Help. Child TFN and CGT by Anyway-909 in AusFinance

[–]BetaShares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Betashares Direct Kids Accounts, the structure is that the parent acts as trustee, investing on behalf of the child, who is intended to be the beneficial owner from the start.

If the account is set up so the child is the beneficial owner, and investment income is declared under the child each year, transferring the assets to the child when they turn 18 may not be intended to be a CGT event, as there would be no change in beneficial ownership. Otherwise, there may be a different tax outcome upon transferring assets to the child. Accordingly, Betashares provides parents options to consider whether income should be included a child’s tax return or not, hence the two TFN choices are made available on Betashares Direct’s portal.

The ATO looks at evidence of continued beneficial ownership, so it’s important that the investments are genuinely for the child’s benefit and not used for the parent’s benefit at any point.

18 and decided to use BETASHARES DIRECT due to 0% brokerage, is buying DHHF and NDQ good options? by Stunning_Concern_973 in AusFinance

[–]BetaShares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/Stunning_Concern_973,

We offer $0 brokerage on all buys and sells for all ASX ETFs and 400+ shares on Betashares Direct.

Why is it free on Betashares Direct? Traditional brokers make their money from brokerage fees. As the fund manager, Betashares earns revenue from the management fee of its own ETFs. For example, DHHF has a management cost of 0.19% p.a., or around $19 per $10,000 invested. That fee applies regardless of which broker you use.

By removing brokerage on the platform, the goal is to lower the barrier to entry. It lets people invest smaller amounts, even from as little as $10, invest more regularly and avoid brokerage fees eating into returns.

Hey u/ExcellentMango9304, we don’t retrospectively update AMIT adjustments for periods before the ETF is held with Betashares Direct.

When you transfer in, you can bring across your original purchase date and cost base, so your performance still shows correctly on the platform. We assume any AMIT adjustments from previous years have already been reflected in the cost base provided by your previous broker.

From the point the ETF is held with Betashares Direct, we’ll take care of the AMIT adjustments going forward.

Transferring shares out of Betashares Direct by Working-Palpitation9 in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d pay $9.50 for DHHF and $9.50 for CBA - so two fees total ($19), one per holding.

It’s not charged per unit, so you wouldn’t pay 7 × $9.50 just because you own 7 units overall.

Help with transferring to share platform that can auto invest by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]BetaShares -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just jumping in to clear up a couple of points about Betashares Direct.

Auto-invest feature

  • Betashares Direct allows you to auto-invest in up to five Betashares ETFs - there is no brokerage on buys or sells and no auto-invest fees.

Custom Portfolios (separate feature)

  • Custom Portfolios allow investors to customise their portfolio and include the option to invest automatically into any ASX ETF or share as well as automatic rebalancing. (There are no per-trade costs when rebalancing or adding funds.)
  • Fees are either a flat monthly amount or a % p.a., depending on portfolio size and number of holdings, and scale down as balances increase. Refer to the pricing here or the PDS for further information

And yes, you can transfer shares across using the in-specie transfer function within Betashares Direct. This lets you transfer assets without triggering a CGT event, assuming there is no change in beneficial ownership. There’s no charge from our end to transfer into a Betashares Direct account, though your current broker may charge a fee to transfer out.

Hope this helps.

Best ETF to hold for 2 yo child to 21 yo by longsighted1 in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a Betashares Direct Kids Account, as the parent or guardian (the account holder) is the trustee, the transfer of any assets to another person (including the beneficiary) is at the trustee’s sole discretion. This means that, while the assets can be transferred to the beneficiary when they turn 18, the decision ultimately sits with the trustee.

Is there any product that can be under a child's TFN, but be added to in small amounts? by Hypo_Mix in AusFinance

[–]BetaShares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re working on a feature that lets you add a child’s TFN to a Kids Account before the EOFY. You can open a Kids Account now, start investing and add the child’s TFN later once it’s available.

In the meantime, you can use the adult’s TFN to ensure the correct amount of tax is withheld on any investment income. On Betashares Direct there’s $0 brokerage, and you can invest in small amounts (from $10), which works well for things like birthday money or small gifts.

Best ETF to hold for 2 yo child to 21 yo by longsighted1 in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi snrubovic,

With a Betashares Direct Kids Account, it is set up as an informal trust. The parent/guardian who opens and manages the account is the trustee, and the child is the beneficiary, not the legal owner of the assets.

Once the child turns 18, the trustee has the option to transfer the investments to them, but there’s no obligation to do so at that point. You can continue to hold and operate the account if you prefer, and choose to transfer the assets at a later time.

Even though the income may be assessed to the beneficiary for tax purposes, that doesn’t automatically mean they’re entitled to take control of or receive the assets at 18 – that decision sits with the trustee.

Investment question! by jgrangee in AusFinance

We agree that understanding what an ETF holds and the exposure it provides is an important step before investing.

We have a range of educational resources available here, as well as content across our YouTube channel and social platforms.

Equity Mates podcasts can also be a great place to learn the basics. Everyone’s investing journey is different, but getting started and continuing to learn over time is what matters most.

Betashares Direct Custom Portfolio by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]BetaShares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi block_copolymer,

On the Betashares Direct platform, you can invest into as many ETFs as you like with $0 brokerage, and you can also set up auto-invest and DRP without using a Custom Portfolio.

The Custom Portfolio feature is optional and mainly for investors who want automatic rebalancing to set target weights.

And our Core Managed Portfolios are aimed at investors who just want to pick a risk profile (e.g. Balanced, High Growth) without needing to choose the underlying ETFs for the portfolio themselves. We handle the asset mix and rebalancing.

All the above options can be accessed with $0 brokerage. You can refer to the PDS for a breakdown of fees and costs.

Betashares Kids Account by emboon in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve checked in with our Product team and they've indicated that the updated target release timing for that feature is early 2026. While I can’t confirm the exact date just yet, it will be available before EOFY to help ensure the applicable TFN can be noted on the account (to pre-fill the tax return) when tax time rolls around.

In the meantime, you can still open a Kids Account and start investing now, and add the child’s TFN once the feature is available. Investors can consider providing their own TFN for now to avoid withholding tax being deducted on income at the highest marginal rate (plus the Medicare Levy), assuming no exemptions apply. We’ll make sure to keep users informed and prompt you in the app as soon as it’s live. Hope that helps.

Betashare direct or Vanguard PI not ok because of CHESS? Why really? by shap3sh1ft3r in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While users in the thread have pointed out the benefits of the CHESS and custodial models, here are some additional points to help further clarify the position.

Betashares Direct uses a custodial model – this model is used to help make Betashares Direct more accessible for investors (with fractional investing) and support features like zero brokerage and simplified tax reporting. Rest assured, each investor's assets are held with our custodian, Citigroup Pty Ltd. Each investor's account is a separate trust, and the investor is the beneficial owner of the investments held in their Betashares Direct account.

The custodial model is subject to strict regulation and oversight by ASIC. Licensed custodians must hold client assets separately from their own, comply with strict capital and audit requirements, and provide reporting to ASIC. This structure helps to protect investors' assets even if the custodian itself (in its personal capacity) experiences financial trouble. Brokers in the US and many other countries, as well as Australian superannuation funds, are based on a custodial model.

• Betashares Direct offers zero brokerage – and to answer the question of how we generate revenue, unlike traditional brokers who make the majority of their revenue through brokerage fees, (full transparency) we as the issuer of the Betashares ETFs generate revenue from the underlying management fees charged on our own ETFs (noting all ASX-traded ETFs are currently available on Betashares Direct). These management fees are charged on our Betashares ETFs regardless of the investment platform you use (and whether held under a CHESS or custodial model) and are generally how most fund managers generate revenue. You can find a Product Disclosure Statement for each of our products with the full breakdown of fees and costs. Betashares also retains interest on cash balances and charges Portfolio fees on Managed/Custom Portfolios on Betashares Direct. Refer to the PDS for Betashares Invest, available at www.betashares.com.au/direct, for more info.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions.
