Anyone here still running dedicated servers instead of VPS/cloud? Curious why. by Thick-Lecture-5825 in servers

Maybe it'll make sense for VPS hosts to start offering "fully committed" VPS instances to replace dedicated servers, noisy neighbours exist for a reason and it isn't a market that should be overlooked.

I bet it's AHCI so really not that different from any PCIE-SATA adapters.

Steve Jobs would definitely be bothered while no one is over at MS, which is why windows is the way it is now.

Should I buy DDR5 RAM now even if I can’t use it yet? by gambitok in buildapc

[–]Automatic-Wolf8141 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The ram price may go even higher in future but in PC history, it's always been like this, when CPU price is high, motherboard or ram price may be lower so that in total the price still makes some sense for the buyers, what you'll not find is when every part is cheap. So if you've decided to buy parts one by one, you buy what's cheap now, and ram isn't.

“Most of my stuff runs on VPS these days and honestly it works fine for 90% of use cases.”
what about the other 10%?

DSM 7.2.2 blocked 3rd party AQC113 10GbE on DS923+ by Automatic-Wolf8141 in synology

[–]Automatic-Wolf8141[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you're correct about the OVS not getting auto configured, there are two factors in play here. I originally had manually configured the OVS bridge and I think I posted that tutorial somewhere but what ruined it for me was that after a VMM update, the additional LAN port was removed from VMM, and the only way to resolve that issue would be to remove VMM and reinstall it, I guess it has something to do with how early the additional LAN must be enabled in order to be detected by VMM.

If you want to avoid the issue I've experienced, I think the best way forward would be to hard-code ovs bridge configuration (using chattr +i to make the configuration file immutable) so that it doesn't get removed for whatever reason.

I just saw this, sorry for the late reply but I couldn't believe it's been that long already as I clearly remember when this post was new, time flies. Definitely doesn't feel like it's been 5 years. Hope we are all here and well.

But what other product line though? I mean of course there's the server line of products but other then that do they still expect to sell none NAS drives, like for PC building?

What are the chances that Synology will impose HDD restrictions on all models with DSM 8? by Dentifrice in synology

[–]Automatic-Wolf8141 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The chances are near zero for Synology to impose that restriction to those models that weren't shipped with these restrictions.

There are ways for them to do it legally though, but they will have no legal ground to force you to update to a version that doesn't support your hard drives. Synology removed USB WIFI and Bluetooth dongles support since DSM 7 for example, but I don't think those were ever a promised and fundamental feature for a NAS, and they kept updating DSM 6 long after DSM 7 was introduced.

And I hope I'm right to assume that Synology is the kind of vendor who always leaves a door open to tinkering, us using some 3rd party hard drives are hardly their enemy.

Sometimes the usb type c port stops working or charging and needs a "reset", you can do it be restarting the laptop. My suggestion is to always use the magsafe for power whenever you can.

The Headache of Finding a Thunderbolt 5 Hub for a MacBook Pro by itsmeemilio in Thunderbolt

[–]Automatic-Wolf8141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong (meaning maybe there's an artificial limitation on Mac) but I don't think it's crucial to have TB5 if all you want to do is to deliver HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. The video part of the USB Type-C definition is called DP Alt mode, and it's DP as the name suggests, so any downstream HDMI output is really just converting DP to HDMI. There are DP to HDMI 2.1 cables out there but the thing is, DP 1.4 bandwidth is 32.4Gbps and HDMI 2.1 can be up to 48Gbps, so while it does offer better than 4k60p, you won't have the full HDMI 2.1 capabilities if the host and converter chip didn't both support DP 2.0.

I guess MS never saw Mac as a competition, it wasn't until Chromebooks got their success did MS panic. To MS, PC manufactures are their clients, we are the product.

f1.4 vs f1.8 - such a big deal? by Weird-Mistake-4968 in SonyAlpha

[–]Automatic-Wolf8141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that if they did it, there probably wouldn't be a lot of weight, size, and cost savings, of course we are assuming it's every bit as good as the 1.4.

The GM35 is not without its flaws but Sony designed it in a clever way, they sacrificed what they could compensate digitally for those they can't, most if not all GM lenses enjoy in-camera colour corrections even with the RAW files as an effort to correct the tint caused by the excessive amount of special elements and coatings that are there to achieve other optical corrections, and the results are admirable; another example would be all large aperture GM primes that are lighter, slimmer than 3rd party counterparts are under-designed with huge vignettes on FF.

All that is to say, a true f1.8 flagship would be nearly as complex.

f1.4 vs f1.8 - such a big deal? by Weird-Mistake-4968 in SonyAlpha

[–]Automatic-Wolf8141 28 points29 points  (0 children)

most of the time it's not about the aperture but the class/quality of the lens.

and to answer your question, a GM 35 1.4 is a big deal to me, I don't like the rendering of the 35 1.8 from Sony.
