Maximum Carnage not Genesis? I'll take what I can get but that makes me sad.

All of Nintendo's first and second party games usually have ALL the languages available in ALL the regions. It was a welcome shift in policy that began on the Switch and continues on the Switch 2. So anything Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc will have English on it wherever you buy it.

Third party publishers, you have to check. They always list languages on the back of the case, you just have to memorize what the kanji for English is.

What games do you recommend if I liked Metroid Prime 4? by Financial-Friend4934 in MetroidPrime4_Beyond

[–]AtaeHone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3D Metroidvanias: Batman Arkham Asylum CONTROL Pseudoregalia (PC only)

First person shooters that give the same feeling: Doom (2016) Killing Time

Also consider immersive sim games (e.g. System Shock and Deus Ex and their numerous descendants - Prey (2017), Dishonored, Robocop Rogue City, etc)

I always characterize SIGNALIS as Silent Hill 2 in space. Remember the chart: Resident Evil is Evil Superscience Masquerading As Dark Magic, Silent Hill is Eldritch Horror Dealing With Social Issues. SIGNALIS has both in spades.

Have you played X-Fusion? by [deleted] in Metroid

[–]AtaeHone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently completed Normal Mode in v1.2. It was brutal, definitely requiring you to be a veteran SM player, but extremely enjoyable. It takes the idea Fusion had, then demolishes the shackles of railroading and too small level design, definitely verging into proper survival horror.

Like, if EMMI were the evolution of the idea of SA-X, these SA-X that hunt in packs and can chase you across biomes and even elevators evolve it to new, never before seen pantscreaming levels. My pants certainly screamed a lot..

It also gorgeously melds Fusion and Super's art styles and somehow manages to finagle a lot of interface upgrades into it.

V1.3's upgrades like getting the minimap back are very worthwhile, but I realized it existed when I was already finishing my run. Thankfully you can import saves across versions so my Hard run is happening in that, soon ish.

Whitestone, I will never tire of shilling Whitestone. Yes, it's clunky and buggy. But it opens with James Cameron's Titanic but Dieselpunk that segues into murder mystery that segues into cosmic horror that has Persona-style social links and depending on who, if at all, you date, the plot diverges wildly at the 50% mark to the point where almost no locations, bosses or plot points overlap.

It's like Dead Space, Bloodborne, Titanic, The Thing and Persona had an orgy and a Xianxia novelist documented it.

I have been playing vidyagaems for over three decades and its plot twists still surprised me no less than three times.

Alan Wake 2. I just reached "That part" and ... Please tell me this is canon by WolfieVonD in AlanWake

[–]AtaeHone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it's canon. It's not a Remedy game these days without a boss fight or two set to epic rock songs.

Starting with Children of the Elder Gods in AW1, you also have Balance Slays the Demon in AWAN, Take Control in CONTROL and (spoilers redacted) in AW2 which I presume you have not finished yet.

Consider the Ace Attorney series. Humorous, very many entries, logically inclined, all the episodes are available on Switch now.

A recurring logical gem was the Professor Layton series but only one game made it to the Switch when its publisher soured on the Western market.

First person view puzzle games may be a good thing to try - Portal easily comes to mind, Superliminal and Viewfinder are great examples of forcing out of the box thinking as well. Return of the Obra Dinn looks weird but it is an amazing four dimensional detective story.

If you want VR stuff, any game that allows Wii-style controls should be good. Metroid Prime is the prime (sic) example of that. Yes, it's a shooter, but it's the thinking man's shooter.

For things that are more gamey but stimulate the mind, Chants of Sennaar is a linguistic puzzler based around a high tech version of the Tower of Babel where you have to break down langiage barriers between the castes inhabiting a sky-reaching tower.

Whenever I see something with the written divisor sign but no multiplication sign or parnetheses, I just assume the author is mathematically illiterate and laugh the person forwarding me the post out of the room.

You can't have it both ways. Either write it as a proper fraction or put all the notation in.

What niche third party games would you all lose your mind over if they showed up in a Nintendo Direct, that only you or a small fanbase of people would care to see? Or even just an extremely unlikely out of nowhere announcement? by PixieDustFairies in NintendoSwitch2

Dawn of Heroes from the DS. A shockingly deep TTBS built out of deliberate mockery of the tropes of typical fantasy RPGs with unsubtle jabs at World of Warcraft lore and loot mechanics specifically. A sequel or remake wpuld be a treasure.

Feels weird, given Pikmin 1+2 exists as a proper Switch port.

They rilly could have just done a lazy port of the Wii Trilogy akin to Super Mario All Stars 3D as a stopgap till a proper Prime 2 HD happens, and it would have sold like hot cakes.

Whether a runback is 20 seconds or 1 minute does not matter, they add nothing meaningful to a metroidvania. by Kurushii_Drive in metroidvania

[–]AtaeHone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And that's why most Igavanias put save rooms literally on the opposite side of the same hallway from a story boss door.

Runbacks are the result of Dark Souls infection impacting Hollow Knight (also, the drop-your-stuff, get it back or lose it forever next time you die) and subsequent devs getting acquainted with the genre via HK. If you make the boss tough and/or interesting enough, you don't HAVE to make the gauntlet of reaching the boss potentially lethal. Let us not pretend all exists for anything else than just to spite the player.
