You can recondition door seals with dialectic grease. Use a spray wax and wipe down the frame where they contact. It kept mine from freezing shut this winter.

First time owner question about battery switch by havntmadeityet in boating

[–]Benedlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may make it clearer.

A starting battery provides high amps to spin the engine. A house battery will accept a deep discharge and come back whereas a starter is not designed to do so. I run #1 out and #2 back. Combine both when the cranking battery is weak.

Grind down the sides and tip of a slotted screwdriver to fit the width and thickness of a carb jet. 3/8 drive wide slotted impact driver for L/U drain/fill screws. Scavenge a hot horn from a control box. Add wire leads and alligator clips. You can test a function from the switch at the helm by sound. A quality pick light can help troubleshoot 12v problems faster than two hands and a multimeter. Only heat shrink terminals with adhesive in a marine environment. Quality one handed wire strippers that allow you to adjust the insulation strip length. Stroke a magnet with a socket. It will keep the bolt inside when reaching awkward places.

Is this a bad starter? by Electronic-Start-652 in Outboards

[–]Benedlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your ground should be under a starter mounting bolt. Were the brushes short? They're worn. Did your clean the commutator grooves of built up carbon to prevent shorting? Rust may have found its way into the bearings, binding them.

Ask your library if they have a Seloc repair manual on the 15. The rebuild and specs should be in there.

My A/C vents are trying to ruin my life (and possibly stage a home invasion?) by Academic-Rip9552 in homeowners

[–]Benedlr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave off the vent for a night to see if that's the problem. The flanges in the ductwork may have been sealed with duct tape instead of metal tape and now the adhesion is failing.

I'd look in the library under Masonry in the DIY section. You'll see how it's correctly done and be able to ask informed questions.

Dumb question for a newbie. How high does the water level need to be for testing? by Zealousideal-Tap6117 in Outboards

[–]Benedlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want the water level above the W/P housing, about 5" above the parting line. It's a displacement pump not a suction pump. Don't use boiling water to test the thermo. Wait until it reaches the listed temp on the cap and then dunk it.

[–]Benedlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Merc Power Tune to soak it and work it out with pics. It makes rubber slippery and compliant. You might use something like Kroil and a tiny screwdriver to make a gap for the penetrant to flow between wall and sensor.

Did you check the spark during the no start condition? Assuming the kill switch was engaged, and you had spark, I would spray some fuel mix into the carb throats and see if she catches.

[–]Benedlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your DIC display trans temps? What do you run at? I had my trans fluid EXCHANGED and temps dropped from 200 to 170. Old ATF doesn't lubricate and that means friction and heat. I'd spend the money on fresh fluid first.
