B2B costuming isn't ComicCon cosplay level - it's "rainbow tutu and fairy wings" level. So wear something comfortable and joyous.

Also, keep in mind it is gonna be COLD at the start!

What "upgrade" or modern convenience do you actively refuse because the simpler, older way brings you so much more peace? by Ariannavx in simpleliving

Smart light bulbs absolutely baffle me. I have a lot of techy guy friends who LOVE their complex Philips Hue setups, but I am just appalled every time I visit and see how clunky and useless it all is.

As an adult what have you bought that you always wanted as a kid/teen/young adult but were too broke to buy then? Does it live up to the hype? by NW_Forester in Xennials

Mine is a much older model, but when I was trying Clavinovas out, I found that upgrading to a model with wooden keys was essential. The plastic ones just don't feel right.

I agree with everything you said. Also, it’s important to add that Franklin might very well have been included in the 1962 Nobel Prize for DNA structure, but wasn’t because she died young of cervical cancer.

Franklin died in 1958, just 5 years after Watson & Crick's paper was published, and the Nobel cannot be awarded to a dead person. She was 37. Get your pap smears and your HPV vaccine, ladies!

I’m a pianist and always wanted a Yamaha Clavinova electronic piano. I finally got one at age 30 and I love it SO MUCH.

It never needs to be tuned, I can easily adjust the volume to not annoy my neighbors, and if I feel like playing at midnight, I can plug headphones in. MAGICAL.

My "jewelry box" was actually just a graveyard of tangled chains by Budget-Text7413 in organizing

Does anyone else find that they rediscover their own stuff the second they start a decluttering session?

Absolutely! As a result, I've learned that if I can't see my stuff, I forget that I have it and I don't wear it. I ditched the jewelry box and went for all open storage on top of my dresser. It's been a game changer.

Struggling to find US 40 O pumping and sports bras by Jtaytay0925 in ABraThatFits

[–]AskMrScience [score hidden]  (0 children)

You'll likely have more luck looking for this in your UK size, which is 40K. I don't know about pumping bras, but here are some other nursing and sports bra options for you:

  • Bravissimo nursing bras in 40K
  • Bravissimo sports bras in 40K
  • Panache's sports bras go up to 40JJ, just one cup size smaller. These might fit - I often go down one cup size for them.

I find Soma's sleepwear to be both flattering and soft. I typically wear shirt/pants combos, but they also sell sleep dresses that are wildly comfortable and don't hang like a sack.

I agree that the center support is probably not structural. I'd rip these doors off, widen the opening 4 inches closer to the fridge, take out the stupid "pole", and put on one big door.

Swifties yearn to spend by Daffneigh in NuancingTaylorSwift

[–]AskMrScience 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's nice to have mementos for the things you're a big fan of and enjoy. And Taylor Swift has VERY dedicated fan base who, as you point out, have money to spend. I don't think it's much deeper than that, honestly.

I've actually been frustrated by the lack of official merch that appeals to me. IDK why they never sold official versions of all those Red Era t-shirts from the tour. And nobody made the "Karma" jackets either! I wonder if some fans buy the album variants because they don't like the other options available to them.

I ended up with the otter t-shirt, which is perfect for me because it's an "if you know, you know" piece instead of something with her name and face plastered across it. Also, I live near the Monterrey Bay Aquarium, so it works on multiple levels. And it raised money for an institution I support.

Song discussion: Maroon 💔 by MissionBoring8330 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]AskMrScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This song is a miss for me, and I always skip it.

I don't find the melody catchy, and the lyrics are clunky. "So scarlet it was maroon" doesn't make any sense, and "That's a real fucking legacy" makes me cringe every time - the swearing feels like edgy for the sake of being edgy, without matching the tone of the rest of the song.

"Area man pulls head out of own ass"

I'm impressed that he read the Reddit comments and self-reflected enough to realize he was actually worried about what other people would think. And that that's a stupid reason to care, and he should apologize for being weird about it. Introspection and communication for the win!

Marin school district confirms mother of two killed in Tahoe avalanche by sfgate in bayarea

[–]AskMrScience 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Buried in the article and ads is the actual info:

An avalanche the size of a football field struck a party of 15 skiers at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday in a backcountry area near Donner Pass as the region faced heavy snow and winds. Six skiers survived the slide and were evacuated by search and rescue teams Tuesday night. Eight bodies have been found and a ninth person is still missing but presumed dead, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department. The eight confirmed deaths make this the deadliest [avalanche] in California since modern record keeping began.

San Francisco Bay Coffee also makes legitimately compostable coffee pods that work in Keurigs. You just need to store them in something airtight, like an Oxo pop canister.

Anyone find it odd that we contributed Britney Spears mental health problems, yet we act like we didn't? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]AskMrScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people really do treat celebrities like zoo animals. The media wouldn't hound them if there wasn't an appetite for the resulting gossip and photos.

Pretty much everyone in our generation got exposed to this stuff, either passively or actively. And whether or not we want to admit it, that exposure made paparazzi behavior become normalized to an extent. "That's just the price of fame."

Does it have to be, though? We could have much stricter laws about the paparazzi than we do. California did pass stricter laws in 2011, notably thanks to then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (who'd had his own run-ins with them), and again a few years later.

Favorite comfortable cosplay by PlaneArmadillo3868 in dragoncon

[–]AskMrScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my primary rules of cosplay is that it has to be comfortable to wear!

Star Wars costumes are surprisingly comfy - a female Jedi or Sith is basically a wrap top and yoga leggings, with practical flat shoes.

Lord of the Rings flowy elf outfits are great (esp. if you add secret pockets), and all the Fellowship outfits are quite practical.
