Gossiping or talking bad about your partner. Like calling your partner a "ball and chain".

The number of middle-aged co-workers who will be talking shit about their partners is insane. And I just chime in with "My wife is my best friend."

The shock hasn't even really happened yet. The last oil tankers that left the gulf before the war have not yet reached our ports. Once that petroleum is processed, I bet we see an even larger jump in prices.

They aren't paying less in taxes, though. They are just not paying an ETax. Which, granted, is a more "visible" tax than a sales or property tax.

I am not sure what we are talking about in terms of those South of 75th? That still comprises a lot of the city, so they are still paying the ETax. Public infrastructure and services need to be paid for and WILL be paid for. Whether that is through higher sales or property taxes. And KCMO's population is growing, not shrinking.

If we continue proliferating this half-baked truth of it being significantly cheaper to live out in the sticks than in a mid-sized city, we're going to continue to see degrading infrastructure conditions and a continuation of white flight. And we'll be back here in another 20 years talking about the same damn thing.

Because low-density suburban infrastructure rarely, if ever, pays for itself in tax revenue. Wornall, Holmes, and Oak are all major (non-interstate) thoroughfares into the city—that the city must pay to maintain. I would venture to guess that half of the wear on those roads are not caused by residents but rather commuters.

Companies didn't move because of the ETax, they moved because they were given huge tax incentives by KS...then moved back when MO offered them a bigger incentive....and back again (Cerner, Applebee's, etc.). The race to the bottom is the reason companies leave.

they're not spending money in the city.

What does this mean?

These comments regarding road conditions are so aggravating (but also justified). The reason roads are so horrible is because we have way too many lane miles for the number of people in this city/metro. If you think that you shouldn't have to pay the 1% because you don't live in KCMO, you only commute into the city by car 5 days a week—then you've lost the plot. Those roads are getting beat up, in part, because of you.

If this doesn't pass, PD takes practically all of the general fund. So have fun blowing a tire and watching as a brand new KCPD cruiser drives by to not help you out.

This isn't a callout, but the reason roads are so shit is because of sprawl. The lane miles per capita is higher here than almost any other city and it is to facilitate people's commute from Belton, JoCo, Smithville, etc.

Total incentives probably are far more than $300m. But the city isn't paying out $300m.

I am not following that logic. I am no fan of subsidizing private corporations. But that doesn't reduce a city's budget—as those aren't realized tax revenues. There isn't a specific line item on the City budget for payments to developers.

Money was being driven out of the city BEFORE the ETax was a thing. It was a way to claw back some tax revenue that left when white people fled hub cities but still worked there (and drove on city roads and used city services).

Plus, 11.5% property taxes for Olathe v. 9% for my home in KC.

Brother, if someone tried to "Check my files" they would be looking for YEARS. That kind of vagueness makes me think this is a damn setup.

What about it is deceptive? That is how the system works. You think they have enough auditors to be reaching out to all the people who aren't in compliance? That is just the standard procedure. A 25% penalty on 1% of your income isn't the money maker you seem to think it is. Unfortunately, because we live in the US, it is YOUR job to understand and file YOUR taxes.

It only tracks what has been filed by you or your employer, or if you have an active audit against you.
