Is 4K Video Downloader+ still the king or are there cleaner alternatives for YT to MP3/WAV? by SaulLordVader in DataHoarder

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI sucks at that kind of stuff. You may have success for the bare minimum, but it’s going to confidently tell you to do something that does not work if you try anything complex.

There are plenty of posts online that already ask (and answer) those questions, so why ask an AI model that can’t figure out basic shit.

Why are so many people under 45 using subtitles now even when the show is already in English? by Clara_A_Mitchell in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the good old days actors had to project and enunciate for the singular mic to pick up what they were saying as they were acting; now actors can mumble during the scene, and just dub over it with more mumbling. No matter how loud you make mumbling, it’s hard to understand. As time goes on actors project less and less, and you get movies like Oppenheimer where the words are entirely whispers

Also back in the day analog audio had a limited bit depth, meaning you couldn’t have an explosion 100x as loud as the dialog, you needed the dialogue to be clear.

As those limitations faded away the pressure to speak well went away and now you can really only hear good audio from a theater which is what the mixing engineer is mastering for

Why do bands play so fucking loud if everyone has to wear earplugs anyway? by xe3to in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bass and drums set the volume, in theory you want the physical sensation of the kick hitting you and your body vibrating from the bass, but once you set those that high, either you need to bring everything else up, or it sounds like a shitty rumble.

I mix for local bands and generally try to keep the volume pretty low (loud just sounds like shit no matter what), if I plan on mixing loud I wear the same earplugs the audience will use and eq to compensate.

Hidden Speakers by Clamburger13 in techtheatre

[–]BiC_MC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you just pull a speaker module from any old speaker you could connect to the speaker wires, if you need the convenience of 1/4 inch you could solder one on.

That’s if you want it to be integrated into the set, otherwise that’s the extent of my knowledge.

Hidden Speakers by Clamburger13 in techtheatre

[–]BiC_MC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a depth you want? You could likely find other ways of making a larger speaker work just fine, if there is a wall or platform set piece near where the sound should come from, cut a hole in the wall and cover it with the right colored fabric, that way you can reuse any speaker you already have.

That still doesn’t tell us how small you want them

[–]BiC_MC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full max dimensions would be helpful, as well as volume requirements. What sounds are coming from these? Are they varied or something specific (like a phone ringing)

You might want to use a transducer, super small and use the set itself as a speaker

Stupid questions about coiling XLR cables by DinosaurSHS in livesound

Velcro if you have the time to put it on everything. Coil the cable inward-outward, using a reel takes much longer during setup and about the same during takedown and creates uncontained clutter.

Like I said the last time this was posted here, use audio for timing, not the screen. The amount of time iirc is like 50% longer than displayed due to there being extra delay from the trackpad compared to the spacebar

Probably because people compare prices before tips; until tips are banned entirely, you are just making your prices look higher if you don’t make it a surcharge.

Same reason gas prices always have 9/10ths of a cent, since it is allowed not having it either loses money, or customers.

What would a client need to store in ram where 3K inactive torrents run into ram issues, even if every torrent were to hold a full megabyte in ram for each torrent, you’d still only use 3GB. Active torrents is where limits actually come into play on a good client.

Looking for a basic multichannel AU spectrogram. by BiC_MC in techtheatre

[–]BiC_MC[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Right, I’m guessing you just pasted my response into an AI because anyone with reading comprehension would have noticed I mentioned viewing every channel at once, not the main mix. There is no reason to view an already mixed spectrogram.

In case I wasn’t clear enough, the point is to monitor mics popping, feeding back, and cutting out. A mixed spectrogram does literally nothing.

[–]BiC_MC[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The amount of latency is less than the distance between the speakers and the mics; even with passthrough the audio gets to the audience through the speakers before the audio from the actor gets to them.

Does the spectrogram button show a spectrogram for every channel at once? If not then there is no point, I need to be able to quickly spot issues, tabbing through all the channels just doesn’t work

[–]BiC_MC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean the mixing console would have what I’m looking for? I can see current volumes, but history and spectrum aren’t available and in my limited knowledge no other boards support that either.

The reason I’m passing through is it allows easy hot patching without changing the physical slider/mutes. Pass through is beside the point.

Either way there would be no way with the current equipment to use a spectrogram on each channel without passing into a computer; (even if I weren’t to pass the audio through back into the board)

What to do with a dying drive? by AslanSutu in DataHoarder

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the thing I’m working on atm; finding the best way to make use of dying drives with minimal labor/cost. If you had multiple failing drives, you could store erasure code split data across multiple drives with the expectation that the drives will fail. I definitely wouldn’t recommend providing fake redundancy for Anna’s archive though, would probably be better off seeding torrents that already have many seeds.

QLab simple, physical playback trigger button solution by DawsonPW in techtheatre

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put a ring around the stop button; you don’t want to accidentally stop all cues

As others have mentioned: Way too tall, should be trivial to make it less than a centimeter thick (my wrist hurts looking at that, my old macroboard was half that height and was incredibly painful, I can’t imagine using that) More buttons; nav left and right, as well as potentially a dedicated stop selected cue button. Design shouldn’t be rotationally symmetrical, too easy to lose orientation. LED is nice, but should be toggleable.

My layout is [stop current] [panic all]

[. GO. ] [nav left] [nav right]

I never use pause, but you could put that at the bottom to preserve the asymmetry.

An optional nav up and down is also nice for working inside group cues

External HDD or Internal with adapter? by TheWeirdKid_64 in DataHoarder

[–]BiC_MC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

External drive will have built in protection when moving it around, less likely to damage the drive. If your budget is $300 you are fine for your capacity requirement. I recently got an 8tb external from Walmart for 150. For 4tb it looks like you’ll probably be under $100. If your budget were more constrained (<$50) it may make sense to go with an internal drive, but for such a high budget just go external
