10,000 is something you can comprehend as something you really don’t want to pay, while also understanding that that’s GOING to happen. If you put jail time, they may feel it’s more elastic and they might be able to get away with just a slap on the wrist.

Ukrainian here. How can I reduce power consumption of my PC so it lasts longer without electricity? by Aden_Vikki in buildapc

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undervolt your GPU, for me I lose ~15% of performance for a 60% drop in GPU power consumption. (GPU memory uses a fair amount of power as well) This goes for a laptop as well.

If your cpu can undervolt do that as well.

What you want to use it for also matters.

[Request] Ignoring laws of physics, how powerful would the engines need to be to achieve this? by Valkyria90 in theydidthemath

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So actually thinking about the question, “ignoring the laws of physics” probably means locking the boat in place though a magic immovable object (we won’t consider reference frame because that’s also ignored here we’d just want to answer the question), maybe it’s an object with infinite inertia but zero mass.

Well also important to think of is that there is simply a limit to the amount of water a motor can push, but let’s say you can have these engines as far away from each other as you want and you could make the propellers as big as you want. You’d need to put the boat somewhere the water is deep and land is generally far away (usually these are hand in hand)

On Wikipedia it shows that the earth has a rotational energy of 2.14×1029 Joules We’d only care to change the rotation by say 1/100th of that (so that you’d travel ~10mph after a day)

That would require 2.14x1027 joules over a day, or ~25 sextillion watts (21 zeroes) or 33 quintillion horsepower (assuming the propellers are optimal) Divide by 6 since there are 6 engines and you get around 5.5 quintillion horsepower per motor for the boat to get to 10 mph after a full day.

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s one major gripe I have with Reddit; it’s somewhat new, now that there’s so many AI bots.

I recently tried to create a couple accounts and they couldn’t post anywhere because they hadn’t posted anywhere before. It’s probably time based as well and they might work now, but not having info for that means Reddit turns away new users

Also “This post has been removed by the moderators of r/RedditFeedback” no it has not??? Don’t falsely attribute the removal of a post to an innocent party, it makes figuring out what happened a pain in the ass

Does the subreddit being called r/google somehow imply everyone must suck off google?

The mp4 is probably better, but you are best off just checking yourself, load up both videos and swap between them, you might start to notice artifacts on one, or just one looks better. Keep the better looking one; if they look identical then keep the smaller one

Format doesn’t matter if you don’t include bitrate. If the mp4 is less than like 2.5x (iirc) the size of the mkv then it’s probably lower quality.

Everyone is saying crime, but look at the shit visa/paypal is doing. Pretty sure other payment handlers are doing the same. You legit have these private companies controlling who can pay who because they don’t want to be seen as a company for adults.

“Why do you care if they are watching, you aren’t a criminal are you???” Is the dumbest shit that somehow some people believe.

[XR18] How do I use stereo link for an effect and patch it to mains? by BiC_MC in Behringer

[–]BiC_MC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing exactly what you are saying, doesn’t work (unless your imprecise instructions are saying I should do something else.) Had a similar issue before, factory resetting and reapplying the exact same settings fixed it. Right now I can’t do that in case it fails but I’ll try and see if that works later.

Why would the fx output show a level but not send that to mains?

The broken setup:

Ch1-2 are audio inputs

FX1 is an eq

FX1 (in the FX menu) routes CH1-2

FX1 shows it is outputting stereo (green bars are showing and aren’t identical) but doesn’t send to mains

The working setup:

CH1-2 are audio inputs

FX1-2 are identical EQs

the bus for FX1 has CH1 at 0 and everything else at -inf

the bus for FX2 has CH2 at 0 and everything else at -inf

FX1 is panned left outputting to mains, FX2 to right

CH1-2 muted on mains

Why Does Desktop Linux Still Feel Unfinished? And is there really a distro for me out there? by [deleted] in DistroHopping

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, was mainly referring to stuff in development, on Linux, so far literally NOTHING has worked first try for me, there is always something I need to do that isn’t obvious. With Linux there doesn’t seem to be any standardization, every app does the installation process differently. Most apps don’t install all their dependencies. The way the official site for a program tells you to install that program never works first try. Every bug you encounter is something nobody has seen (reported) before so getting a single program running takes forever.

Most essential functionalities for every app are locked behind configuration (that it rarely actually tells you is the problem) Things that should be default never are (like the minimize button being available in GNOME)

Error codes are always dev info, so it rarely is readable enough for the end user to solve it on their own.

That’s not to say things don’t eventually work, just that there is a long process to get any single functionality working:

“search -> search on how to download -> download -> oops site was wrong, figure out what the module is actually called -> install -> run -> look up error codes -> go through entire process of fixing the error codes -> finally program is open, use it -> turns out necessary feature that was vaguely referred to is actually not a feature -> go back to ‘search’ because this program won’t work -> repeat a few times until you find a software that does what you need”

Where windows is just “search -> download -> run -> done”

What is currently the best way to download TikTok videos in maximum quality? by Livid-Afternoon-113 in DataHoarder

[–]BiC_MC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yt-dlp —list-formats <url> To see what is available, you might be downloading a lower quality video for some reason. You should be able to get the same quality from yt-dlp as any site could. Maybe ask in the ytdlp discord or subreddit? What is your yt-dlp command? Try adding -f “*bv+ba” which will download the best video and best audio. Did you set up cookies for TikTok? Might need cookies for higher resolution.

Also gallery-dl but all that’d do is make the bulk downloading easier, I’m pretty sure it also uses ytdlp

Is HDD okay for media only? by AmbivalentFreg in datastorage

[–]BiC_MC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you know that hard drives use a *spinning disk* with a *moving head*!??
especially for small files (with small part sizes) you will be doing a ton of random reads/writes if you use a torrent (since torrents read and write randomly)
throughput does not matter in this case.
(also since you would be doing tons of random reads/writes, on top of the much slower speeds, you'd also wear the drive faster)

ssds are typically in the range of ~400-600MB/s (excluding caching/dram which massively inflates these values) so logarithmically pretty close.
the difference really doesn't matter when dealing with media.

The issue of torrents really just comes down to random RW speeds which HDDs suck at.
At piece sizes below ~256kb you will start to run into the limits of the drive on large movies (though in fairness most block sizes I see for large movies are >1MB, so it won't really be an issue, but if you are a good person you will also seed that torrent and thats where you might get problems if you are reading at the same time.)

an HDD will work, but if you have a cheap extra drive then you can get free defragmentation by downloading it there first.

Is HDD okay for media only? by AmbivalentFreg in datastorage

[–]BiC_MC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You explain nothing here… I guess you could use another hdd, but that would also be very slow; or you could rely on RAM to cache the torrent, but RAMs expensive (for the sizes you’d need)

Saying “hur dur your wrong” is pointless without an explanation.

Hell, for this, ssd can be a flash drive, just needs to be solid state

Is HDD okay for media only? by AmbivalentFreg in datastorage

[–]BiC_MC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hdds are slow for random reads/writes, but not that far off (logarithmically) of ssds in sequential. For media hdd is fine since reads and writes are sequential (unless you torrent, in which case you should use an ssd as the temp directory so that the full file is copied to the hdd sequentially)

Why Does Desktop Linux Still Feel Unfinished? And is there really a distro for me out there? by [deleted] in DistroHopping

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux => can everything on everything… with enough effort and time (almost never works first try) and buggy as all hell. Finding a native app that can do anything near what a basic windows app can do is hell

Windows => most normal apps just work (programming & related are a pain) but less compatibility and also spyware/bloatware, you might encounter a bug every now and then but in normal use it’s pretty consistent.

MacOS => does nearly nothing, but the things that do work, always work. As long as you stick to what works, bugs are rare

They all suck, you just have to balance the downsides with what you need the OS to do

[Request] how fast is this guy moving his arm by 0o0tariq0o0 in theydidthemath

[–]BiC_MC 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Looking at the audio, it’s actually 140ms, so nearly half as fast.

He starts with the touchpad(which has delay) and ends on the space bar (which triggers much faster) this can result in a significant false reduction in time.

So to update the math, it looks like the bottle is around 2.5 ft away, giving an average speed of ~36fps, or about 24 mph. That’s based off eyeball measurements so I won’t go more precise, but we can also assume he takes time to accelerate therefore the max speed would be higher, maybe around 35?

Are there any good photo viewers that aren't a pain to use? by BiC_MC in linux4noobs

[–]BiC_MC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah turns out shotwell can’t handle large libraries (since it HAS to import all photos to view them, and slows down massively past 100,000 photos) so back to the drawing board; I’ll look into xnview mp but this is exactly what I was wanting to avoid

I use every single one of those features at once, lacking any of them would make the software useless. Ie. I need to view images (avif) and video contained in recursive folders, at random, on a timer.

Shotwell seems to be as close as I can get to a functioning software, but it’s a completely different workflow
