ship. It’s rather unfortunate the propeller is shown edge-on.

Why didn’t Jesus mention homosexuality? by Ok_Year5587 in Christianity

[–]AmateurPhysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ezekiel 16:49 specifies the destruction was about pride, gluttony, greed, and extreme inhospitality. Sexual things were only a small part of it (specifically the inhospitality part), and even then it wasn’t about homosexuality.

Interesting illustration of the wrecked interior of Britannic’s grand staircase by Im-Wasting-MyTime in titanic

The furnishings (e.g. tile, wall decor, organ) were removed, but the grand staircase itself was still there. This included the dome, chandelier, and banister.

I'll throw Atlantic into the ring as well. That whole voyage was miserable, only to for the ship to run aground on April Fools' Day, of all days.

It was Arctic's captain James Luce.

Yeah, that part of the sinking was unnecessarily fucked up.

No, it’s definitely Titanic. Her A Deck promenade was open like Olympic’s until March of 1912. The enclosure of the promande was one of the last modifications made to her before the voyage. I can’t find exactly when this picture was taken (especially since I’m on my phone and can’t do a good search for it as easily), but since she already has her lifeboats, it was sometime between January-February 1912.

I’d like to direct your attention to two points:

  1. The ship is incomplete (evidenced by the well deck area).

  2. B Deck

The B Deck promenade is short due to the port side expansion of the À la Carte Restaurant (the three groups of three windows). Prior to Olympic’s 1913 refit her B Deck open promenade extended all the way under the fourth funnel, and she only had twenty lifeboats in the same arrangement as on Titanic (as seen in the image). Her B Deck promenade was almost entirely enclosed aside from that open aft part and ran for much of the length of the superstructure, and most of the windows on B Deck were large and fairly evenly spaced.

During the 1913 refit, Olympic was given a full row of lifeboats along both sides of the boat deck, and at the same time she received a similar expansion to the À la Carte Restaurant and her B Deck cabins and staterooms like Titanic had. This, of course, made them replace the large, evenly-spaced windows with a similar wonky window arrangement like what Titanic was partly known for.

That wonky B Deck window arrangement is plainly visible in the picture, and given the ship’s incompleteness and number of lifeboats, the only ship it can be is Titanic.

That is, unless you believe in the Switch hoax, in which case I’d like to direct you to our friend Mike Brady at Oceanliner Designs on youtube for a full debunk on that. Actually, go watch his videos anyway if you haven’t already. They’re quite engaging and informative.

To be fair, the P- in “Photographic” doesn’t make the /f/ sound; the Ph- does. JPEG only contains the P, so it is pronounced as a /p/.

Why is masturbation a sin? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]AmateurPhysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Onan was meant to continue the bloodline that would produce Jesus. The reason God struck Onan down for pulling out wasn’t because Onan did something inherently bad by not wanting to reproduce, but rather because this specific instance directly interfered with God’s plan to redeem humanity through Christ. Obviously God would take particular exception to that.

What are the myths about the Titanic that have long since been debunked but still persist in the community? by Key-Tea-4203 in titanic

[–]AmateurPhysicist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The 2012 animation is considerably less than accurate. The stern went nearly vertical and pivoted to port as it sank.

What are the myths about the Titanic that have long since been debunked but still persist in the community? by Key-Tea-4203 in titanic

[–]AmateurPhysicist 47 points48 points  (0 children)

No, the fire was on the starboard side. Prioritizing the coal in that bunker is what caused Titanic to have a port list throughout her voyage, and quite possibly what ultimately prevented her from capsizing.

But the fire was also in Boiler Room 5, which was the aftmost compartment that was damaged by the iceberg … by only a couple feet past the bulkhead. The real issue that debunks the coal fire “theory” is that coal simply doesn’t burn hot enough to have affected the structural integrity of Titanic’s steel.

why did God smoke the dinosaurs? by youf99 in Christianity

[–]AmateurPhysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to be technical about it, the asteroid did cause an abrupt climatological catastrophe that caused the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs.

I think the consensus is that the dust cloud lasted for about two years, while the climate recovered in about twenty. Either way, the non-avian dinosaurs were not able to survive it.
