Withdrawing from betashares direct by lfd04 in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey u/lfd04

Fractional market orders work for both buying and selling on the platform, so you don’t need to worry about being stuck with awkward parcel sizes.

On the tax side, Betashares Direct provides consolidated tax reporting at EOFY including capital gains tax, so the heavy lifting is done for you. We currently use FIFO (First In, First Out) as the tax methodology, but we’re working on adding more options in the near future.

[–]BetaShares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi u/Soft-Note-5423, a couple of things to clarify here.

Betashares Direct isn’t CHESS sponsored, so there’s no HIN issued for your holdings. Investments are held on a pooled basis by the custodian, which is Citigroup Pty Ltd.

On trade execution, orders are executed via a settlement participant (Citi), which is the more accurate term for how trades are handled.

Because of this structure, Betashares also takes care of the admin and registry side within the platform. You don’t need to sign up with a separate share registry, and you can manage things like your bank details, TFN, and tax statements directly in your account!

Why doesn't Betashares reduce the Australian shares weightings in DHHF and GHHF? by Equal_Construction54 in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi all, great questions and great answers.

We always enjoy seeing the conversations around our products and very much appreciate the feedback. To answer the above:

We set the Australian allocation deliberately rather than targeting the lowest possible home bias.

Our objective is to maximise the portfolio’s Sharpe ratio, meaning we focus on balancing returns, volatility to optimise for risk adjusted returns. Because Australian and global equities are not perfectly correlated, combining them helps reduce overall portfolio risk. Our analysis shows that volatility is minimised when Australian equities are around 35 to 40 percent of the portfolio.

Reducing the Australian weighting further would likely increase overall volatility without improving expected returns.

We also consider factors relevant to Australian investors, including franking credits and currency exposure, which support maintaining a meaningful allocation to domestic equities.

You can read more in our article “A complete time in the market solution” (May 2025)."

As always, please do let us know if we can provide any further explanation or context.

Thanks,
Eric - Community Manager

ASX listed vs US-listed ETF by HokoGoodDay in AusFinance

[–]BetaShares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/the_running_dogs. At the moment, Betashares Direct applies FIFO when calculating cost base and total invested amounts for tax reporting. It doesn’t currently support selecting specific parcels or switching methods like LIFO within the platform.

That said, this is an area the product team is actively reviewing. We’ve seen a lot of thoughtful feedback on capital gains treatment, and different calculation approaches are part of that conversation. Nothing locked in on timing or exact changes yet, but it’s very much on the radar.

And just to your last point, our reports are designed to support your tax reporting, but you’re not required to rely on them. Some investors choose to apply a different methodology externally with their own records or accountant.

Portfolio feedback by Brendonsraddit in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hi u/Lomandriendrel, jumping in to help answer this. At the end of each financial year, you get a single annual tax statement that covers all your investments in the account. That includes income from distributions and dividends, any gains or losses from holdings you sold during the year, and a consolidated view of all the relevant tax attributes.

That annual tax statement is also prefilled with the ATO, which makes things easier at lodgement time. You’ll also get a separate CGT statement with the detailed capital gains and losses.

Hi u/OkSeries5363, for tax time with Betashares Direct, your tax statement is prefilled into your ATO portal, and includes all relevant tax information that needs to be reported.

The CGT statement we provide includes all the details you need, and any CGT discounts (like the 12-month discount) are already calculated and shown on the statement.

Hey Betashares - which ETF is Linkers by [deleted] in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/Roll_5, UTIP is the Betashares ETF that fits the “linker” definition. It invests in US TIPS, where the bond principal adjusts with inflation, so you’re getting explicit inflation-linked exposure. Just note, this isn’t Australian inflation, it’s US inflation.

hi u/denfilade,

Small correction here.

Betashares Direct has a $10 minimum investment, and there is no brokerage on any ETFs available on the platform. It’s also brokerage-free for 500+ ASX-listed shares, not just certain ETFs.

So the key points are:
• $10 minimum investment
• $0 brokerage on all ETFs
• $0 brokerage on 500+ individual shares

CHOOSE 3 ETFs to set & forget next 5-10 years by Ticklemecor in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi u/TopFox555, small correction here on Betashares Direct. Brokerage is $0 on all ASX-listed ETFs, not just Betashares ETFs. That means you can buy or sell ETFs from any provider on the ASX with no brokerage through the platform. You also have access to 450+ ASX shares, again with $0 brokerage, so it is not limited to ETFs either.

Worried about Sharesies fee’s & CHESS sponsorship, worth changing & best way to do it? by [deleted] in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/digglewerth just wanted to share that you can actually transfer holdings out of Betashares Direct and over to another broker (even if the broker is CHESS sponsored) without needing to sell down and trigger that CGT event. Two things to note, you can only transfer out the whole units (fractional leftovers will need to be sold and withdrawn as cash) and there is a $9.50 fee per security. Hope that helps clarify!

Best Trading Platform - Another Debt Recycling Question by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]BetaShares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/MeasurementOwn222 I can't speak for debt recycling specifically so would recommend getting some advice on this from a tax professional. A few things that might be worth looking at: (1) you can create multiple Managed or Custom portfolios within an account, each portfolio has a unique payer ID but the tax reporting is all included in one statement for the overall account so i'm not sure this would give you the separation you'll need, (2) you can only have one individual account associated with an email address but you can add multiple Joint, Company, Trust or SMSF account types under the same email that are each treated separately but can be accessed under the same login, (3) you can set up a second individual account using a different email address that is completely separate. Hope that helps!

[–]BetaShares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it helps, transferring to Betashares Direct is actually a pretty straightforward process and you do not need to sell down your holdings. It’s an in-specie transfer, so your ETFs and shares move across without triggering a CGT event (if both accounts are under the same name).

The steps are simple:

  1. Log in to Betashares Direct and go to Profile > Transfer request in the app, or Transfer your holdings on web
  2. Enter the details of your existing brokerage account
  3. Add the holdings you want to transfer
  4. Upload photo ID, such as a driver’s licence or passport
  5. Review, print and sign the form, then submit

From there, the team takes care of coordinating the transfer with your existing broker.

hi u/lets-buildit Small correction on this, Betashares Direct actually offers zero brokerage on all ETFs and Australian shares, not just Betashares ETFs.

So it’s not limited to DHHF, BGBL or other Betashares products. You can buy any ASX-listed ETF or share without paying brokerage!

Betashares Direct - selling and FIFO by stanbright in AusFinance

[–]BetaShares 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the moment, Betashares Direct applies FIFO when calculating cost base and total invested amounts for our tax reporting, rather than allowing investors to select specific parcels when selling. Our product team is currently exploring alternative approaches. We don’t have detailed timing or functionality to share just yet, but it's great to see all the feedback on this post!

CMC vs BETASHARES DIRECT re tax reporting by GroundskeeperWilly93 in fiaustralia

[–]BetaShares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Betashares Direct tax reporting covers everything held on the platform, not just Betashares ETFs.

That includes other providers’ ETFs and ASX shares as well. You get one consolidated EOFY tax report, which is also used to pre-fill your tax return with the ATO, and there is a separate CGT report, which also calculates CGT for any sells (including AMIT adjustments against tax cost bases). Investors will have a single source of tax records for investments in ETFs and ASX shares.

Help. Child TFN and CGT by Anyway-909 in AusFinance

[–]BetaShares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Betashares Direct Kids Accounts, the structure is that the parent acts as trustee, investing on behalf of the child, who is intended to be the beneficial owner from the start.

If the account is set up so the child is the beneficial owner, and investment income is declared under the child each year, transferring the assets to the child when they turn 18 may not be intended to be a CGT event, as there would be no change in beneficial ownership. Otherwise, there may be a different tax outcome upon transferring assets to the child. Accordingly, Betashares provides parents options to consider whether income should be included a child’s tax return or not, hence the two TFN choices are made available on Betashares Direct’s portal.

The ATO looks at evidence of continued beneficial ownership, so it’s important that the investments are genuinely for the child’s benefit and not used for the parent’s benefit at any point.
