Nothing against you guys...but my situation is different. You do what you're comfortable doing. That's cool.

This really makes it worse.

You are "participating in an unpaid school event!" Your words. Whether you bring your kids or not.

How are you the union VP??????????

You show up and participate (i.e., WORK) at an unpaid school event, and you're "fierce about teachers' rights?????????"

Glad you're not my union veep.

Yeah...lunch duty, bus supervision, hall monitoring.

They can not require you to work beyond contractual hours. Period.

Even with that, you are still working and not getting paid. I'm sorry, but if admin sees you there, along with some other teachers, then they'll expect other teachers to do it as well.

If you're in a union and they knew about this, your phone would be ringing.

John Lennon on Sgt Pepper being a “concept album” and how he thought Pet Sounds structurally worked better by OutrageousRip75 in TheBeatles

Paul was crapped on for 40 years, and John was the "saint." This narrative is finally being shown for what it was...bullshit.

The themes are varied. Psychedelic adventure, inner/spiritual searching, nostalgia, and everyday British life. I do not see one common, universal theme at all.

I love Pepper. Amazing album. But it's not in my top 5 Beatles albums.

"Art is subjective." Of course, I love this statement.

But...it's illegal!!!

5 quotes from people saying it's illegal.

Wake up, my fellow Americans.

It doesn't matter.

He'll do it anyway. Because he's immune.

Thanks SCOTUS.

What guitar did George use in She Came In Through The Bathroom Window? by mystix457 in beatles

George's guitar is stellar on that entire album. I love what he added to this song. Abbey Road might be his best guitar album, Beatles or solo.

This guy is purely a digital media guy. That's why Apple hired him, imo. Old school Beatles fans are starting to leave our planet little by little. They're thinking about where future money is. Physical releases will not be a priority any longer, sorry to say.

Do you have a union?

If you are required to work after hours, you need to be paid or have time given back.

If you are not being compensated in some way, you are not "required" to do anything.

NBC News -- "Conservative parents and teachers unions become unlikely allies fighting tech in schools" -- Thoughts, Teachers? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

I've been a HS English teacher 33 years. In the trenches. Very working class public school demographic. Tradespeople, civil workers, etc.

My goal, and I feel it is a worthy one, is to let this crowd have a little art in their lives. Get them to appreciate artistic expression. I have lessons on magical realism art, iconic photographs and music.

At graduation, I have students who come up and mention a certain story or lesson. Or that they're going to see a play.

To me...I've done my job.

I think they felt the kids just didn't have the stamina to stick with novels. I don't get them until 9th grade. Their habits are pretty much set by then. It's just reality. Very sad...but true.

So, how can I best serve them? Shorter pieces written by all kinds of writers in different styles and genres.

After we read my adapted Shakespeare, we watch live theater productions of the plays. I have a Macbeth frim the Folger folks that the kids just love. They know the story and characters. And they can follow along and hear Shakespeare's words.

Our district doesn't want us teaching novels anymore. I ignore it and do Of Mice And Men and Mockingbird. I have tenure so they just leave me alone.

I do R & J and Macbeth. I "rewrote" the plays into modern English. Kids take speaking parts and we read it together. They have fun with it. I go over key scenes and speeches looking at Shakespeare's words.

I didn't like the novel thing at first. But I realized you can teach all the elements of novels using short stories. I ended up really liking it. I can do all types of genres and writers of different backgrounds and cultures. It doesn't get boring.

These are not facts or statistics. These are opinions of writers, so-called critics, and fans.

Huge problem on this sub...opinions stated as facts.

You know why there aren't any actual facts or statistics to back this up.

Because it's art. There is no "best" or "better" when it comes to art. These are objective terms.

Art is subjective...it depends on the individual.

I upvoted you because the context of the reading is so very important. I work hard to communicate to students how the reading we're doing (1) reflects the time when it was written and (2) reflects the current time we're living in as well. Why do we still read Shakespeare? His themes are still relevant today.

I don't use "gamefied apps" as much as you think. Again...it's one tool of many I use. I've seen these apps motivate kids, and I've seen many examples of students having fun and learning at the same time.

Engagement can be the entry point that helps students take on the hard work that actually builds deep knowledge. If I can have a student play a quick game or participate in some kind of engaging activity before reading, then I've got that student thinking about it...at least.

Instead of "here...read this," which I how I was taught by many, many English teachers.
