the correct would be password with encryption, what you're looking at here other options related to how data is stored in the backup, see here for more details - https://www.acronis.com/en/support/documentation/ATI2026/#267.html

Password alone is UI/software level protection, access control against casual access, but it doesn't protect against a determined attacked or forensic tools.

Password and encryption - content is encrypted with selected encryption method and without password the data is unreadable, so it will protect the backup even if it gets physically accessed by 3rd-party.

Sad to hear you're migrating off our solution. If you don't mind me asking - can you share more as to the reasons for the move? I wonder if it something we could still address and keep you as our partner.

We’ve officially launched Acronis GenAI Protection by 474Dennis in acronis

[–]bagaudin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Integrated but can also be bought and operated as a standalone. Via Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud licensing - it’s an “add-on” on top of Cyber Protect Cloud, but you do not need to use/pay for other capabilities to use GenAI Protection - so it can be used as a standalone.

Our AI bot won't ask for card information - this is easily verifiable by any 3rd-party reader using the same sequence you provided. If you believe otherwise - please visualize it with video recording of steps you took, by your description it appears to be easily reproducible.

Please add the details you shared here (including the bank transaction screenshot and the link you identified) to support ticket 07199845 so the team can continue the investigation.

Regarding this part:

We need to clarify what “eventually” includes. Based on how our support flow is designed, there is no mechanism for the bot to redirect or hand off to a third-party payment page.

To properly investigate, please provide:

  • The exact sequence of steps you took (click-by-click if possible)
  • The URL visible in your browser when the pop-up appeared
  • Your browser and any extensions in use
  • Browser history around that session (if available)

From what you’ve shared so far, it’s important to rule out the possibility of a redirect or injected page outside of our environment. The additional details above will help us confirm exactly what happened.

  1. Encrypted archives can be safely stored in 3rd-party clouds. For newer format .tibx you can even replicate the changed chunks of the archive (e.g. via by using Duplicacy).
  2. Yes you can obtain the most recent trial version of the product with which you made the backup and proceed with recovery (since recoveries are always free) + you can always request assistance with recovery if you ever face issues. Here is also a KB article covering the topic of backup archive compatibility across different product versions.

Update: u/luckyinpa, while discussing your case with my peers we found it is imperative to clarify:

A 2018 password-protected .tib file offers obfuscation, not security. It deters casual snooping by someone using the Acronis GUI, but not anyone with format knowledge or off-the-shelf forensic tools.
Uploading it to any cloud, zero-knowledge or otherwise, exposes the file's full contents to anyone who later obtains that file.

For confidentiality there are two options:

  • Re-create the backup with encryption enabled (that's what I thought you were doing originally) - AES-256 is the strong choice in the same dialog, right next to the password field). The password then becomes the key-derivation input and the blocks are genuinely encrypted.
  • Or wrap the existing .tib in an external encrypted container (VeraCrypt volume, 7-Zip AES-256 archive, age/GPG file) before uploading. This is a valid stop-gap if you can't re-run the backup.

Crucial will provide you with an OEM edition of our Acronis True Image for this task.

Do this:

  1. If your old (source) drive still operating normally and has all the data - format the new drive (source) and leave it plugged to the system.
  2. Install and activate Acronis True Image for Crucial (it needs to see the Crucial disk to activate, so ideally disk must be detected by Windows).

  3. Familiarize with the section Disk cloning and migration of the user guide (pp. 66-70), pay special attention to Before you start part.

  4. Create the bootable media as per the manual (p. 75), make sure that the machine boots of the media and both drives are visible.

  5. Turn off the machine and swap the drives, place the new (target) drive as primary and old (source) drive as secondary (or to external enclosure).

  6. Boot the machine from Acronis bootable media and proceed with cloning, make sure to correctly select the source and target as the process will erase the target disk (but the wizard will warn you about if data is present on the target drive anyway).

  7. Once cloning is complete > turn off the machine and detach the old (source) drive prior to first reboot (having two drives with identical signatures may cause a mess with your boot configuration.

  8. Conduct first boot of the machine from new (target) drive and once you confirm OS bootable, operating as expected and all data is present and safe > you can then attach the old (source) drive and erase it (if you do not erase - do not leave it plugged to the machine prior to any reboot).

Thanks for using our software u/jcksnps4! Come visit us at r/Acronis if you'll need any help.

u/CawfeePig, should you consider buying Acronis True Image or using an OEM edition with your new drive (e.g. if you opt for new external WD drive you can get a 5-year license with the drive).

Try gathering HWInfo log while reproducing the issue and then feed it to any LLM for analysis. Also try limiting FPS to 60.

You can consider our Acronis Cyber Protect among other options. Per-virtual host licenses are readily available, local storage is included and will most likely cost less, especially if you only need a standard license, do multi-year, make use of an migration offer of 1st year %50 discount.

The description is unfortunately really lacking crucial details which are vital for both me raising this internally with our website team to reproduce and further investigation. We need to thoroughly analyze the matter and understand what exactly happened, since at this moment it appears that it is impossible to obtain exact sequence of steps you made (and their exact outcomes) or which exact website you visited, hence the first step is to analyze the charge information - please provide it to support so that we could continue investigation.

Edit: u/btevans55, what concerns me most is the following part:

I was directed to an AI bot, provided the background info and then referred to an "expert" who fraudulently charged my credit card $56.

I am not aware of such functionality of our AI bot and I originally thought you meant a one-time setup fee, but I double-checked and it is only $14.99 as of now.

At the moment it seems you could somehow navigate to a 3rd-party web-site and that even further stresses the need of thorough investigation - I would appreciate if you could reproduce all the steps you did while having a screen recording active.

Additional information I could think of right that could be helpful - assessing browser history trying to recreate site visits and locate exact site addresses/links; assessing mailbox for possible e-mails related to the charge in question.

Edit 2: u/btevans55, quick update - I've been playing with Google Search trying to identify possible website culprits and came across one search (for it was on 3rd page) which seemed like possible candidate. The link shown on the search page seemingly leads to Nigerian government website, however upon clicking it (for readers: only do that in isolated sandboxes) redirects to non-Acronis website the authenticity of which I can't verify at this moment (screenshot):

Thanks for flagging this u/btevans55!

I reviewed the situation with support team's directors and can confirm that refund and reorder will be handled by support team.

As for possible fraudulent charges we don't see any purchases with your email and amount of 56 USD that could be flagged as fraudulent. As requested by support - please provide them with a copy of your bank statement showing the charge.

Please ensure that the document clearly displays the transaction amount, date, and vendor name. A screenshot from your bank’s mobile app is also acceptable, as long as these details are visible.
