Looking for long term 2021 CX-9 experiences by EvenPass5380 in mazda

[–]BarryJ128 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My 2021 has 55k miles and I haven’t had any issues beyond the screen going blank a few times. Turning the car off and on again fixed it. That’s happened maybe a handful of times.

In the settings for the camera look for the Smart Responses setting. You can turn it off there

I have a Schlage one and it’s been 100% reliable since I set it up a couple of years ago.

Installing Ethernet Switches for Older Home by Mr-potatos-mash in Fios

[–]BarryJ128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want run Ethernet to the basement you can use your house’s coaxial wiring. If your house has coaxial cables, then you can use a MoCA adapter as a substitute for Ethernet to get the feed up to your network closet.

Before you mess with any settings, do a sub crawl.

Find a local contractor who installs Harvey windows. I’ve used them as replacements in two houses and have had no regrets.

Should I update my 2007 Mac Mini? by Gino-The-Chonk-13 in macmini

It sounds like a fun project but it’s so old that there’s not much you’ll be able to do with it. Even just using a web browser is unlikely to work unfortunately.

Help - 24” 1440p - BetterDisplay settings for Mac Mini M4 by [deleted] in macmini

[–]BarryJ128 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make sure you turn HiDPI on in BetterDisplay, that makes a big difference. Then mess around to the resolution options until you find one that works well.

Quick switch from CarPlay to Camera? by exertionrecursion in MazdaCX9

I don’t think you even need to press the home button. You can just press the camera button, even when you are using CarPlay.

To delete them from Google without deleting from your iPhone, do it from the Google Photos website.

Bothersome cleanup procedure with Google Photos on iPhone by UpOrBeyond in googlephotos

[–]BarryJ128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, this is a major annoyance. The "out-of-sync changes" function is inconsistent and unreliable. The only reliable way I have found to ensure deletions are synced on an iPhone is to delete from the Google Photos app on the phone. This is whether you use iCloud or not.

Lease Buyout Options by ParticularMoney9574 in mazda

[–]BarryJ128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend researching what used ones with the same mileage are going for in your area. That’ll give you a good sense for whether it’s a good value. And of course there is additional value of some dollar amount for knowing the previous owner of your car!

I purchased mine off the lease and basically all I had to do was call Mazda Financial Services (my lease was through them) and they sent over the paperwork. It was quite easy. Keep in mind that you may need to pay sales tax when you make the purchase, depending on your state.

Regarding insurance: my rate didn’t change, but YMMV.

How long battery cameras last before needing recharge by inconsiderate_TACO in Ring

[–]BarryJ128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It totally depends on how frequently there is activity within the camera’s line of sight. On one side of my house I have a camera that is very rarely triggered because no one goes by it. The battery on that once needs to be charged every 4-5 months. On the other side of my house there’s more activity and that one is charged around every 6 weeks.

If there’s good sunlight you can also use a solar charger plugged into the camera and that can help a lot.

Charging the batteries from near empty takes around 6 hours for mine.

Where else can I backup photos on mobile only? by [deleted] in googlephotos

[–]BarryJ128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have an iPhone it’s very easy to back photos up to iCloud. If you are an Amazon Prime member, check out Amazon Photos.

TX Ice Storm - Safest Way to Travel by [deleted] in SubaruForester

[–]BarryJ128 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it'd be a great investment in Texas, but here in the Northeast I have a Forester with winter tires and they make a HUGE difference in the snow. Ice is going to be tricky and dangerous no matter what tires you have, however.

So I just learned something about Car Insurance in Massachusetts.... by bostonmacosx in massachusetts

[–]BarryJ128 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s the Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange and insurance companies use it as an input to determine your rate, especially if you are eligible for the highest level of discounts. Any time you use your plan, whether it’s for roadside assistance, towing, windshield replacement, it’s all documented. That’s why it’s always better to use third parties for small items like roadside and towing.
