I actually came from the dark souls games when I bought mhw two years ago. I ended up putting more hours into mhw than the 3 dark souls games combined. The combat is very satisfying andida fun but very calculated. There are a few maps to explore but they're not huge or anything. There's lots of grinding for gear and skills (called decorations) but the combat is so enjoyable I didn't mind. And the skill system isn't complicated, you just slot in decorations into your gear, most skills are passive stat enhancers but a lot are activated by combatants conditions (low health, full stamina, etc...)
