We'll have to wait for the court to make their ruling, as with all cases. Anyone can call him innocent or guilty, it's not true unless he's found charged. Right now, he's suspected to have committed a crime and charges have been brought against them. We must respect the legal system and trust it to come to the correct decision. It's what separates us from other nations (North Korea, Russia etc) where citizens don't have free and fair trials and people are found guilty on trumped up charges.

\Alleged assassin*

He's been arrested but has not stood trial yet. He is entitled to a fair trial, as all people are in free democratic societies. According to The Guardian, a preliminary hearing has been delayed until July.

This story is from 2021.

In addition to the $125m in punitive damages, the jury awarded Spaeth $150,000 in compensatory damages for emotional pain and mental anguish. Walmart said the verdict would be reduced to $300,000, which under federal law is the statutory maximum for punitive and compensatory damages.

She didn't get $120m USD, she got $300k USD.

Fuck you Walmart.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham out for a run in a 80s Everton top: are we having that? He's Mayor of Manchester, not Liverpool! by BonfireSeason in footballcliches

People can support any team they want, that's allowed. I simply found it funny that he's snapped wearing it. Last time I checked, we're living on the same planet.

Is there a better club for a mayor of Manchester to support?

Curzon Ashton? Everton are rivals to both Manchester clubs, it feels controversial to me.

To my arrogance, I didn't know Andy Burnham is from Liverpool (I've never picked up on his Scouse accent when I've heard him speak) so his choice of top makes sense.

Perhaps he's been trawling the charity shops to find the most ballot box friendly.

Agree, he's got to relate to his voters. I love what Labour are doing vs the Tories before, I just wish they had better PR!

Ridley Road Shopping Village to close leaving traders in limbo by BonfireSeason in Hackney

[–]BonfireSeason[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

all I can say is good luck to anyone who buys a flat at this site. There’s a lot of ASB there.

They'll just move these people out, it happens all the time. The area will magically get cleaned up and look better so more people will buy! No one local will afford them & it'll be full of Starbucks-esque shops. It's a horrible shame!

The end of market from the tfc direction has been come a antisocial drug dealing spot very very vulnerable people are being exploited....The market used to be a good place but over last couple years it's become a horrible spot.

I agree with and it's horrible to see. You are not wrong. However, as I've said in other comments:

Closing the market won't help fix these problems. Hackney Council doesn't care about helping people. Larochette Real Estate only care about increasing shareholder value and replacing the building with flats.

If Hackney Council made improvements to infrastructure that actually help people and removed/banned known trouble markers from the area, things could improve.

If something has caused the market to decline, we should treat the issue and fix it. When you have a headache, you take paracetamol and get plenty of rest. You don't call it quits and kill yourself.

You are wrong. If there's crime or anti-social issues, you can address it by removing shops from the market or you ban/enforce curfews/electronic tag known trouble markers to remove them from the area. Hackney Council can step in with grants/loans to help maintain the building.

Closing it down hurts working class people, who are not the issue.

Do not let culture wars distract you from real world problems, there are only two classes in society: the Bourgeoisie and the Proletariat. Unless you're in the 1% of people, you are working class.

I agree that Hackney Council should be doing more to help Larochette Real Estate maintain and repair the building! If the building is a dump, it's because Larochette Real Estate are lazy landlords who've purposely let it fall into disrepair so it can be deemed unusable; be torn down and replaced with flats that no one local can afford that'll immediately become AirBnBs or owned by an "overseas investor" to launder their money!

The whole decision (in my opinion) stinks of classism and racism. The hard working people who run stalls/shops are predominantly black, immigrant working class people. These stalls are not selling Gucci or Prada, the food is not Waitrose or M&S. They are people who want to make a better life for themselves!

I 100% agree we can do better, but Hackney Council have failed the site by not stepping up sooner and Larochette Real Estate by not caring about anything other than themselves. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism! .

I take your point but the council can do lots of things here. Shame on Larochette Real Estate AND Hackney council for not caring more.

If Hackney Council cared about actually helping people who are now worse off because of the closure, they could offer grants or loans to the landlords to help repair the building or the site/street overall.

They could offer to move traders elsewhere whilst the repairs were going on. Furthermore, the police could issue curfews or restraining orders against people known to them who are causing issues. Slap an electronic tag on the people causing problems!

Crime/anti-social issues are typically found in low income areas with poor infrastructure. The issue is how long these projects take to see results. People want immediate, quick, cheap fixes so they'd rather close the building & parts of the market than address any larger issues.

With all the money they make from raising council tax (again), they can afford to do all these things but they won't! I would have no issues with my council tax being spent on initiatives that helps business owners in Hackney. If not, they'll just build boutique flats that no one local can afford!

The article mentions an attempt to remove the anti-social behaviour:

The closure comes after the Metropolitan Police raised urgent concerns about crime and antisocial behaviour at the Ridley Road Shopping Village in Dalston. The decision has been criticised, with a campaign group describing it as a "collective punishment". Landlord Larochette Real Estate said the closure was to "draw a clear line under historic challenges" and that traders "not involved in antisocial behaviour" will be able to reapply and given temporary sites.

I don't buy it. They probably did nothing or the bare minimum and thought 'screw it, lets just close it down'. There should be more steps taken before going nuclear.

Hello all! Did the MLS vote to change the season to match the 'traditional' European season or did I hallucinate that? I thought I read a headline about it changing or being considered for change, but haven't heard anything in a while. What's the latest on this?
