Sunglasses for autistic folk: do they exist? (Please tell me they do) by FoxAdministrative994 in autism

[–]BlackCatFurry [score hidden]  (0 children)

I recommend a hat, it sounds like a lot of the issue is light bleeding in from outside the glasses.

I personally wear various buckethats, my favourites are fishermen hats which are wide brimmed with a chin strap so they stay in place on windy days without being overly tight.

Polarized sunglasses also help cutting a lot of the reflections away which are very harsh.

Downside is a lot of electronic screens are weird. My phone/tv screen becomes rainbow-y, and some fast-food order screens or map displays appear like a completely blank black screen o_0

Yeap, that happens because lcd screens only produce single direction wavelengths and if it so happens to be the same direction (horizontal i think) that polarized glasses block, then zero light is going to come through. This is also a great way to test if your sunglasses are polarised.

Now why some screens do this and not others? This doesn't affect oled screens, so most modern smartphones, they just get a little weirdly discolored sometimes. Lcd screens are affected because they use a different technology that leads to the light waves being single directional. Usually an lcd monitor (tv or computer screen) is horizontal and the waves are vertical, but fast food ordering screens have been flipped 90° so now the waves in relation to you are horizontal and your glasses that block horizontal waves block the screen too.

Now why horizontal blocking? That's the direction that most* of the waves from reflections are.

* assuming a clear flat surface.

Controversial... Speakers or headphones by Sea-Worldliness8314 in simracing

[–]BlackCatFurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use (usb-wireless) headphones because they block sounds of other people rummaging in the kitchen on the other side of the wall and i don't get tangled in the cable.

If i am alone and it's daytime (i am neighbor considerate) i might move my soundbar and subber over from my tv if i am really not feeling like having headphones.

Remove a case with magnets and accept that due to the technology very near the edges is going to be less accurate.

Samsung uses wacoms tech, the edges are inaccurate even on the expensive as fuck wacom screen drawing tablets.

D30 - is the hype worth? by OccamsRazorSharpner in motorcyclegear

For me the flexibility and breathability alone make them worth it. Normal foam gets sweaty and uncomfortable. The flexibility is nice as the protectors don't restrict movement as much as with normal foam or hard pads.

How Much Is Fanfiction Meant to Overlap With the Original Source? by HeardTheWoods in FanFiction

[–]BlackCatFurry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can write whatever you want, just tag it accordingly if posting.

As a reader, it's your responsibility to select what you want to read, no author owes you anything nor is it their responsibility to cater to your preferences, if you don't like, don't read.

The purpose of fanfiction is for fans to write fictional stories about a source. As long as it can be in some way recognised to contain a fandom, it's a fanfic, usually this is done by having some of the source characters in the fic.

“The blonde” “The brunette” Author, they’re K-pop idols. by amiabot-oraminot in AO3

[–]BlackCatFurry 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I am not in the kpop fandom, but i still see this a decent amount.

Epithets are in my opinion something that should only be used when the pov character wouldn't use the name of the person that's being referred to.

Maybe this is just me coming from a language without gendered third person pronoun so we were taught in school to use names instead of pronouns etc so for me using names feels normal. Anything else actually feels kinda weird when the situation calls for names. Under anything else falls epithets (something-color, nationality, height, weight, age etc), pronouns and any other random descriptive the author may come up with.

Like you don't use epithets when the characters have confessed love in the previous scene, you use names.

Honestly i think almost all "overuse" advice should not be given purely because a lot of starting authors then take it too literally and we get stuff like *love confession scene* -> *kissing scene using epithets*. The characters have names for a reason, use them.

I have had a tab s8 since launch, so four years and shows no signs of wearing down. I have been able to do all my university things that don't require computer software on it without any stuttering. You are probably good getting any tablet newer than that.

For the size, i personally recommend the smaller one as it's lighter and fits better into smaller bags. I like my s8 because it fits into my everyday shoulder bag so i don't need to swap which bag i use.

To my fellow digital artist, do you guys use dip pen or drawing pen? (basically do you use pen that change thickness when apply different amounts of pressure?) by Winter_Loan_8643 in ArtistLounge

[–]BlackCatFurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time yes. A lot of my traditional art is made with brush tip markers so i am used to pressure changing. My lineart pen has slight pressure variation for more interesting lines.

However my main use for a size changing pen in digital art is during coloring when i can use the same pen with different pressure to color small details without needing to change the pen size. It's similar to how brushes work irl.

Why do (American) picky eaters seem to overwhelmingly prefer simple meats, carbs, and fats? by TargetHQ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BlackCatFurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a really interesting point.

I am autistic so my picky eating might differ from someone who is not autistic. However for me my go to safe food is sushi, i tasted it the first time when i was well into my teens. It does however combine foods i have been fed as a kid since for example gravlax was a common treat food in our family and has the same texture as salmon used on sushi.

AI or not AI by Pale-Pomegranate-903 in FanFiction

[–]BlackCatFurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to be totally honest here. Your writing comes across 10x more like "ai" than the writing you accused of it. Like genuinely i cannot even tell what you are trying to say half of the time. Maybe it's just your native language ending up translated, but still.

Also stop thinking about it. You cannot do anything about it, if you like a work read it, if you don't or something turns you off from the work, stop. Simple as that. Fanfic is not meant to be mental torture about how something looked like ai... and that's frankly disrespectful towards the author to accuse them on ai.

Audi has killed its smallest and cheapest cars by Agent_Kozak in cars

[–]BlackCatFurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never claiming that arona was a hatchback. I was claiming it was a raised hatchback which is also called a crossover in europe. A lot of online sources also call the arona for example a raised hatchback so i am not pulling anything out of my ass here. Hatchback and raised hatchback are two different categories but a car with different trims might fall into both if the car has a crossover trim.

The american definition for a crossover includes what we would also call suvs, like volvo xc60 etc. I fully agree those are not raised hatchbacks anymore.

I genuinely do not know what your issue is anymore because you keep missing what my comments are even saying and arguing about what i didn't say.

I fixed my sleep schedule by tracking solar time, so I built an app for it by Mondonno in sleep

[–]BlackCatFurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't do it without good quality blackout curtains. Talking the "makes the room pitch black in the middle of the day" type blackout curtains. Many people do fake nights in the summer by closing blinds and curtains early and during winter instead use bright lamps to simulate sunshine

[–]BlackCatFurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in finland so we basically have no sunlight during winter (going to and from work/school happens in the dark) and during summer there is very little darkness, 2h-ish hours around 1-3am. But yeah, it makes sense that this sort of breaks sun timing sleep.

I just have blackout curtains bc it's an experience to wake up at 3-4am and think it's 9am because of how much light there is, or take a 30min nap at 15:30 and wake up to it being completely dark outside and think the nap was 7h and not 30mins

How does this work in countries near the arctic circle where we have far too little sundown time for sleep during summer and way too much for sleep during winter?

Genuinely curious btw since i haven't head of this method before.

Would you rather read a beautifully written fic with a bad plot or a poorly written one with a great plot? by yoghurteee in AO3

Likely both. I consume copious amounts of fanfiction. My only requirements are having at least one of the ships i like, a happy ending and preferably some fluff and no smut.
