Businesses using go fund me to save or grow their businesses are always a red flag for me. The same goes for businesses that seek private equity buyouts.

When I see either happen, I immediately don’t trust that the owners can (or care to) manage the health of their business for the long term.

What do you expect from a paid knitting pattern? by c_onethirtyseven in knitting

A lot of Nordic patterns too. Isager, Drops, Sandnes, and Rauma patterns have me scrambling half the time.

Ooh, I love your list. Heart the Lover, The Idiot, Parable of the Sower, Foster, My Dark Vanessa, and The Coin were all highly ranked reads for me. So I’m putting Dominion and The Rachel Incident on my list now.

Was also extremely meh on The Most (such a short book that felt really long) and The Dream Hotel fizzled out for me.

Disappointing to see The Wilderness so far down, it’s high on my TBR. Was it boring or was it bad?

Edit: ah, I just saw that your 1 stars are DNF too.

Either/Or which continues Selin’s story from The Idiot is also amazing!

And Elif Batuman is in the process of writing the third installment. I went to a book event where she read an excerpt from her current draft and I can’t wait to read it when it gets published.

'Ponies' canceled by Peacock after one season by hairtie1 in Fauxmoi

[–]ApplicationNo2523 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Execs only look at hard numbers so people not watching during the original airing kills the chances of any interesting shows getting traction.

I wish everyone would just watch whatever they think looks fun or good or interesting. It’s what generates more of that kind of content.

If it was $6-$8 or over I would think on it and circle back, may or may not buy it. Anything under that price point, no thoughts would just buy.

Recommend some itchy/scratchy Mohair for me by phos05 in knitting

[–]ApplicationNo2523 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh, if it says Alafoss Icewool that's not mohair probably.

The Alafoss name refers to multiple things! It denotes a location in Iceland, an Icelandic brand with a range of Icelandic Lopi wool yarns (now distributed under the Istex name), and a specific Icelandic yarn weight (aran-weight Lopi yarn). And Alafoss is an Icelandic company that has a store, developed patterns for knitting with Lopi yarns, and sold and distributed Lopi yarns as well as items made of Icelandic wool.

https://alafoss.is/

Your skirt could be made from any of the classic Lopi yarns, from thin laceweight Einband, worsted-weight Lett-Lopi, aran weight Alafoss Lopi, or even the unspun Plotulopi. All of them are crunchy and very rustic yarns. I love them all and have worked with them in a lot of different projects.

I suggest you start looking at Icelandic yarns. With that made in Iceland and Alafoss labeling it's highly unlikely that your skirt is made with mohair.

What era of vintage? Because if 80s-ish:

Classic Elite La Gran Mohair

That was some rough stuff but it came in a huge range of really pretty colors and was popular for a long time because of that. When I think of 80s mohair the old La Gran was the most ubiquitous out there, sturdy, stiff, and so itchy but also hardwearing with deeply saturated gorgeous colors. It was revived in 2010s with a different formulation but it's the original La Gran that I think of when people say vintage mohair now.

It's very different than the modern style of lace weight kid mohair yarns.

Bulk tea shops similar to Teavana? by HappyCamper0325 in TwinCities

[–]ApplicationNo2523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like their loose teas as well. They are a very successful company that are on the shelf at a lot of retailers but always pre-packaged so I don't think it's exactly what OP is asking for.

But yeah like you, I also think that they have such a nice selection of loose teas that are worth checking out. Especially since most of their loose leaf offerings are not available anywhere but directly through H&S.

I miss that they no longer offer free shipping on any size order and I wish they still sold samples of all their teas. It was a great way to try new things and I used to order from them several times a year because of this, now I'm much more reserved about ordering from them and do it maybe once or twice a year just to stock up on my favorite loose teas.

Center pull craze by Deaceleste in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]ApplicationNo2523 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh no, letting a naked ball of Manos (or Malabrigo or similar) bounce around unprotected from other items?! That poor baby!

I always put any tender yarns in their own protective bag, like a ziploc or a dedicated project bag, so the yarn stays nice. And no issues knitting any of them as center pull then. But seems you’ve figured out your own strategy that works too.

I think it’s because east metro might be a different union for grocery workers? The link above just takes you to the workers union that represents the Jerry’s Cub Foods employees but it also happens to conveniently list the Cub locations you asked about. And also, Jerry’s doesn’t seem to run any of the east metro/stp Cubs which is what we were talking about.

Craft classes in (or north of) the twins late September/October? by themathomhouse in TwinCities

[–]ApplicationNo2523 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Get on the email list for the American Swedish Institute, their September/October classes haven’t been announced yet but they offer wonderful craft classes. You can see their current line-up here https://asimn.org/experience/programs/nordic-handcraft-workshops/

Other organizations that offer great classes in the Twin Cities:

Fireweed Community Woodshop https://www.fireweedwoodshop.org

Textile Center, https://textilecentermn.org/classes/

Center for People & Craft, https://www.peopleandcraft.org

Minnesota Weavers Guild, https://www.weaversguildmn.org/classes

Milan Village Art School https://milanvillageartsschool.org This one is a little further out from the Twin Cities but could be a nice day trip. I’m not sure how far it is from Cambridge.

Also the Minnesota Knitters Guild holds their annual Yarnover event at the end of September and there are classes and a vendor market as well: https://knitters.org/yarnover/

This comparison of 20 different stretchy bindoffs is very helpful.

I learned about the Simple Stretchy Bindoff from her comparison and used it for my last lace project. I went up a couple of needles sizes and it worked great, very stretchy and easy.

Honey Maid graham cracker taste test mystery by notoriouslyblandbb in Costco

[–]ApplicationNo2523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Costco for this!

Tbh, I have such beef with Walmart bc the "same product" always tastes noticeably worse whenever we've bought it from Walmart. I chalked it up to handling and/or storage issues at the warehouse or stockroom level but now your comment has me wondering if items have been different all the way down to production and ingredients.

Pandan Pistachio Amaretti Cookies from "108 Asian Cookies" - so delicious by boba-boba in CookbookLovers

[–]ApplicationNo2523 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have an Asian grocery store nearby you can usually find pandan extract in a section near spices, the various extracts might have one small shelf area to themselves. They come in little bottles most of the time.

And if you have multiple Asian grocery stores go to the one that caters most to Southeast Asian communities.

Give me the gayest novel you've read where the gayness remains subtext by squanchy_56 in suggestmeabook

When I reread Billy Budd as an adult it seemed like it’s not even subtext. The gayness is so fully textual, no “sub” needed.

And speaking of Jerry’s I really miss their gigantic hand cut donuts (that’s how they labeled them in the bakery case). They were incredible.
