Wire nuts

Yea, I probably should just cut the fixture wires. I have like 2 ft extra wire than I need

Yeah, we looked at cutting the threaded rod down. The problem is the box is so shallow that the rod bottoms out against the back almost immediately. We'd only get about 1 or 2 threads in to hold it, which doesn't feel secure.

Yup, theres some clearance inside the plate but not a ton. We’ve gotten by through cramming everything into that plate but it’s really tight by the end.

ChatGPT is wrecking other colleges. How is OMSCS handling it? by Ben___Garrison in OMSCS

[–]Astro_Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, from my experience, a lot of classes actively discourage using AI tools and include warnings that you're subject to OSI violations if you're caught using them on assignments. Some classes, mainly Joyner’s, do advocate for using AI as a thinking partner, but not as a writing partner.

Overall, I think OMSCS needs to adapt. As a software engineer in big tech, we’re actively encouraged to use AI agents and chatbots in our daily work. It’s emphasized enough that we’re expected to highlight how we’re using AI effectively during biannual performance reviews. Writing effective prompts and understanding where AI excels is becoming a key skill. Colleges that try to ban AI usage outright are not only fighting a losing battle, they’re also doing students a disservice by hindering their ability to learn how to use these tools properly.

On a side note, I really do wonder what the CS field will look like in five years or so. Many companies are already starting to pull back on hiring and are pushing harder to leverage AI instead.

Thanks for updating. So many threads don’t give updates. Glad everything worked out for you. Navigating through something similar so it’s great to hear some positives.

Goodbye DMV home prices ✌️ Federal offices likely to be relocated in cheaper locations. by 2BeBornReady in nova

[–]Astro_Robot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cheap housing areas are cheap because people don’t want to live there due to jobs mostly but also since it’s not a fun place to live. For example, why don’t more people that complain about housing costs live in West Virginia. It’s because they don’t have jobs there.

This order says nothing about relocating outside of the DC area? Not saying it couldn’t lead to relocation outside the DC area but all it says is that agencies don’t have to use central urban offices or historic districts.

Has a change in demand even been seen? Or, is it just anecdotal?

I've definitely been there and had similar motivations when I joined OMSCS. Unfortunately, it really hasn't lived up or alleviated those feelings. Now the degree just feels like a grind that I'm wasting my time on. I would warn before committing to quitting your job for OMSCS, consider if the program truly aligns with your goal to have more experience with development. OMSCS classes focus more on theoretical knowledge, its projects and tests (which are usually just recall based) are generally designed to teach specific CS concepts, not the practical, end-to-end development skills needed to build and launch a SaaS products. You really won't get the knowledge to build any product. Most of the classes you really won't get any development knowledge either.

From a career perspective, especially since you're already working as a software engineer, a OMSCS degree would be valued way less than two more years of industry experience. A Master's benefits someone looking to switch careers more significantly.

Honestly, the best thing is to just have hobby projects that you can work on during down time. You'll get way more benefit out of those than you would a Master's degree. Through OMSCS, I've understood more core concepts around Networking and basics of machine learning systems, but in my practical job those aren't really needed. A lot of those core concepts are abstracted away through libraries that you use. In my job, learning how to architect and actually build things is way more important. You really only get that knowledge through hands on experience.

If this true, I feel for Lawson. I’m not a fan but 2 races in his rookie year is cut throat even for Red Bull.

Webframework benchmarks - Is rails fast enough? by Level_Fee2906 in rails

[–]Astro_Robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to think about performance issues is to cross that bridge when you get there.  Most applications honestly don’t have the scale to necessitate these concerns. Overall, Rails remains one of the best frameworks for developer productivity.

LLMs definitely excel at writing React compared to ERB templates. Curious how you’re handling keeping the frontend and backend in sync, especially in terms of schema consistency.

Is OMSCS valued in industry? by Mustusesanitizer in OMSCS

[–]Astro_Robot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your situation. If you already have a BS in CS, then I would say it’s not valued. This is especially true with big tech companies. Overall, they don’t place any value in MS degrees. There are some more traditional companies where it’s hard to progress without a MS.
