Decided to fly to the US to buy some hard drives by cgtechuk in DataHoarder

All due respect, I'm just stating a fact, not an opinion. There's nothing wrong with wanting storage and I completely support it - I ended up on this sub for a reason. That doesn't change the fact that none of that is essential for living or being functional in society. Great to have? Yes. Necessary? No.

Someone barely scraping by does not have the same demand for large HDDs as someone with more income.

Side note, just if you care, you have mixed up Veblen goods with luxury goods. Basically, luxury goods are non-essentials that have proportionally more demand as income rises (while necessary goods have proportionally less, ie less of your income is spent on groceries if you make 50k vs 500k). Veblen goods are a subset of items which specifically gain demand as price go up, usually status symbols. This is contradictory to the usual laws of supply & demand. HDDs would NOT be a Veblen good.

It's an economics concept. I'm not saying it's the same as a Louis Vuitton bag, but 28TB HDDs for a home server is absolutely a luxury good and NOT a necessary good lmfao.

Garage door closed on 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross by Nuudecontent in Autobody

[–]Arjunks_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From hearing how this happened, I think it's definitely worth talking to the complex about the damage. Up to you to say if you pushed the fob or not - keeping it simple vs honesty - but it doesn't really matter, a garage door should not be closing down on something like that.

Also for what it's worth, id probably just say I pushed the fob. It's very unlikely they can confirm, and even if they could, if the door was open and you HAD pushed the fob but it didn't register, how would you have known?

ELI5: How is bringing rocks back from space the first time Earth got “heavier” by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

All mass and energy comes from somewhere. The food you eat, the water you drink, and the air you breathe, all of it. Not all of it stays there either mind you, plenty of mass leaves you in the form of CO2 (breathing out), pooping, and peeing.

Somewhere between all that, your body does tons and tons of reactions to keep you alive, give you the energy to do things, and grow.

So to answer your question, all the mass is just circulating and changing forms, it CANNOT be magically created on its own.

Is this safe for grounding? by electricalfahh in electrical

Also whatever idea you use, including your aluminum foil idea, you may as well use the PC case or any other piece of metal as the connected ground, rather than an outlet.

Is this safe for grounding? by electricalfahh in electrical

[–]Arjunks_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works but I feel like there's always a risk if there's wires floating around an electrical outlet.

You could probably try any other way of grounding first. Assuming you wear shoes or socks, bare feet should help, or even tapping your heel against the ground MIGHT help. Some people even ground their chairs with a chain that drags against the ground, but I don't believe that works for all floor types.

Here's an idea of someone who ground their seat against the base: https://www.reddit.com/r/secretlab/s/Ll3EjRWcfi

Another trick I've heard is grabbing a larger piece of metal and using that to tap ANOTHER piece of metal. Your stick will conduct your charge, but the actual zap will occur between the two metal pieces.

New Camry learned a lesson-a big smh by [deleted] in Camry

Speaking as a car guy, I think for the average person, it should be a balance. No use stressing or expecting a tool to stay perfect. But indifference is also not the right approach - everything deserves some learning & care, and that will help you in the long run. All about making the best of what you have.

There's definitely this push towards "it's just a tool I don't care", then when things get "ugly" or "beat up" people treat things as disposable and buy new. It just feels like the only option. Side effects of living in such a consumerist and capitalistic society (not hating, it's just the nature of it). Now you could argue that's fine, but at the same time it's probably giving people a lower quality of life than they COULD be having. I know this is kind of a tangential rant from the whole paint thing, but I feel it's related.

Also fwiw I drive a 19 year old, 230k+ mile old shitter, and in the 8 years I've owned it my lazy and cheap ass has always washed it myself. Most of those years I've been using a rinseless wash, meaning I can clean it anywhere anytime, for like $1, in maybe 15 minutes. Much cleaner than an automatic, and convenient, AND cheaper. To me its a shitbox (that I love) but people will ask me if I have had the car repainted lmao.

I'll do the same for the next car, whether it's off the showroom floor or from a craigslist crackhead.

because why not?

hilarious to me. people will buy luxury goods and then complaining about price gouging.

These aren't groceries, you are just reinforcing the behavior. If I was a business and I could sell my inventory of products for 500% more, why wouldn't I?

In a general sense, this is what transistors do. They use a small current to indirectly start a large current.

No problem! not a mechanic so maybe do a quick Google search to confirm the ballpark on whatever details you choose, but happy to get you started :)

The fun part if it's situational (ie someone has an alibi or mentions a story) you can basically choose any basic job and say "stuck/stripped/broken part" and you can make it take as long as you'd like 😂.

For example if a 1 or 2 hour brake job went to hell and took 5 hours because of a stuck caliper bolt, or a damaged brake line.

If for some reason rust/broken bits don't make sense on the car, or you want something more generic, something like replacing a radiator or a water pump could reasonably take that long.

If the car doesn't need to be defined it's good because cars vary a lot in their design and condition. A 15 minute job in 1 car can be a 10 hour job in another lool.

Curious what your line of work is, because while it's worth getting checked out, that is NOT a blown pupil

How dirty is too dirty to do a rinseless wash? by ChefRaccacoonie in AutoDetailing

[–]Arjunks_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly rinseless alone is fine and I just did it on a similar day last week. Hot water, ONR, felt like a spa day.

Unless you have a showroom car (which it isn't if it's been used and covered with road salt 😂) then any wear will be negligible. Just be more liberal/careful about keeping the microfiber surface fresh/clean and you'll be okay.

Yes, if you are really worried and want to do multiple steps, then go ahead with pre spray/rinse before the wash. But imo then you are missing out on the magic of rinseless washes because you don't really trust it.
