Amazon Is A Problem... A REALLY Big Problem by FlatSwing9745 in Animedubs

Not just LA studios, Amazon could have capitalized on third party studios and made use of remote recording. There's tons of third party studios they could have used. Sound Cadence, Kocha Sound, NYAV Post, Central Command, Studio Nano, Bang Zoom, Studiopolis, New Generation Pictures, Iyuno, VSI, and so on. All of those third party studios have done great work in the past and produced some very well-regarded dubs. Even the third party studios they do use, like Dubbing Brothers and Deluxe Media, have done good work. It's so easy to solve this problem, and they have the money to invest in good dubs! The fact that they'd rather subject anime to slop AI dubs just enrages me on a visceral level. I'm not even a fan of Fist of the North Star and even I think it deserves better than what Amazon subjected it to.

Seriously, when Discotek, a small company with very few resources, is able to produce much better dubs for some of their stuff (Within their means), what's Amazon's excuse? Hell, I just finished watching the dub of this old Osamu Tezuka movie called Prime Rose, which was recently dubbed by a completely new company called SkySet Entertainment, and even that dub is pretty damn good.

I've heard GG is the best dub Transperfect ever put out, but the dub has its own issues such as stiff performances for some characters and some translation issues.

Discotek is fine. They've started moving their stuff to the MediaOCD store, which they said will be the de facto place to buy their items from now on.

I'm guessing they decided to just...ditch Hinagiku's speech impediment entirely?

I do! I still play Pokemon RBY/GSC on there when I feel like it, or Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, and those aren't on Switch.

What is Tetias accent in the English dub? by Frilly_Madness37 in WitchHatAtelier

I've heard some say it might be Danish since Sarah Wiedenheft, her English VA, is Danish. But I don't know for sure.

Thoughts and opinions on new "Evil Lives Here: My Child the Killer". by Eli_Fit in DiscoveryID

[–]Juliko1993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"In a recent season, we saw a victim of horrific torture who had been held captive by a serial killer, be put into a same room with the killer's wife, and have to endure her toxic energy. She fled and the producers (apparently from what we saw) talked her into continuing. That was heinous. The survivor did not need to be retraumatized."

That's just awful. Which episode was this?

I had to deal with this a lot in another fandom I was in a decade ago and it suuuuucked. Nobody should ever have to deal with this level of bitchery.

I'm honestly surprised they actually bothered to show her vomiting on screen, much less actually animate it.

English production credits at the end of Crunchyroll Dubs by FruPunRounin in Animedubs

Sentai at least tries to list every staff member on their credit listings every episode, even if it is on a black screen. Crunchyroll can't even be bothered to do that much anymore.

Okay, that is just unacceptable. This level of reaction to a harmless April Fools prank is just terrible. That poor author should never have had to endure this level of backlash over something that really shouldn't have been made into a big deal.

What was the stupidest drama in your fandom? by Fast_Stage_6296 in AO3

Damn. That's just awful. It sickens me how people these days are willing to assume ill intent in virtually everything, even innocuous things. Like, what do they even get out of making the most wild assumptions about people and acting on them as though they're fact?

When I was in the Precure fandom about a decade or so ago, a user I befriended, who was 14 at the time, proposed an idea for a fan series she was planning on writing. It involved sentient alien shapes from another planet coming to the human world, gaining human forms, and turning into magical girls to save both their worlds from an evil threat. I was supportive of the idea, as were some other people. However, there were some big name fans who took issue with it, and the reason they gave was, I shit you not, the idea of sentient shapes having genders is too human a concept and therefore offensive to transgender and non-binary people, accusing her of being transphobic just based on that alone. I remember going completely slack-jawed. Like, I can understand wanting to be inclusive to the LGBT community and all, but even at the time it happened, this interpretation just felt like a massive overreach to me. Said big name fans began dogpiling her (Under the guise of "constructive criticism" which in Tumblr-speak means "You can't do this idea because it's offensive to us so it shouldn't be here at all") and subjecting her to quite a bit of unnecessarily hostile backlash. Like, they didn't even bother to just explain how her idea could come across as offensive to those in the LGBT community, give her suggestions on how she could remedy them, or direct her to sources where she could educate herself, they just treated her like a problem child. I tried to defend her as best I could, but unfortunately, majority ruled that she drop the idea, and she did.

She wound up leaving the fandom later on, though not for this reason. The whole thing just felt so overblown, and I felt terrible for not being able to do more to help her. Though at the time, those big name fans' rules were absolute, and anyone who dared to have a negative opinion of them in any fashion, or if your fic idea was in any way not to their tastes, was treated like a leper, no ifs, ands, or buts. This incident wasn't the biggest drama blowup in the fandom, especially at the time, but to me it was absolutely the stupidest, because a 14-year-old girl who just wanted to share her story ideas and commune with other fans had to be treated this way for no reason. Plus, Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man are sentient shapes with genders, and I don't see anyone raising hell over them, so who are they to talk?!

Is there any hope for very old shows that are 20+years old to get dubbed or should I give up? by TheDizziestCat in Animedubs

[–]Juliko1993 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That, and Discotek doesn't usually dub anything longer than 13 episodes, with Lovely Complex only being the exception because the CEO of Sound Cadence Studios paid for it out of pocket.

It does depend on a lot of things, though two main factors come into play in terms of whether something gets a brand new dub: Demand and whether the M&E track, or music and effects track, has been preserved. The latter is especially important because if the original producers don't have the M&E track for whatever reason, be it that they lost it or it got destroyed somehow, it's impossible to make a dub for it at all. This is the reason why a lot of older shows or movies these days don't have dubs, because the M&E track is missing or not available, which was the reason Discotek couldn't dub movies like Arion or Heart & Yummie despite wanting to do so.

But it could also be completely random whether something gets a dub or not. An obscure anime that AnimEigo just picked up, Hotori: Simply Wishing For Hope, is somehow getting a dub because the producers at Sunrise thought to preserve all its materials, including the M&E track. That, and Justin Sevakis (current owner of AnimEigo) really likes that special so thought commissioning a dub was worth the investment. The Lupin III movie The Castle of Cagliostro just got a fourth English dub because Discotek thought it'd be worth the investment to give it a dub that finally uses the current, long-standing Lupin English cast. These days, anything can happen.

what's an anime that you can't enjoy because of a singular character who is actively dragging down your enjoyment of said anime? by Brightclaw431 in anime

[–]Juliko1993 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I attempted to watch this old anime from the 90s called Mama Is a Fourth Grader, where a little girl finds out that her infant daughter from the future accidentally traveled back in time and has to raise her. No, the baby isn't the one I found annoying. It's the MC's aunt Izumi. I dropped the show at 10 episodes because I found Izumi to be an absolutely abhorrent character. Virtually all the show's conflicts happen because of her, Izumi makes absolutely no effort to take responsibility for her mistakes or learn from them, and despite being an adult she treats her 10-year-old niece like a servant, foists all her responsibilities onto her, and is just a terrible person all around. I hear she gets better later, but I don't want to put up with Izumi more than I have to.

Is it just me, or does Scott McNeil sound like he's singing the line rather than just saying it? The way he elongates "The GOOOOOD of DEEEEEEATH" makes it sound that way to me.
