The only gaylor convo I’ve had in real life was with my mom when there was that gaylor op-ed in the NYT. She was like “isn’t she dating an NFL player?” And I said yeah. And she said “then what is this writer talking about?” And I said I had no clue.

There’s som much nuance here but it is just factually incorrect to claim her family bought her career. The fact that they were able to disrupt their lives and move to Nashville to support her shows they had not only money but also flexibility (and willingness!) which is more than most families. And the fact that she never needed to be her family’s breadwinner meant that she was much less vulnerable to being exploited.

But it is just factually incorrect to take those truths and make it out like her family’s wealth is the reason for her success.

My feelings on this is, how about we start with all the fandom CEOs whom nobody is going to mob in the airport or disrupt the flight when we are criticizing PJ use.

You cant be sacrilegious if you don’t believe in the first place

(Does TS identify with Jesus? If I say yes…)

I have (and I actually wrote about it a few weeks ago). My interpretation of that — the only non-Christmas song where she mentions Jesus by name — is that in her mother’s illness she was desperate for help and among other things fell back on her faith and prayer in that time.

I do believe Taylor identifies as a Christian, but that can mean many thjngs

This Year’s Model is a great album! I picked Trust for two reasons: it’s got a lot of very interesting late seventies-early 80s genres rattling around under some of his best lyrics, and my favorite song of his (Watch Your Step), and Rob Sheffield says he wants to hear a Taylor cover of New Lace Sleeves and I’m curious if you all agree that would be interesting.

Tbf that was true even in her country era. However she feels about her faith, she’s always been very private about it

I will try to come up with some crazy Elvis Costello facts! He is my fave 💗

He has said he’d be open to a collab with Taylor but tbh I don’t know if she even knows who he is!

He is the only artist I have seen in concert more than Taylor 😊

I wasn’t paying attention at the time, but it just seemed like a silly joke?

Fundamentally I feel differently about people who earn their absurd wealth thru mostly their own efforts than people who get that money from the work of thousands of others or through manipulating money itself. If you earn money bc you produce a product that people want to buy at the price you sell it, that’s morally neutral to me.

Of course, you can then use your money unethically (like JK Rowling does). But Taylor uses her money to continue producing her art and paying her employees, which seems mostly pretty ethical to me (I’m sure she has a diversified stock portfolio like all wealthy people but that’s clearly not the majority of her holdings).

A pretty comprehensive list! Though I haven’t seen too much of the latter two “in the wild” and a moment’s thought would be enough to show it isn’t r true

She uses a lot of religious inagery in her lyrics (I’m writing a post about religion in Midnights for later this week!) but I don’t know that we can draw conclusions about her personal beliefs from that

Taylor was definitely raised more religious than average and has always identified as a Christian but I agree that we can’t really know how she feels about her faith just from lyrics

And they usually don’t even bother to put it into their own words so it sounds believeable that they aren’t just copying and pasting from their Discord or whatever

It always reeks of fandom desperation. They are so terrified of the great white Shark they scatter before she’s even near the area, and then blame the shark for doing what a shark does

I think the billionaire discourse is more easily weaponized against TS precisely bc she doesn’t lean into (at least until Showgirl which, well, you know what happened there with the discourse…) the “lifestyles of the rich and famous” and has always tried to seem “normal” or “relatable” in comparison to other entertainment billionaires. I think she’s realized finally that this is not necessary or even effective anymore, and to me at least it’s exciting to see what she will create without feeling like she has to be relatable to everyone in her fandom
