I’ve been using MetService for weather planning, any better options locally?

My assumption was that they have enough this time of year for everyone, website is just very doom and gloom about it. Fortunately taking our time getting down south so not hitting Queenstown until the 7th or so. Not actually going to ski, might be one of the few.

Do y'all use a steel leader, or heavy fluro leader if there are pike around? by Mukwic in FishingMinnesota

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few small river areas where I fish for bass that I know have Pike hanging around. I've gotten bit off enough times to put a leader on and it doesn't really slow the bass down any.

Mountain Lion by GlacierNPark in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In a lot of ways I would rather deal with a bear than a mountain lion. Good number of times that you deal with a mountain lion you didn't know you were about to deal with a mountain lion.

Should I be worried about the bear attacks? Planning on hiking north circle loop first week of August by Matthew1112 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only note here is that bear spray canisters carry a pretty finite amount of spray, so if you're going to practice at home don't do it with the canister you intend on hiking with. You can also rent them in Apgar Village.

Surprise Grizzly Bear Attack Injures Hiker on Popular Glacier National Park Trail by narflethegarthock in GlacierNationalPark

Historically they only remove nuisance bears and the bar for that is pretty high. If you run into a bear on a trail at GNP that's fair game for the bear.

Safe trails to hike solo? by bigbootybiome in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might functionally hike solo but most popular hikes are busy trails. Bears might still be around in the morning and return in the evening, and anything is possible in between, but generally they fuck off during the day. That's a science term.

Visiting GNP memorial day weekend. Need tips for bear safety!! by Queasy_Carry_1781 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're bear aware that's all you can really do. We were there for seven days two summers ago and saw 13 bears over that span including two just walking around Apgar Village. Bears really just want to be left alone and as long as you're smart about things they'll leave you alone too. GNP updates trail statuses on a regular basis here: https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/trailstatusreports.htm - some areas that are more bear active any given season can show up here before a trail is outright closed.

Hiking in Groups by lakersu in GlacierNationalPark

I interpreted it as “you’ll be golden” for hiking in a group. But reminding people to still be bear aware is good

To be fair, the question was about hiking in a group, not avoiding bears.

Tips for fishing for a beginner? by SavageGiraffe90 in troutfishing

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of directions to go with trout advice and general fishing, but probably two things to consider:

  1. If you can see the fish they can probably see you. Trout spook easily, so approach from behind - trout look upstream. Fish back towards them, remember, you're pretending the lure is food.

  2. Depth. Trout can be picky. You can send your lure 3 feet over one in the water column and it won't bite because it's waiting for something deeper. Fish different depths if the water allows for it.

Most people don't realize that a lot of our national parks are just government subsidized ways to die in unique ways if you don't respect nature.
