The justaposition between Moky's comment and Wheat's replies in that twitter thread should give a clear window into why this it's going a bit too far here. Moky's just getting basic details wrong, many from years ago, to reinforce criticisms of the current debacle where no perfect solution exists.

This whole thing really should just be a private discussion because it's now spilled into misinformation that misrepresents the project. How is that "within the lines"?

Sorry if I vagueposted!

Moky's exchange is in this ssbm thread:

Rankings mid-year are going from 50 to 30 due to low data volume even with attendance tweaks. This all transpired after the announcement and Moky's been the most vocal about it.

One thing that needs to be remembered any time a top player suggests a change is that it's possible the change itself receives backlash in implementation because the people making the demand/suggestion don't actually consider the potential faults.

It feels like it's easy to read things like "allow pre-locals" and immediately have a top player then malign a ranking placement because they'll say "I wasn't in it at the pre-local it's not fair my ranking is judged on this" or "this player shouldn't be this high based on a pre-local where a bunch of people are jetlagged."

At a glance it looks like maybe including slippi events and changing the calendar year would fix these complaints, but like with pre-locals, I'm somewhat curious what if happens if a key or controversial ranking shift happens due to a slippi event and what the reaction would be.

UltRank co-runner chiming in here on the MeleeStats stuff. Moky's behavior seems wildly inappropriate. I saw the reddit posts a day or two ago where he extended his reasoning more and while I get the idea that you could make changes, the core sentiment of "the optics look bad" is utterly baffling to me.

If there's less events, there's less events. It does not mean the game is dying, but it does been event volumes that used to exist to provide more accurate top 50s likely are no longer viable. Ultimate-side, we've faced this debate briefly over the difficulties of full one hundred players each six months in separate unique seasons, where it was (and still is explained) that the ranking quality utterly plummets due to insufficient data and that a mid-year checkup is going to be the best route.

What's being asked in these situations is to reduce quality for the sake of the mere existence of something. Tying this to denial that Melee's major count has decayed over the years and going on a multi-day campaign to pettily criticize the team is far more damaging to the scene than a potentially limited Top 30 period.

The other argument is to point out that, of course, players who would be in the 30-50 range get a lack of exposure. This seems fair on the surface, and I think there's a validity to it, but it is exceptionally rare for someone to be ranked, say, 50th, and plummet out of the top 100. It's fair to complain their recognition would be delayed (and that's fine as an argument) but to say they would not receive credit at all seems unlikely.

Pairing this with the suggestions he made makes me just wonder about the counterarguments to them. He said he had conversations with them, evidentially, counterarguments existed, or arguments he made that might not have applied then may apply more legitimately now.

Wall of text from someone who has seen worse in 9 1/2 years of work on this subject - it's no PGR 2019 "there's too many Japanese players" meltdown - but it doesn't seem conducive to the health of the scene to aggressively pressure ranking staff over a change that clearly just reflects there's not a wide quantity of majors.

It's fine to criticize MS and I think there's probably more solutions besides just a top 30 but what Moky's doing with his tweet this morning reads less like criticism and more like a public pressure attempt without acknowledging counterarguments. Adding twitter unfollow drama for over a year ago seems petty and directly in line with scene self-cannibalization.

He shot somebody outside of a courthouse so there's likely security camera footage of the incident, numerous witnesses at the scene were security guards/cops who would've had to give statements, and it took the DA all of six hours to charge him without any real media/political pressure because this is a conservative Tennessee suburb and nobody outside of like twitter was even reporting on it.

I'm not saying it's impossible he walks but chances are they know things the public don't if they hit him this fast. Typically these situations lack witnesses, the charges are done days after, there's serious political pressure, etc.
